Sports is considered a place where politics and conflict are put aside - but not in the Palestinian Authority. A football tournament for high school boys in Hebron, arranged by the local Fatah branch, named all 11 teams after terrorists - including terror leaders responsible for most of the deaths from terror Israel has suffered since its founding. Six were top Palestinian terror leaders and founders of terror organizations, while the other five were terrorists or members of terror organizations. The PA Ministry of Education endorsed the event's role modeling of terrorists with a representative who "honored the winning players and teams."

...Ceasing incitement pulls the rug from under the already shaky feet of the PA. and is a demand that cannot be acceded to. If the incitement brings people, mainly youth, to grab a knife in order to stab Israelis, or to load a gun in order to shoot at a civilian car, that is a necessary result of the very existence of the Palestinian Authority, whose entire being is contingent on a total war against Israel, one also being waged in the media, academia, the courts and the marketplace in Israel and around the world.
There are a good many people, both in Israel and the rest of the world, who note the Palestinian Autonomy's (PA) anti-Israel incitement and activity in international institutions, hear the hate-filled rhetoric of "moderate leader" Mahmoud Abbas and ask themselves some pointed questions:
Are the Palestinians peace partners or do they actually want to establish their state on the ruins of the Jewish one? And if their goal is the destruction of Israel, why don't they hide their plans until such time as they have a state with the ability to carry them out?
The answers to these questions are part of the very essence and raison d’être of the Palestinian Authority. This administrative entity was not established by the Arab League, founded in 1945 (one wonders why), before the establishment of the state of Israel, nor by Egypt and Jordan who controlled Judea, Samaria and Gaza from 1948 to 1967 – but by Israel, whose government failed in its attempt to expel the Hamas and Islamic Jihad leadership to Lebanon in 1992, and naively expected Arafat to eliminate Hamas and Islamic Jihad "without the courts and the Betselem Human Rights NGO" as Yitzchak Rabin phrased it This is the slogan which enabled the government of Rabin, Peres and Beilin to sell the Oslo Accords to Israelis.
Accordingly, there is no escaping the fact that Israel expected the PA to be a ruling body that would do its dirty work, dishing out to Hamas and Jihad what they deserve. In this, as opposed to Israel, they would be unrestrained by human rights organizations and the Supreme Court of Justice, those self-appointed guardians of universal ethics that allow terror – in Israel and outside it – to blossom almost without interference. In other words, Israel brought Arafat in so that he would take care of the leaders of Hamas without any moral constraints, without human rights organizations looking over his shoulder and without a legal system worthy of the name. Looking back, one tries vainly to understand what exactly Rabin's government, those so moral leftists and lovers of democracy, were thinking? That an Arab would kill an Arab for us because we are incapable of it? Is there anything less moral than that?
The problem with the government of Israel and the entire Jewish people is that Arafat, his advisors and those who keep his spirit alive worldwide had no intentions of being the "border guards" of Israel for the Jews. All he – and they – did from the minute the PA was established in 1994 was a charade, they actually gave a green light – openly and subtly – to Hamas and Jihad to do whatever they wished, because had the PA leaders not allowed these terror organizations enough rope, the PA ruling echelons would have lost what little legitimacy they still retained in the eyes of their constituency since the noticeable shrinking of their power base with Arafat's death.
...The effects of decades of education for hate will not be erased in a short time, even if the PA/PLO and Hamas are taken down, but the spigot of social media incitement can be shut off relatively quickly. Let’s interdict the flow of incitement immediately, as aggressively as we act against weapons shipments to Hezbollah. And we should begin the process of undoing the Oslo mistake as soon as possible.
Although the perpetrators of the recent terrorist incidents are mostly young people not associated with terror organizations whose actions are not explicitly ordered by the Palestinian Arab leadership, they are nevertheless part of a planned campaign that is orchestrated by that leadership. The strings are pulled effectively by way of social media, with no direct link between the ‘commanders’ and the ‘soldiers’. This is one of the reasons that it is so difficult to interdict the terrorists before they strike.
The current wave of violence and terrorism is part of the overall “popular resistance” strategy adopted by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Fatah at the Sixth Fatah Conference in August 2009. It is manifested by rising and falling levels of popular terrorism. The current wave (which is unique in some aspects) is one of the most serious. Its popular terrorism includes riots, throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, and stabbing and vehicular attacks which are supported and condoned by the PA. The current wave of Palestinian terrorism, like those before it, has included several shooting attacks, which are not included in the modus operandi of the “popular resistance,” but the PA does not condemn them, and in effect supports them.
The long-term objective of the Arab leadership is to foment violence and chaos in Israel so as to interfere with her ability to defend herself against external threats and also to provide an excuse for intervention by the ‘international community’ to force Israel to make territorial and other concessions to the PLO and to Hamas. A weakened and attenuated Israel, they believe, will ultimately suffer a defeat in a regional conflict severe enough to cause enough of the population to flee so that the state will disintegrate and they can take over.
Although Hamas and the PLO will fight each other for control, they have consistently cooperated in the endeavor to disrupt the Jewish state. This is nothing more than an updated version of the PLO’s ‘phased plan’ of 1974.
This intifada is different from the last one because control over the violence is almost entirely decentralized:
In most instances [the terrorist] carries out the attack by himself following a spontaneous personal decision without instructions from any organization or leadership. He does not follow an Islamist ideology (some of the terrorists lived fairly secular lives) and does not belong to a terrorist organization, although he feeds off the incitement to terrorism and anti-Israel hatred disseminated by the various terrorist organizations. … The Palestinian terrorist who carries out an attack in Israel is motivated by Palestinian nationalism, and for the past six years he has been deeply influenced by reports of popular terrorism. He has also been influenced by events on the Temple Mount and by the false slogan “Al-Aqsa mosque is in danger.” He is personally and socially frustrated and feeds off the anti-Israel hatred and incitement on the social networks (mainly Facebook).
Indeed, Micah Lakin Avni, whose father Richard Lakin was murdered in Jerusalem last month, has called it “The Facebook Intifada,” and called for action by social media providers to stop the use of their networks for incitement. They are used for promulgation of lies about Israeli actions (“al-Aqsa is in danger,” “executing Palestinians and planting knives on them”), encouraging terrorism, giving practical advice on ways to kill, and honoring those who have perpetrated terrorist acts – especially ‘martyrs’.
...He may not don the keffiyeh that was worn by Yasser Arafat, nor wave a gun in the halls of the United Nations. But even if the packaging is slightly different, the contents remain the same. Abbas, like his predecessor, stands in the way of peace and aims to do Israel harm. The time has come to treat him accordingly.

For the past decade, ever since Mahmoud Abbas took the reins of the Palestinian Authority in January 2005, the international community has gone out of its way to portray him as a moderate.
Ignoring his long record of anti-Israel incitement and Holocaust denial, American presidents, European prime ministers and even various Israeli leaders often spoke of Abbas in glowing terms, describing him as a man of peace and a visionary.
Indeed, earlier this year, when Abbas visited the White House on March 17, US President Barack Obama told reporters, "I have to commend President Abbas. He has been somebody who has consistently renounced violence, has consistently sought a diplomatic and peaceful solution that allows for two states, side by side, in peace and security."
More recently, at the Gaza donor conference held in Cairo on October 12, US Secretary of State John Kerry went out of his way to heap praise on the Palestinian leader, saying, "President Abbas, thank you for your perseverance and your partnership."
But the jig is up. Abbas' behavior, along with his recent anti-Israel remarks, clearly demonstrates that his ostensible moderation is nothing more than a hoax.
Calling Abbas a moderate is the diplomatic equivalent of asserting that Elvis isn't dead, the Boogeyman is hiding under your bed, and Keeping up with the Kardashians is quality entertainment.
Take for example Abbas' decidedly immoderate remarks last Friday to a Fatah Party gathering.
Referring to Jews who wish to visit Jerusalem's Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, Abbas denounced them as "herds of cattle" and "settlers," and called on Palestinians to use "any means" to stop them.
"It is not enough to say the settlers came, but they must be barred from entering the compound by any means," he said, adding, "This is our Aqsa... and they have no right to enter it and desecrate it" – as if the very presence of Jewish visitors in the area constituted an abomination.
If that's not a call to violence, what is? Needless to say, Abbas' scandalous outburst did not fall on deaf ears. Less than 48 hours later, Palestinian hoodlums defaced the Temple Mount, spray-painting swastikas and other offensive anti-Semitic imagery at the site whose sanctity they claim they wish to protect.
...But if the president continues to double down on a policy of letting the Palestinians off the hook, it is laying the groundwork for a repeat of the same disaster that ended the Oslo process. The resulting bloodshed should be blamed primarily on Abbas. But Obama, and those Israelis who continue to lie about Abbas for what they believe is the sake of peace, will also bear some responsibility.

With Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas meeting today with President Obama, the focus on the Middle East peace process has shifted, at least for the moment, away from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and his alleged shortcomings. But while Netanyahu’s most recent meeting with the president was preceded by an Obama interview with Bloomberg’s Jeffrey Goldberg in which the Israeli was lambasted and Abbas praised, there was no such ambush for the Palestinian. Most everybody in Washington and a great many Israelis are at pains to paint Abbas in the best possible light. When Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon accurately described the Palestinian as someone who would never be a partner for a final peace agreement, Cabinet colleague Tzipi Livni and Israeli President Shimon Peres both spoke up in his defense.
Livni, who has at times criticized Abbas herself, did not specifically refute any of Yaalon’s points but preferred instead to say that his shortcomings and record were irrelevant to the task at hand and must be put aside. Peres spoke in the same vein saying that Abbas was a “good partner” and that the point of the talks was to move ahead toward peace regardless of the obstacle. That seems much in line with the American approach that is to never directly criticize Palestinian incitement and the refusal of Abbas and his fellow Fatah members to give up their hopes of flooding Israel with the descendants of the 1948 refugees.
In short, peace process advocates believe the only way to plow ahead to an agreement is to keep the pressure up on Netanyahu to give the maximum while treating Abbas with kid gloves, all the while fearing to offend him or to give his enemies within Fatah, not to mention Hamas and Islamic Jihad rivals, any ammunition with which to attack him as soft on the Israelis. Anything else, they tell us, risks blowing up the process leaving no hope for peace.
But the problem here isn’t so much the double standard for Netanyahu or even the blatant dishonesty involved in American and Israeli officials attesting to the sincerity and good intentions of the Palestinian leader. It’s that this theory of peace negotiating has already been tried and failed with disastrous results.
I know it’s hard for many in the mainstream media to think back as far as last week or last month (ancient history in the news business), let alone 10, 15, or 20 years back. But the theory of negotiating with the Palestinians that is being employed by both the Obama administration and Israelis like Livni and Peres, was already tried in the 1990s.

No matter how much the US tries to help the Palestinians, it will always be viewed by many of them as an enemy.
Last week, President Barack Obama gave $147 million to the Palestinians. A few days later, Palestinians demonstrated in Ramallah against the US and boycotted a ceremony held by the US Consulate-General. The protesters carried placards which read: "USAID go out!" and "We reject aid from those who deny our people the right to self-determination."
USAID is the leading provider of bilateral development assistance to the Palestinians. This agency has given the Palestinians more than $3.5 billion since 1994 for programs in the areas of democracy and governance, education, health, humanitarian assistance, private enterprise and water resources and infrastructure.
The demonstration in Ramallah was held outside a hotel where US officials organized a ceremony marking World Press Freedom Day. Palestinian Authority policemen were deployed outside the hotel to prevent angry demonstrators from disrupting the ceremony.
The protesters chanted slogans denouncing US "bias" in favor of Israel. They accused the US of "covering up" for Israeli "war crimes" and using blocking efforts against the Palestinian leadership to seek UN recognition of a Palestinian state.
Since the Oslo Accords in the early 1990s, the governments of the West have concentrated on delivering the objective of two states for two peoples: a secure, Jewish and democratic State of Israel beside a viable Palestinian state.
In many ways progress has been made. The foundations for a Palestinian state have been laid and we have witnessed West Bank growth reach unprecedented levels. However, ideological progress has been limited, as incidents of official incitement and hate education have continued to poison the relationship between Palestinians and Israelis. With this in mind, the question of Palestinian rejectionism and its most potent expression in the form of incitement against Israel, especially where that concerns the glorification of terrorism, is clearly of paramount concern.
So prepare to be shocked, and follow this carefully.
It has just been revealed that Matthew Offord MP asked Alistair Burt, Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, the following formal question: “... what recent representations his Department has received on the honouring by the Palestinian Authority of Palestinian citizens that have participated in terrorist acts?"

The things done for and with their own children by Palestinian Arab society have long been the subject of extremely critical comment, and with justification. It's almost impossible to imagine a peace between two peoples based (as inevitably it would have to be) on some degree of painful compromise, when the Arab side consistently and continually educates its children for hatred, demonization and death. Palestinian Authority TV's programs are beamed into most of the homes in the territories controlled by Fatah, the terrorism-friendly political party headed in the past by Arafat and today by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas. A week ago, on 24th January, it covered a Fatah celebration in Lebanon: the glorious 47th anniversary of Fatah's founding. (Reminder: 47 years ago, when Fatah began its chapter of the war of terrorism against us, the total number of square miles "occupied" by the hated Zionist entity was precisely zero.) If, like us, you are unable to tune in or to comprehend the Arabic commentary, Palestinian Media Watch has just published a report - with transcript, video and pictures.
The text reads:
"Our children are our honor and glory. They were created to be fertilizer for the land of Palestine, and for our pure land to be saturated with their blood."
What kind of future do youngsters raised to see themselves as fertilizer build for themselves? And who is at fault - because someone surely is.

We are told, day after day, that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is a genuine moderate committed to achieving a peace settlement with Israel. In addition to the international community, even some Israelis – admittedly a dwindling minority – also chant this mantra.
Abbas and his chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, bolster this theme by uttering soothing statements in English, endorsing peace to the gullible international community. Yet they speak with forked tongues because in Arabic, to their own people, they deny Israel’s right to exist and promote vicious hatred against Jews.
They also claim to have reneged violence. But the PA never conceded that terrorism was immoral. They simply concluded that having failed to achieve their objectives by violence, their goals could best be promoted by temporarily suspending terrorism in order to gain Western support.
Abbas made it clear that he “had the honor of firing the first shot in 1965” and was only opposed to terrorist attacks “at this time” for tactical reasons and that “in the future things may change.”
Yet, even within this framework, Fatah has still succeeded in killing more Israelis than Hamas.
The true objectives of the PA are reflected in the poisonous hatred against Jews and Israel inculcated into their people through the broad range of institutions they control, permeating every level of society– from kindergarten upwards.
This can be traced to the very inception of the Oslo Accords. Before that, the relationship between Palestinians and Israelis, while far from ideal, was certainly better than it is now; current polls indicate that 84 percent of Palestinians endorse the murder of Israelis.
Afraid it's "that time" again: Time for a review of what's going on with our "partners for peace" and their brothers in Hamas. Hate doing this. But every so many days...
As was totally predictable, the "talks" supervised by Jordan have gone nowhere and are likely finished. (Although, as I write there is an unconfirmed report that the low level talks may continue for another month. We'll see.)
You realize, of course, that the lack of progress in the talks is all Israel's fault. Must be, because that's what PA leaders are saying. We failed to submit a detailed plan of our demands for security and borders (to which I say, Baruch Hashem!); we merely submitted principles of what we think must be dealt with. The PA says the deadline for us to do so was January 26. Israel says the PA is counting wrong. The Quartet had said both side were to submit plans within three months. The PA calculates that three months as having ended now. Israel says it ends three months after the Jordanian talks began.

For background information: It is Israel's policy generally (not always adhered to as perfectly as might be desired) not to reveal specifics of what might be conceded until everything is on the table and dealt with -- "nothing is decided until everything is decided."

At the Cabinet meeting yesterday, Netanyahu reported, "As things stand now, according to what happened over the past few days - when the Palestinians refused even to discuss Israel's security needs with us - the signs are not particularly good."
Naturally, we will continue to see pressure brought to bear, to bring the parties back to the table. Catherine Ashton, EU foreign policy chief, was in the region last week, meeting with Israeli and PA officials.

What particularly enrages -- although this is hardly new -- is that the Western world knows full well that Israel has no "partner for peace." It's simply that leaders are mindful of their relationship with Arab nations, and pander to the growing number of Muslims within their own nations, as well as to the left wing pro-Palestinian segment of their electorates. And so, they have an agenda that has nothing to do with facts or justice.
Please see this Palestinian Media Watch bulletin revealing the fact -- complete with video clip -- that Palestinian Authority TV twice last week broadcast greetings to Hakim Awad, convicted of murdering five members of the Fogel family last year, from members of his family and from the TV host. From his mother, who calls him the "apple of my eye," and his aunt, who refers to him as "the hero, the legend."

President Shimon Peres today (Sunday), 8.1.12, at his Jerusalem Residence, met with a US Senate Appropriations Committee delegation led by Committee Chairman Senator (D-HI) Daniel K. Inouye and including the Committee's ranking Republican, Senator (R-MS) Thad Cochran, and senior Committee member Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD).
... On the peace process, the President reiterated his view that Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen is a serious and positive partner for peace and that Israel and the Palestinians must proceed to direct and secret negotiations toward a solution, given that the issues on the agenda are well-known.

PA TV celebrates terror attack that killed 37 civilians to commemorate Fatah anniversary

As part of the PA TV broadcasts to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the Fatah movement, PA TV chose to once again glorify the most lethal terror attack in Israel's history with two music videos glorifying Dalal Mughrabi and the attack she led.
In 1978 a group of terrorists led by Mughrabi sailed from Lebanon to Israel to carry out a terror attack. They hijacked a bus and killed 37 Israeli civilians.
One PA TV music video described the terrorists as "heroes... who shook the land, brought down mountains," and mentioned how "the coast was stormy with the glory of Dalal Mughrabi."
Another video, which was broadcast three times, also honored the terrorists, describing them as having "no fear of death or the darkness of prison."
Both videos showed pictures of Dalal Mughrabi and her team of terrorists sailing in rubber boats, going ashore on the Israeli coast as they went towards their terror attack.
Every year, PA TV celebrates Fatah's anniversary with several days of special broadcasts with live coverage of rallies, music videos, archival material, and special programs. These two music videos glorifying the killing of 37 civilians in the most lethal terror attack in Israel's history were broadcast both this year and last year as part of Fatah's celebrations.
The official PA daily chose to include the following article glorifying Fatah's violence and specifically mentioning Mughrabi, by columnist Fathi Al-Biss:
"The Fatah in my mind is glory; honor; sacrifice; giving; defiance; resistance; dedication of life, blood and property; altruism, humility, love, the meeting on the battlefield, respect for others... The Fatah in my mind is...the heroism of Dalal Mughrabi...The Fatah in my mind is the first bullet; the first blood; and the first echoing scream that split the skies calling for revolution, for liberty..."

As part of this rewriting of history, a regular columnist on religious affairs in the official PA daily recently made the false claim that the Jews changed the original Arabic names of places in Israel into Hebrew names. Is'haq Feleifel cited six cities that he said originally had Arabic names, when in fact all of those names appear in the Hebrew Bible long before Arabic names were given:
Jerusalem, capital of the nation of Israel/Judea (1000 BCE - 70 CE), mentioned 670 times in the Hebrew Bible. First reference: Joshua 10:1; Hebron, first capital of the tribe of Judah, mentioned 73 times in the Hebrew Bible. First reference: Genesis 13:18; Atarot, mentioned four times in the Hebrew Bible. First reference: Numbers 32:3; Shechem, capital of Israel after the nation divided [922 BCE], mentioned 64 times in the Hebrew Bible (including a small number of references to two people of that name). First reference: Genesis 33:18; Ashkelon, a Philistine city, mentioned nine times in the Hebrew Bible. First reference: Judges 1:18
The sixth city he mentioned, Tel Aviv, is also mentioned in the Bible [Ezekiel 3:15] as a location in Babylon where Jews settled after being exiled from Judea in 586 BCE. That name is the source for today's Tel Aviv. All these Biblical names predate by many years the names the PA religion teacher claims are the original Arabic names.
The following is from the article by the official PA daily's columnist on religious affairs, Is'haq Feleifel:
"The great and exalted Allah commanded the angel Gabriel to place Muhammad upon the riding beast [named] Al-Buraq, which was a cross between horse and donkey. The night journey was both physical and spiritual... Once he [Muhammad] reached the Al-Aqsa Mosque, (PMW note: the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was not yet built in the time of Muhammad. The "night journey" mentioned in the Quran is dated to 621 CE. The mosque was built on the Temple Mount by the son of Ummayad Caliph Abd Al-Malik 84 years later in 705 CE.) the angel Gabriel removed Muhammad from upon Al-Buraq's back, and then he tied the beast to the Al-Buraq rock, which was called the 'Al-Buraq Wall'. The Jews changed its name to the 'Wailing Wall', because the Jews are always trying to change Arabic names into Hebrew names, especially when it comes to prayer sites or names of towns and villages. For example, they call Al-Quds 'Jerusalem'; Al-Khalil [they call] 'Hebron'; Atara - 'Atarot, Nablus - 'Shechem', Tel Al-Rabi'a - 'Tel Aviv'(PMW note: 'Rabi'a' is the Arabic translation of the Hebrew word 'aviv', meaning 'spring'); Askelan - Ashkelon. There is not enough room to list all the names which have been replaced with false names. Even the 'Torah' falsified, changed and forged; this is the way of the Jews - they always try to change the real names to other, false names, in order to erase the [historical] facts." [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 1, 2011]
In a second article fabricating an ancient Palestinian history, PA columnist Feleifel claimed that Palestinian history in the land of Israel dates back to the Biblical period, which is historically incorrect. He also wrote that Allah predetermined "Arab and Muslim ownership of Palestine" - meaning Islamic ownership of Israel.
The following is from the second article by the official PA daily's columnist on religious affairs, Is'haq Feleifel:
"The book I wrote a year ago is entitled Palestine Belongs to the Arabs and Muslims, According to the Testimony of the Sovereign of the Universe. This is a Quranic study based on the 'Night Journey' chapter, in which I proved the Arab and Muslim ownership of Palestine and reviewed Palestinian history since the period of the Canaanites, via the Edomites, Emorites, Midianites, Amalekites, Ibrahim bin Azar [the biblical Abraham] and Al-Khader [a reference to the prophet Elijah] in the Islamic sources." If you want to know the real obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace, take a look at what Israel’s “peace partner” is doing in the Balata refugee camp near Nablus. Taysir Nasrallah, a senior member of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party who is currently director-general of the Nablus governor’s office, gave Haaretz reporter Avi Issacharoff a tour of Balata’s seven-year-old community center this week. And while the term “community center” evokes images of peaceful, wholesome activity, what’s actually going on there, by Nasrallah’s own proud account, is anything but:
“We give the kids courses on the right of return and teach them that the Israelis stole their lands. We’ve sent hundreds of camp children into Israel to see the villages and towns that were taken from us. We took them to Jaffa, Ramle.
“Our message is that without a doubt they will return to the places from which they were driven out,” he says.
Jaffa and Ramle aren’t West Bank settlements; they are towns in pre-1967 Israel. And these are the locales Israel’s “peace partner” is teaching Palestinian children to consider their own. Indeed, Issacharoff reported, Nasrallah’s “dream is to have the [community] center move to Jaffa when the day comes”; hence its name: the Jaffa Center. Moreover, children are regularly assigned presentations involving a map of Israel, but “for them it has always been and remains the map of Palestine.”
Then there’s the fact the children are being taught “Israelis stole their lands” – in other words, that Jews have no right to a state in any portion of what is today Israel; they are thieves who must be stripped of their ill-gotten gains. That’s hardly a message conducive to peaceful coexistence.
Nor is the effort to indoctrinate them into demanding a “right of return” – a euphemism for flooding pre-1967 Israel with 4.8 million Palestinian refugees and their descendants who, together with Israel’s 1.6 million Arab citizens, would outnumber its 5.8 million Jews and turn the Jewish state into a second Palestinian one (the first being the judenrein Palestinian state slated for the West Bank and Gaza).
And remember, this isn’t Hamas conducting these indoctrination sessions: It’s Israel’s “peace partner,” the “moderate” Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. Moreover, the PA is targeting precisely those youths it sees as future leaders. Just this week, Issacharoff reported, 35 children completed a leadership course at the center.
It ought to be obvious peace will never be possible as long as even Palestinian “moderates” insist Jews have no right to statehood in any part of this land, that Palestinians should seek to obtain pre-1967 Israel as well as the West Bank and Gaza, and that pre-1967 Israel should become another Arab-majority state instead of a Jewish one. Indeed, this is obvious to most Israelis; that’s why Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu keeps reiterating that Palestinian recognition of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state is the key to peace.
Unfortunately, most Westerners still don’t seem to get it, and that’s precisely why all their efforts to broker a deal keep failing. To solve any problem, you first have to acknowledge its existence.

We recently wrote here about legal decisions taken by the Palestinian Authority to reward Palestinian Arab terrorists with salaries [see 20-May-11: Rewarding the Palestinian Arab terrorists: is this being done in your name?]. Those moves, little remarked upon and generally ignored in international forums, are consistent with steps the PA takes daily to encourage hatred of Jews and Israel and fan the flames of terror. Why the PA continues to be thought of in certain circles as 'moderate' is baffling. Perhaps it's just that people don't know.
Here's a relatively small but disturbing current example of how it works.
The PA controls its own government-funded media channels, ensuring a consistent message reaches the people living under its jurisdiction. Palestinian Media Watch, and almost no one else, does consistent and professional work in tracking those messages. It puts out warnings - to which almost no other media channel reacts - when especially odious and/or dangerous content is identified.
Yesterday PMW issued an alert. It reproduces several quotations (in their context) carried in a publication called Al Hayat Al Jadida (Arabic for "New Life"). Wikipedia says it's an official daily newspaper of the ostensibly secular Palestinian National Authority.
PMW's Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik summarize the PA-sanctioned messages as:
The enemies of Islam are "cultivating evil" against it.
The state of Israel is a "malignant cancerous growth" and its conflict with the Arabs is about faith and existence, and not about land and borders.
The Jewish religion is false, distorted and corrupted.
Jews are inherently evil and have been so since the time of Cain and Abel.
Jews, through their political philosophy Zionism, have a religious plan to take over the world and rule it while forcing non-Jews to submit to their will.
If there is controversy within Palestinian Arab circles over the publication of such filth, we're not aware of it, and we certainly invite anyone who can point to open discussions among Palestinian or other Arabs of the rights and wrongs of teaching things like this to let us know.
Now why do you think so many observers and reporters keep calling the PA and its ruling clique 'moderate' as they do here and here and here and here and here and so on and on? To put it mildly, calling the PA 'moderate' is to give them an easy pass. It implies support for their ideological racism.
We believe institutionalized hate-mongering is absolutely fundamental to the PA nurturing a society which values terrorist martyrdom and acts of murder and destruction. It's all going on in broad daylight, but too many people avert their gaze. It's late, but never too late, to call the Abbas regime what it is: one of the world's leading sponsors of anti-semitism and hate-based education.
All of this is indispensably made possible by funding blindly provided by funders in Australia, the United States, Canada, the European Union and other providers of aid. It's way past time to call in the auditors.

The PA held official events in Ramallah and in Gaza to mark the day the Palestinian Authority mourns the creation of the State of Israel, called "nakba" - "catastrophe" day. Mahmoud Abbas's speech in Gaza was delivered in his name by his advisor and representative. In the speech Abbas denied that Jews have a history in the Land of Israel and claimed a fictitious 9000 year-old Palestinian history dating back to 7000 BCE, which he said made Palestinians "the owners of history."
Abbas's words taunted PM Benjamin Netanyahu, as the representative of Israel:
"Oh, Netanyahu, you are incidental in history; we are the people of history. We are the owners of history."
It should be noted that Abbas's taunting Netanyahu about history is a brazen distortion of known facts. Judean/Israeli history in the Land of Israel dates back thousands of years, and is documented by ancient Jewish and non-Jewish sources, and corroborated by numerous archeological finds, from Hebrew coins to Jewish ritual baths. The Kurkh Monolith, for example, an Assyrian document from the reign of King Shalmaneser III (859-824 BCE), includes the words: "King Ahab of Israel sent 2,000 chariots and 10,000 soldiers."
On the other hand, only recently have Arabs in the region identified as "Palestinians". No historian other than Palestinians have claimed that there was an ancient Palestinian history, and there isn't any reference to a Palestinian-Arab nation in antiquity, as Abbas claims. This is true of Islamic sources as well. The Quran refers to the people of Israel and even the destruction of the Temple [Sura17], but not to Palestinians.
The following is the part of Abbas's speech that was directed to Israel and Netanyahu:
PA moderator of PA Gaza event: "The speech of President Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and President of the Palestinian Authority, will be delivered by the comrade, the great fighter, Abdallah Al-Ifranji, representative and advisor of the President."
Mahmoud Abbas, (delivered by his representative, Abdallah Al-Ifranji): "National reconciliation [between Hamas and Fatah] is required in order to face Israel and Netanyahu. We say to him [Netanyahu], when he claims - that they [Jews] have a historical right dating back to 3000 years BCE - we say that the nation of Palestine upon the land of Canaan had a 7000 year history BCE. This is the truth, which must be understood and we have to note it, in order to say: 'Netanyahu, you are incidental in history. We are the people of history. We are the owners of history.'" "The wish is father to the thought," goes the old saying, and as I showed in a recent post, Mahmoud Abbas's wish, and that of most Palestinian Arabs under his jurisdiction, would appear to be a Palestinian state that entirely replaces Israel (see http://daphneanson.blogspot.com/2011/04/arabs-have-different-concept-of.html)
This ambition is further underscored in the following report, entitled "PA Carries out Ahmadinejad’s Threat and Wipes Israel Off Map" by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu:
'The Palestinian Authority has carried out Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s threat to “wipe Israel off the map” and literally has done so by displaying maps of “Palestine” covering all of Israel at the same time its leaders talk about “two states for two people.”
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Fatah movement that controls the PA in Judea and Samaria, has in effect established a “one-state” solution in Fatah offices and in Palestinian Authority schools and offices.
The Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) has documented that professional unions and private PA groups display maps showing a rifle and a quill over “Palestine,” from the Lebanese border in the north to Eilat in the south and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.
The maps have been circulated at the same time Abbas campaigns for international recognition of the Palestinian Authority based on the borders of Israel as they existed between 1949 and 1967, during which time Jordan was mandated by the United Nations to rule part of Judea and Samaria but then overtook and occupied the entire region, including large swaths of Jerusalem, after the War of Independence in 1948.
Jordan surrendered the areas in the Six-Day War in 1967, and Egypt and Syria did the same in Gaza and the Golan Heights respectively.
The maps declare Abbas’ intentions of making the “1967 borders” the temporary outline of a would-be Palestinian Authority country, even though – as PMW noted – U.S. President Barack Obama has criticized such maps as a security threat to Israel, in the same category as the threat from terrorist groups who want to destroy Israel.
"I will never compromise when it comes to Israel's security,” he told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in 2008. “Not when there are still voices that deny the Holocaust. Not when there are terrorist groups and political leaders committed to Israel's destruction. Not when there are maps across the Middle East that don't even acknowledge Israel's existence."
Nevertheless, the PA’s version “Palestine,” as illustrated on the map with a rifle and quill, was displayed last week at a meeting of the General Union of Palestinian Writers, PMW reported.
The Palestinian Authority has embedded in its school system the ”one-state” idea of a Palestine – without Israel – for years. As far back as 2003, school posters have displayed the Palestinian flag over a map erasing Israel.
The policy has continued unchanged despite statements by Abbas to President Obama that the PA has ceased anti-Israel incitement. Earlier this year, a map in principal’s office in a PA school erases Israel and replaces it with "Palestine", with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flag flying over Israel.'

At the end of March, as this year’s Passover holiday was approaching, the Palestinian Authority honored the terrorist mastermind responsible for the 'Passover Massacre' which claimed the lives of 30 innocent Israeli citizens attending the traditional Passover meal at Netanya's Park Hotel on March 27, 2002.
During this incident, mostly elderly, people were killed and dozens maimed and injured when a suicide bomber, Abdel-Basset Odeh, who was dispatched by terrorist mastermind Abbas Al-Sayed walked into the Park Hotel on the Netanya seafront in the middle of a Passover Seder, a religious ceremony celebrating the Israelites’ freedom from bondage in ancient Egypt.
The suicide bomber, Abdel-Basset Odeh, from a Hamas terror cell in Tulkarm, detonated a large device packed with explosives and shards of metal. Evidence revealed that Al-Sayed was involved in planning the Park Hotel bombing down to the minutest details, from checking the bomber's explosives belt to helping him write his will and making a video of him reading it.
“The Palestinian Authority has chosen a bizarre and troubling way to mark the upcoming Jewish festival of Passover. Despite an often voiced Palestinian commitment to end the glorification of terrorists and incitement to violence, on March 28 Issa Karake, the Palestinian Authority Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, visited the family of Hamas suicide-bomb mastermind Abbas Al-Sayed, awarding them with an official, festive plaque, in celebration of the anniversary of the massacre,” the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its website. http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Terrorism-+Obstacle+to+Peace/Palestinian_incitement/Palestinian_gift_for_Passover_8-Apr-2011.htm.
This incident was reported in a Palestinian daily newspaper- Al Hayat , a copy of which can be found in its entirety on the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The Al-Hayat report includes a photo of the PA Minister of Prison Affairs with Al Sayad's family presenting them a plaque.
“This honor is not the only example of official Palestinian glorification of violence. In recent weeks, the Palestinian leadership named a youth soccer competition in Ramallah after Wafa Idris, the first female suicide bomber. Similarly, they named a square in El Bireh, as well as two schools and a summer camp, in honor of Dalal Mughrabi, commander of the March 11, 1978 massacre of 38 bus passengers on Israel's coastal road,” the Israeli Foreign Affairs website said.
Since Canada has invested money in the Palestinian justice system, The Winnipeg Jewish Review emailed both the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency on April 11, 2011 with the following questions:
1. Since The Canadian International Development Agency [CIDA] is supporting the development of the Justice System in the Palestinian Authority financially, will CIDA be making a statement condemning the awarding of a plaque by the PA Minister of Prisoner Affairs to a terrorist on the anniversary of his Passover massacre?
2.Has CIDA made known or will it make known its displeasure of what the PA Minister of Prisoner Affairs has done to honour the terrorist of the Massacre ?
3.If not, what does CIDA intend to do about this incident?
4.Has the Canadian Representative based in Ramallah made any statement about this? Will he be doing so?
5.How much money has Canada delivered to the PA in 2011 for the development of the PA Justice system?

So many tragedies and disruptions have fallen on Japan and the Middle East in recent weeks, a singular event went almost unnoticed: the extermination of a Jewish family in Itamar, Samaria.
Although this event could seem insignificant -- there were only five victims -- it was nevertheless indicative of what is at stake in the Middle East, and how the world views it.
Even though this was not the first time that Palestinians killed Israelis Jews only because they were Jews, it was the first time in years that murderers sought to kill an entire family, including a three month old baby, using butcher knives, with barbaric and blatant savagery.
It was also the first time that the Israeli government chose to release grisly crime scene photos of the slain.
Other photos were shown the same day of Palestinians celebrating, throwing candy up in the air, at the news of the murders.
Israeli officials might have thought that the disclosure of their nightmarish images would create a shock; that at least some people in the Western world would begin to comprehend the horror and cruelty under the threat of which Israeli Jews constantly live.
Israeli officials might have thought questions would be asked, such as:
What kind of society produces such an inversion of values -- not only urging people to slit the throats of babies, but then, instead of condemning that, treating the murderers as heroes and celebrating what they did?
How could a society with such a taste for blood, that the Palestinian leadership encourages every hour of every day, exist peacefully next to a democratic society?
More urgently: How could anyone even consider giving leaders with such values a "Palestinians State" – or any state?
Killing is not only tolerated in the "moderate" Palestinian Authority, it is cultivated there by the leaders, the media, the teachers, soccer stadiums, and summer camps, day in day out. For years, the so-called "moderates" "condemn violence" one minute, and urge it the next, in the most high-pressured way on its government-controlled television, newspapers, textbooks, and even crossword puzzles – all thanks to the bighearted taxpayers of the United States and Europe [for an avalanche of all of this, see www.palwatch.org].
At Hudson.org, Mark Silverberg lays out the perverse flaws in the attitude towards Israel being taken by the US government and other western countries. Observing that the Obama administration constantly blames Israel for not making enough concessions while making no such demands of Mahmoud Abbas and his cronies, Silverberg notes that it is only Israel that has made concessions:
Recent unreciprocated concessions also include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's acceptance of Palestinian statehood, and the concept of two states for two peoples...Netanyahu temporarily prohibited Jewish construction on the West Bank; put a hold on Jewish construction in Jerusalem; prohibited Jewish building on the West Bank and Jerusalem following the end of his construction ban; curtailed IDF counter-terrorism operations on the West Bank; looked the other way on illegal Arab construction in Jerusalem; allowed the deployment of a US-trained Palestinian army on the West Bank knowing the day may come when they might turn their weapons on Israelis; removed over 400 security checkpoints on the West Bank to facilitate Palestinian travel; and eased the Israeli embargo on Gaza despite Hamas's outspoken goal of exterminating Israel; the 2005 Gaza withdrawal that quickly led to a Hamas-controlled terrorist enclave on Israel’s southern border that continues to fire missiles into Israel’s civilian population centers; and a complete withdrawal from Southern Lebanon, which now has more increasingly accurate and farther-reaching Hizballah weaponry pointed at Israel than ever before.
...If the Palestinians and Arab and Muslim countries are always given a pass for bad behavior -- and often even rewarded for it -- why should they ever make peace?
I believe this is perhaps the most important point of all. In my view, the single most important reason for the continuation without end of the Middle East conflict is that the west has continuously rewarded the Arab aggressors – and if aggressors are rewarded, the inevitable result is they merely ratchet up their aggression.
From the very beginning of the conflict in the 1920s, Britain’s response to Arab terror against the Jews was to reward the perpetrators by offering them part of the internationally binding legal entitlement of their victims. That pattern continues to this day.
In order to arrive at a solution, you must first correctly identify the problem. The problem here is not that there is no state of Palestine. The problem is that Arab aggressors want to destroy the State of Israel.
The solution is to make them stop doing so. That can only happen when the west stops rewarding the attackers and punishing their victims, and starts treating the aggressors instead as pariahs.
The solution to the Middle East conflict therefore does not depend upon the establishment of a state of Palestine. It depends instead on whether the west stops rewarding genocidal aggression.
Why doesn’t Israel say so, loudly and publicly? Why is it so afraid to stand up for its own cause of truth, law and justice?

I visited Hevron in November 2000 after the outbreak of the Rosh Hashanah War to see what could be done to assist in the face of the growing daily attacks on the community. After returning to work for the community in the summer of 2001, a bond and a love was forged that grows to this day. My wife Melody and I merited to be married at Ma'arat HaMachpela and now host visitors from throughout the world every Shabbat as well as during the week. Our goal, "Time to come Home!"
