What kind of society consciously and purposely sacrifices its own youth for political gain and tactical advantage?

Today the overwhelming majority of Palestinian Arabs nurture a blind hatred of Israel. They have created a cultural milieu of vengeance and violence – preparing their children to be sacrifices in a death cult.

Palestinian Arabs are killing their youth because they make effective delivery systems for killing Israelis. This tactic encourages Palestinians to enlarge the role of their children by using them as human shields, direct combatants and suicide bombers – glorifying, rather than mourning their deaths.

The death of Arab children on the front lines – extolled as shahids or martyrs – has become a cynical weapon in the arsenal of Arab leaders. They have learned that when their children are killed, they gain world sympathy, as the death of any child is considered a tragedy and consequently portrayed as such in the media, regardless of circumstance.

Palestinians are again celebrating the murder of a Jew – this time 18-year-old Dvir Sorek, an unarmed off-duty soldier who was fatally stabbed and whose body was discovered August 8 on rocky ground in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc near Bethlehem.

Not even a single Palestinian has condemned the ruthless killing of the teenager. The Palestinian Authority (PA), whose leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has previously said that he is opposed to terrorism, apparently does not see a need to denounce the killing of Sorek.

Instead, the Palestinian Authority continued to issue multiple statements condemning Israel for "violating international law" for building new housing units for Jewish families in the West Bank. The statements, issued hours after the terrorist attack in Gush Etzion, made no reference to the murder of the Jewish teen.

In the eyes of the Palestinian Authority leadership, the inauguration of a new neighborhood in a settlement is a "major crime" that needs to be brought before the International Criminal Court.

“The attacks on civilians, breaking their arms, and beating them, constitute humiliation, disgrace, and injustice,” Nasser Al-Laham, the editor-in-chief of the Palestinian Authority’s Maan News Agency, said about Palestinian rule in the territories.

“Prison cells? Torture? Burn marks?” he asked. “What have we adopted from the Arab countries apart from their garbage?... Is this the kind of homeland we want — a homeland in which I can no longer trust my neighbor? A homeland in which my fellow citizen comes and, in front of my wife, drags me by my feet or by my hair and tramples me underfoot?... You’re doing this under the pretext of fighting Israel? You’re lying!”

Al-Laham’s outrage, which he voiced in a recent TV interview, puts the lie to the well-entrenched narrative that borders, settlements, and Jerusalem explain the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Peek below the surface and you will find the cultural obstacles, and the distrust they engender, that really drive the conflict — and that will require nothing short of a Palestinian cultural revolution to erase.

Palestinians are not born hating Jews. That hatred is learned, and for the Palestinians, it is vital.

This is how for generations they have been churning out terrorists who shoot, stab and run over pregnant women, children asleep in their beds, and soldiers and police officers on guard duty. Along with the aspiration to martyrdom and the willingness to die, hatred is apparently the basis for the Palestinian loss of fear and Israel's loss of deterrence, two issues that are often discussed together.

The Palestinians feed their children hatred with their mothers' milk. Where else in the world will you find a society that gives babies names like "Knife of Jerusalem" and posts pictures of them on Facebook holding weapons in their tiny hands? Where else on Earth are sports teams, streets and schools named after the murderers of children and the elderly?

While in Israeli society we fight the agents of hatred and try to cast them out from among us, religious figures in the Palestinian Authority explain that the conflict with Israel is an eternal war commanded by God and that hating and killing Jews is the will of Allah. The hadith of the tree and the rock, which explicitly calls on Muslims to kill Jews, has never been more popular in sermons in the PA. Every Jew killed sends Palestinians onto the rooftops to fire celebratory rounds of shots. They hand out sweets to children and ululate at the funerals of their murderous "martyrs."

A few days ago, we learned that PA President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement was "holding prayers for the souls" of the killers of newborn infant Amiad Yisrael and civilians Ziv Hajbi and Kim Levengrond-Yehezkel. Fatah says the killers "are drawing the borders of the homeland with their pure blood."

Sports is considered a place where politics and conflict are put aside - but not in the Palestinian Authority. A football tournament for high school boys in Hebron, arranged by the local Fatah branch, named all 11 teams after terrorists - including terror leaders responsible for most of the deaths from terror Israel has suffered since its founding. Six were top Palestinian terror leaders and founders of terror organizations, while the other five were terrorists or members of terror organizations. The PA Ministry of Education endorsed the event's role modeling of terrorists with a representative who "honored the winning players and teams."

Ireland, Colombia, and Israel: Clearly Not Birds of a Feather - by Stephen M. Flatow

Two former Irish government officials who visited Israel recently declared that they know the way to resolve the Israeli-Arab conflict: Both sides just need “leaders who genuinely want to resolve the issues,” they announced. Gee, why have the rest of us never thought of that before?

Sometimes, I marvel at the number of foreigners who believe that they have come up with the magical solution for peace in the Middle East. You hear such drivel from journalists like Thomas Friedman, who seems to believe that he was born with the unique wisdom to solve every international problem, and from Jewish left-wing “peace” groups that genuinely believe they are the only ones in the Jewish community who want peace. Believe me, they are not.

Most of all, you hear it from ex-diplomats. Those who have been involved in negotiating in one part of the world seem to assume that they are therefore uniquely equipped to negotiate any situation or conflict.

The worst, of course, are the former US diplomats who spent more than 20 years trying to shove a Palestinian state down Israel’s throat in the name of “peace.” These days, practically every major newspaper article about some aspect of Arab-Israeli diplomacy includes some obnoxious comment from one or more of these “experts.”

For friends of Israel, the scenes from Pittsburgh were all too familiar. Terrorist attacks on Israeli synagogues, yeshivahs, Passover seders and other religious sites and events have been a tragically frequent feature of the Arab war against the Jewish state.

This month marks the fourth anniversary of one of the most notorious attacks in Israel in the past few years. On Nov. 18, 2014, Palestinian terrorists burst into the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood, and shot or axed to death five rabbis (four of them American citizens) at prayer, in addition to an Israeli Druze policeman.

One cannot help but note the striking difference between how American society and its leaders responded to the Pittsburgh massacre, and how Palestinian Arab society and its leaders responded to the Har Nof massacre.

Introducing Palestinians' Latest "Apartheid Fatwa" - by Bassam Tawil

But in the instance of the Palestinian mufti and his superiors in Ramallah, everything seems to be fine -- once again, the international community turns a blind eye to the Palestinian leaders' apartheid and their terrorizing of their own people.

If anyone wanted further proof that no Palestinian leader would ever be able to recognize Israel's right to exist, it was provided recently in the form of yet another religious decree, or fatwa, issued by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein. It is a fatwa that basically tells Muslims: "We will kill you, punish you in many ways, if we catch you selling land or homes to Jews."

The fatwa makes it clear that no Muslim is entitled to sell his or her land -- or transfer ownership over it -- to "enemies," a reference to Jews. The implications are extremely serious. Anyone who violates this religious opinion or decree will face various forms of punishment, ranging from being boycotted to the death sentence.

The fatwa, which was published by the mufti on July 10, has attracted no attention from the international media or those parties that keep telling us how keen they are about achieving peace between Palestinians and Israel. Human rights organizations around the world do not seem to be bothered at all by such threats against Muslims.

According to the fatwa, it is considered a "betrayal of Allah, His Messenger and Islam" to sell land to the "enemies" or accept compensation for it. The Muslims, it states, are obligated to boycott anyone who violates the ruling, refrain from marrying the "sinners" or doing any business with them. Taking matters to their most extreme, Muslims are prohibited from attending the funeral of -- or even burying in a Muslim cemetery -- anyone who dares to sell land or a house to a Jew.

In his statement, the mufti reminded all Palestinians that the Supreme Fatwa Council in east Jerusalem had already issued a similar decree back in 1996.

The media war on Palestinian free will, agency, and the natural capacity to reason like any other people - Sohrab Ahmari

...It does the Palestinians no good to treat them as children entitled to tantrums, as permanent wards of the international community or, worst, as wild men bereft of reason. Palestinian Arabs are human beings, which means they are possessed of free will, agency, and the natural capacity to reason like any other people. This basic, incontestable anthropological reality needs to be frequently restated today since our media and foreign-policy establishment has apparently concluded the opposite.

The latest media assault on Palestinian agency came Monday, as Israelis celebrated the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, while Palestinians attempted to infiltrate en masse the barrier fence that separates the Jewish state from the terrorist-run Gaza Strip to the south.

By the Western media’s dim lights, the blame for Hamas’s criminal stunt and the casualties it caused lay with . . . anybody and everybody but Hamas and the Palestinians.

The narrative emerged early on Twitter, and the social-media platform’s deplorable tendency to flatten reality into cheap, emotive images no doubt accelerated its dissemination. The juxtaposition–of “Jivanka” and Benjamin Netanyahu celebrating in Jerusalem while Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians at the Gaza border–proved irresistible to reporters. The BBC’s Katty Kay, for example, was quick to point out that President Trump’s warm words for the Jewish state came while there were “41 dead on the Israel Gaza border today.” An AFP White House correspondent posted the two sets of images side-by-side–a smiling and clapping Bibi next to a photo of fire and smoke from Gaza–with the words: “Quite the disconnect.” He had garnered more than 2,600 retweets as of this writing.

Then there was Peter Beinart (Marshall, declined): “While Jewish + Christian bigots celebrate an occupied city, Jewish soldiers kill people fleeing an open-air prison. As a great lover of Zion said long ago, ‘This is not the way.'” Yes, “fleeing.” That is an interesting way to describe a concerted, Iranian-regime-funded operation to violate Israeli sovereignty and do “whatever is possible, to kill, throw stones,” as the Washington Post quoted one of the “protesters” describing the movement’s goals.

The Palestinians’ more sophisticated friends know what Hamas is all about.

“The Jews who lived in Europe would always bake a large pastry… mixed with the blood of a victim…from among those who were not Jews… a little boy, whom they would place in a perforated barrel full of spikes…” “Because of this, the European peoples loathed the presence of the Jews… they were…the mechanism for the commission of every crime… source of all…corruption…”

Shockingly, this is not some obscure accusation from generations ago in Europe, but a statement from an article written just last week by Dr. Mustafa Al-Lidawi, a former Hamas official, while in Israel we celebrated the Jewish holiday of Purim. The Ma’an News Agency (MNA) — “the largest independent TV, radio and online media group in the West Bank and Gaza Strip”, according to its own website — found it appropriate to publish this in an article it ran about the Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from the evil Persian Haman.

This medieval blood libel was brought to readers courtesy of MNA’s generous Western sponsors. On its website, the news agency gives special thanks to two countries in particular: “MNA was launched with generous funding from the Danish Representative Office to the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Netherlands Representative Office to the PA”.

One cannot help but wonder, whether this was the kind of “news” Denmark and the Netherlands had in mind, when they helped launch the agency in 2005?

According to NGO monitor, MNA is funded (last available figures are from 2014) by Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States, among others. In 2016, Ma’an Television Network received €427,200 (roughly $500,000) from the European Union for “Leveraging Media Initiatives to Promote Participatory Engagement in the Peace Process.” Ma’an Network received £730,000 (roughly $1 million) in 2015-2017 from the United Kingdom as part of a “multimedia project to raise awareness of, and seek to prevent, violence against women and girls.”

Western European nations, claiming to be against all forms of racism and supremacism, lavishly fund Muslim Jew-hatred. It makes for a special kind of irony, when that lavish funding helps promote old European blood libels.

It has become a platitude repeated ad nauseam by former Israeli security officials, that the PA must not be weakened, because this might imperil Israel.

The reasoning is that even though the PA is bad, at least they cooperate — to a greater or lesser degree — with their Israeli counterparts, whereas Israel does not know what radical monster would take over after a collapsed PA.

This past Sunday, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a bill that would deduct the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) salaries to convicted terrorists and their families from the tax revenues Israel transfers annually to the PA.

Israel transfers millions of dollars each year to the PA in customs duties levied on goods destined for Palestinian markets that transit through Israeli ports. If passed by the Knesset, the proposed legislation would enable Israel to either deduct the funds from the revenues or “freeze” the payments.

“Soon, this theater of the absurd will come to an end, and the salaries of the terrorists that we will withhold from [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud] Abbas will be used to prevent terrorism and compensate victims,” said Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman about the proposed bill.

Predictably, parts of the Israeli security establishment were opposed to the proposed legislation, fearing that it could weaken the PA. Similar fears have been expressed by a group calling itself Commanders for Israel’s Security, which reportedly represents hundreds of retired Israeli military officials, regarding the US Taylor Force Act.

The Taylor Force Act, which thus far has passed the US House of Representatives and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would end US funding of the PA, unless the PA stops paying its salaries to terrorists and their families.

However, Commanders for Israel’s Security have voiced concerns that the Taylor Force Act would “undermine PA stability; expand the circle of frustration and hostility; erode the security coordination” and deny the PA funding for “vital economic projects”. All this, say the retired military personnel, would “compromise Israeli security”.

Since when is stuffing your own pockets and using the rest to pay terrorists a “vital economic project”? One might argue, however, that the PA has done exactly that – created a monster that ceaselessly incites the murder of Israelis and the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state.

Violent husband Nimr Mahmoud Ahmed Jamal, who murdered three people in Har Adar two weeks ago, was the latest in a long line of depressive, mentally ill, or "whacked out" Palestinian terrorists for whom the killing of Jews blotted out the label "crazy" that Palestinian society had previously stuck on them.

By killing, Jamal, like dozens of other troubled murderers, resituated himself in his society as normative, and even bought himself a ticket into the Palestinian hall of fame as a shahid [martyr] for the price of the three people he killed two weeks ago.

The more mentally ill Palestinians carry out lethal terrorist attacks, the more people get used to categorizing their bloodfests as a separate genre of attack, which presents a problem. Even more than this approach goes easy on the attackers from the "new" group, it goes easy on Palestinian society, which embraces them.

A healthy, sane society keeps the deranged at a distance and cares for the troubled. But in Palestinian society, murdering Jews gives even the mentally ill and those in the midst of various emotional crises a place of honor in its ethno-religious pantheon.

In Palestinian society, the murder of Jews allows even the most delusional and problematic marginalized characters under the perverted canopy of the institution of martyrdom.

There are very few mentally ill Jews, if any, who have set out to murder Arabs as a solution to their problems. In most enlightened nations it is also difficult to find people with personal problems who will find solace for their pain in suicide bombings and killing members of other religions or nationalities.

The obvious conclusion, therefore, is that the personal troubles of Palestinian men or women who attempt to murder Jews are merely the tip of the iceberg – the foam of insanity that floats atop and feeds off much deeper currents.

Britain: End the foreign aid madness funding Palestinian schools named for terrorists

...‘This is how it works,’ said Anwar Abu Quak, an English teacher in Ramallah. ‘They apply for funds, they get funds and they claim they will remove things from our textbooks. Then the principals tell teachers to take it upon themselves to teach the right things. Why should we listen to the foreign donors? They are buying the politicians and civil servants with their money, not those of us teaching the kids.’

Britain is pumping huge sums of foreign aid into Palestinian schools named after mass murderers and Islamist militants, which openly promote terrorism and encourage pupils to see child killers as role models.

A Mail on Sunday investigation has found 24 schools named after Palestinian terrorists and evidence of widespread encouragement of violence against Israel by teachers, with terrorists routinely held up as heroes for schoolchildren.

Pictures of ‘martyrs’ are posted on school walls, revolutionary slogans and symbols are painted on premises used by youngsters, sports events are named after teenage terrorists and children are encouraged to act out shooting Israeli soldiers in plays.

In a sick classroom play children at the Al-Surra School surround a classmate dressed as an Israeli soldier to play out a mock 'execution'

Head teachers openly admit flouting attempts by British and European donors to control the curriculum at schools. They print overtly political study aids for pupils, some even denying the existence of Israel, and teachers boast of encouraging pupils to emulate teenage attackers killed in the most recent wave of terrorist attacks in the region.

One senior teacher from a prominent West Bank school, asked what he would say to a pupil threatening to attack Israelis, told this newspaper: ‘I would tell them go in the name of God.’

“The Best Home,”: A place where children are raised to be murderers - by Stephen M. Flatow

...In 1996, then-First Lady Hillary Clinton wrote a children's book titled “It Takes a Village.” She explained how a child is shaped in part by the various people who live in his or her village and the cultural influences to which the child is subjected. The “Palestinian village,” sadly, is a place where children are raised to be murderers. There’s no point pretending otherwise.

Like schoolchildren everywhere, Palestinian Arab children occasionally are assigned by their teachers to write poems. But the poetry they produce is not like that of children in the U.S. or elsewhere in the free world.

Palestinian Media Watch reports that twice in the past month, a children’s program on official Palestinian Authority Television (PA TV) featured children reciting their poems. Among the most common terms they used: “blood,” “slaughter” and “revolution.”

The PA TV program is called “The Best Home,” and the children who were selected to read their poems on air were obviously meant to exemplify what children in “the best Palestinian homes” should believe.

Arafat has a museum, the latest tribute to the mass murderer funded by American taxpayers

...That collection of lies, shameful treacheries and bigotry is why Palestine exists. It all deserves a proper museum. A museum of lies and massacres that would hold Arafat’s looted Nobel Peace Prize and the names of his victims. That would showcase the mansions of Gaza and the lies of the press. It would remind us that that the Holocaust was built not on mere force, but on liars and their accomplices. And there could be no better name for such an institution than the Arafat Museum.

On the anniversary of his death, it is important that we remember Yasser Arafat (8 or 9 other names, including the ubiquitous Mohammed, may be added as needed) as a murderer, a liar and a thief.

Twelve years ago, Arafat, the Egyptian terrorist leader who founded an imaginary country on mass murder and our foreign aid, died covered in his own vomit and diarrhea. The possible causes of death, in order of probability, were AIDS, according to his private doctor and the head of the PFLP terror group, an Israeli laser, according to the Palestinian ambassador to Sri Lanka, thallium poisoning by Israel, polonium poisoning by his Palestinian rivals and the trained ape from Poe’s Murders in the Rue Morgue.

The investigation into Arafat’s death went on for over a decade and dragged in the Institut de Radiophysique in Switzerland, Russia’s Federal Medical-Biological Agency and a mysteriously nameless team of French experts. Arafat’s “temporary” mausoleum, a building that looks like a Florida motel outhouse built on a giant scale, was rummaged and his rotting remains were poked over by three international teams who could agree on nothing except that the dead terrorist was probably dead.

Probably. It was hard to tell if Arafat was alive even back when he was still breathing and ranting.

In the weeks before the 12th anniversary of Yasir Arafat's death, his face is all over the Palestinian Arab news.

The Fatah Facebook page is literally filled with images of Arafat. It has hundreds, and scores have been posted in the past month before this minor anniversary.

More interestingly, Mahmoud Abbas is relegated to a minor role in the Fatah Facebook page, with only occasional stories about him. He is lost in the glare of Arafat worship.

So Abbas does what he has to do - he tries to get some of Arafat's popularity reflected on him.

Accepting Palestinian Culture That Treats Killers as Role Models - by Jonathan Tobin

Palestinians are incredulous. When the Palestine Media Watch website noted that, for the fourth time, the Palestinian Authority had named one of its schools after the late head of the 1970’s terror group Black September, the news created a bit of an uproar in Israel. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Netanyahu accused the PA of glorifying terrorists, but the response from the PA wasn’t the least bit defensive. Though the Obama administration continues to insist that the PA is a partner for peace, the PA gave a telling answer to the Israeli charge. The Palestinian Authority official in charge of Tulkarem—the district where the most recent Salah Khalaf school was dedicated—said the following: “The occupation [Israel] is delusional if it thinks the Palestinian people can change its culture.”

This statement reveals something that most peace process advocates and critics of Israel either don’t understand or willfully miss. The PA’s repeated refusals of Israeli peace offers isn’t rooted in how many homes are built by Israelis in existing West Bank settlements or differences over where the border between a putative Palestinian state and Israel should be drawn. Rather, the problem is something far more deep-seated: culture.

As poll after poll of Palestinian public opinion has shown over the years, support for violence against Israelis and Jews and the rejection of Israel’s legitimacy isn’t merely a policy preference or a position taken by the PA at the United Nations. It is rooted in a Palestinian political culture that views the Jews as having no rights to any part of the country, and sees violence taken against them is an act of patriotism.

Like his boss, Yasir Arafat, Khalaf’s role in history as the author of some of the most brazen and depraved terror incidents of the postwar era secured him a place of honor among Palestinians. Black September claimed to be distinct from the Palestine Liberation Organization but was, in fact, under Arafat’s orders. In that capacity, Khalaf planned the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre of Israeli athletes, a series of airplane hijackings, as well as the assassination of two American diplomats in Sudan. Like Arafat, Khalaf later posed as enough of a moderate to convince Secretary of State James Baker that he was someone that the U.S. should deal with. He was never held accountable by the U.S. for his attacks on Americans, let alone Israelis. And he was eventually killed by a member of the Abu Nidal splinter group as part of an internecine Palestinian conflict.

Children have long become an integral part of "military" parades held in the Gaza Strip by various Palestinian groups. But this form of child abuse does not seem to bother human rights organizations or the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), whose declared goal is to "work for a world in which every child has a fair chance in life and a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential -- to the benefit of a better world." It seems that UNICEF does not believe that its mandate extends to Palestinian children, who are exploited to serve the interests of Islamist groups.

In the Gaza Strip, children are taught not only to hate Israel, but also to prepare themselves for jihad (holy war) against the "Zionist enemy." Hamas, the Islamic Jihad Movement, and other radical groups see children as future "soldiers" in the war to eliminate Israel. They raise children to regard suicide bombers and jihadis as role models.

Children in this world do not dream about becoming doctors, pilots or engineers. Rather, they dream of destroying Israel and "liberating Palestine." In fact, an entire generation of Palestinians, particularly those in the Gaza Strip, has been raised on the glorification of suicide bombers and anyone who kills a Jew. With enough sacrifices, they are taught, the destruction of Israel is not a far-fetched dream. They alone embody the future hope of the Palestinians to see Israel removed from the face of the earth. Forget becoming a physician: their job is to continue what their fathers failed to achieve.

Efrat, punishing good neighbors and the goal of a Jew-free state

...Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was bitterly criticized by the Obama administration for saying that by demanding the dismantling of all Jewish communities in the West Bank as well as parts of Jerusalem, the PA was demonstrating that its goal was a Jew-free state. His assertion that this demand amounted to ethnic cleansing was blasted as unhelpful to the cause of peace. What happened in Efrat this past week showed how right he was.

What happened in Efrat, the city in the territories 12 miles from Jerusalem, was exactly what those who wish for peace in the Middle East say should be happening.

Palestinians were invited on Wednesday to visit the home of the mayor of Efrat to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot. The event was discussed in a Washington Post feature, which described a friendly gathering that demonstrated how people of good will could work to resolve differences. It also noted that some of the Arabs who were invited had declined to come out of fear that they would be seen as betraying the Palestinian cause. As it turns out, they were right. The next day the Palestinian Authority arrested four of the guests who attended the holiday celebration. As of Sunday, the four were still in custody and their families were seeking their release by publicly blaming the Jews for “tricking” them into breaking bread with their enemies. That’s the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a nutshell.

During the weeklong Jewish festival of Tabernacles, Jews invite their friends and neighbors to dine in their Sukkahs, the temporary huts intended to recall the dwellings the Israelites lived in after their liberation from Egypt during their journey to the Promised Land. So what better way to promote coexistence for the Jews of Efrat, a town just south of Jerusalem in the West Bank, than to have local Palestinians come to the mayor’s sukkah where they could drink coffee and get to know their neighbors better?

The barbarians (and their supporters) have their ways and their values. And we have ours.

A year ago, a murderous Arab-on-Israeli terrorist attack in Jerusalem's Old City took the lives of two young Jewish men:

The two died of their wounds shortly after being stabbed in Jerusalem’s Old City by a Palestinian terrorist. Banita’s wife was in serious condition and their two-year-old baby was lightly wounded. She was taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem and was undergoing surgery. The toddler was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment where he remained in stable condition. Lavi, a Jerusalem resident, leaves behind a wife and seven children. A rabbi at the Old City’s Ateret Cohanim yeshiva who lived nearby, he had rushed to the scene when he heard screaming in the street. A year has gone by - twelve months filled with who-knows-what weighty challenges, unthinkable difficulties and corrosive, unfathomable, endless pain for the parents and families the two murdered Jews left behind.

In the conventional way of thinking about such matters, the minds of those irretrievably damaged family members are undoubtedly filled with thoughts of vengeance, of bloodshed and of evening the score.

That, at least, is how some ostensibly well-informed people view those of us who have been at the receiving end of Arab-on-Israeli savagery.
