Here is the price list for stone-throwing: three to seven months. If injured by stone-throwing, the "populist" terrorist will get between one year to 18 months, if the injuries aren't permanent. Get it? The murderer of the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion fighter could have been caught after an earlier stone-throwing – that didn't cause damage – and would have gotten a slap on the wrist which sends a negative message: try again until you succeed.

The stone-throwers' point of ambush was located between the high school and the local hospital. None of the Palestinian teachers or nurses and doctors at the time intervened. Quite the opposite, they watched in equanimity the youngsters surrounding the small car with two Jews, smashing the windows with sticks and heavy rocks, and attacking the Jews. Inside the car I was sitting with my wife, who was terrified from the sight of her husband bleeding from a heavy rock that hit his head. (This was already the third head injury from terror, so the concern was even greater.) The dilemma was whether to get out of the car and try and escape until my wife spotted an opening in the traffic jam to the emergency room.

This event didn't take place in a remote village, but rather in a busy area – the Mount of Olives, where my parents are buried. It showed the unbearable ease in which Jews are attacked on roads as part of what is called "stone terrorism". What causes this unbearable ease in which stone-throwing happens on a daily basis? It is a forgiving attitude, that can be seen in the sugarcoated term "populist terror," which we on the Israeli side have also adopted. Including both the legal system, and the security/police system.

And that's how stone throwers, who just left a school belonging to the Ministry of Education, after an intelligence effort was implemented to catch them after they were involved in yet another stoning ambush, are released because a judge did not allow more than 48 hours of interrogation. And that's how the youngsters learn that attacking Jews, citizens, and fighters, can continue. The interrogation officer said he had to let one of the parents be present during the questioning since he was a minor, who told him to stay silent. And even if they had confessed and gone to trial, the punishment would have been in accordance.

Another Israeli has been murdered, after having been struck in the head by what Ha’aretz described as a “heavy brick.”

For years, major American news media outlets have portrayed Palestinian rock-throwers as “peaceful” protesters, even when they throw rocks and bricks. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman infamously once included rock-throwing in his list of types of “non-violent resistance” that he hopes Palestinians will carry out. Well, I guess Friedman got his wish.

On May 24, an Israeli counter-terror unit entered the al-Amari refugee camp near Ramallah in pursuit of fugitive terrorists. Apparently, the absurdly large Palestinian Authority security forces, which are headquartered in Ramallah, had no interest in arresting the terrorists, so the Israelis had to enter P.A.-occupied territory to do the job that the P.A. promised to do in the Oslo Accords.

For years, groups like J Street and Peace Now have been telling us that ordinary Palestinian Arabs are just like ordinary Americans—they’re moderate, peace-seeking, opponents of terrorism.

Not quite.

BTW, Need Proof Israel Should Punish Parents When Kids Throw Stones? - by Sheri Oz

...This 7-year-old child’s father very clearly taught him not to throw stones at Arab owned cars. And by the absence of parental punishment when he threw stones at an Israeli bus — only the Jew (probably a Jew), who did not know where he lived, was angry at him — he learned that it is quite okay (perhaps even desirable?) to stone Israelis. Who should be punished, then, when kids throw stones at Israelis? Perhaps the only rehabilitation available to minors in such a situation is to punish their parents. And to punish them in a meaningful way. In a way that will overcome any desire they may have for the rewards of having raised a Palestinian Arab child who becomes a shaheed.

I found that proof while researching an article on a different topic. Let me first provide some background to the question and then tell you what I found.

Over the past decade, Israel has been wrestling with the question regarding how to best respond when children under the age of criminal responsibility (age 12) throw stones at Israeli targets. In 2010, for example, the Knesset Committee for Rights of the Child held a session examining just that. For some reason, police participants seemed to think parents were trying to restrain their children and blamed older children or other adults for inciting kids and expressed the desire to work with parents to curtail stone throwing on the part of minors. (Pardon me as I give myself a moment to recover from my shock at this magnanimity.)

In September this year, the High Court of Justice heard arguments concerning a law proposed in 2015 that would rescind National Insurance child allowances to parents whose children are found guilty of stone throwing. The question facing the court concerns the legality or illegality of such a move. The question I ask concerns whether or not that is punishment enough.

There’s one very important difference between Palestinian rock-throwers and the Michigan rock-throwers - by Stephen M. Flatow

If the Michigan teenagers are convicted, they will not be rewarded by the U.S. government in any way. American taxpayers would never stand for it. Two Israelis who happened to be driving through a Palestinian town were nearly murdered by a group of teenagers last week. Meanwhile, in eastern Michigan, another group of teenagers succeeded in murdering a driver who happened to be passing by.

Though separated by 6,000 miles, the attackers had one thing in common—their choice of weapon. They both used rocks.

The Israeli victims were two women—elderly, if one may judge by the photos—who were visiting the Palestinian Authority town of Azzun. They were members of an extreme left-wing group called “Machsom (Security Checkpoint) Watch.” They contend that the checkpoints where Palestinians are checked for bombs and guns before entering Israel constitute “the denial of Palestinians’ rights to move freely in their land.”

I don’t have much sympathy for Machsom Watch. After Palestinian terrorists butchered five Israelis—including three small children—in Itamar in 2011, Machsom Watch activists, including the organization’s spokesperson, Raya Aaron, visited the Arab village of Awarta to comfort the relatives of the killers. That says a lot about where Machsom Watch’s sympathies lie.

NYT, J Street and Rewards for Rock-Throwers - by Stephen M. Flatow

...An editorial in The Washington Post at the time correctly asked, “What’s the difference between assault with a deadly weapon—a shooting—and assault with rocks that hit cars at potentially lethal speeds?” That’s a question that J Street and the folks at The New York Times should consider, too. On a recent Friday, several-dozen Jewish hikers happened to pass near the Palestinian village of Kobar. Some locals reacted to the sight of Jews by trying to stone them to death. News reports noted that Kobar is the home town of the terrorist who recently stabbed three Jews to death at their dinner table in the town of Halamish.

On Aug. 12, Palestinians attending a funeral of a dead terrorist decided they would try to complete his life’s mission by murdering some Jews themselves. They gathered on the road near the Israeli town of Tekoa and began blocking oncoming traffic.

Arab drivers were stopped to see if they had Jewish passengers. If not, they were allowed to pass. Jewish drivers were assaulted with huge rocks and other objects. In the footage of the incident that was broadcast on Israel’s Channel 2, you can see some of the attackers were armed with cinder blocks—those extremely heavy two foot-by-one foot blocks used for the construction of walls and the like.

On Aug. 13, an Israeli bus passing near the town of Karmei Tzur was ambushed by Palestinian rock-throwers. A 1-year-old Jewish baby was injured. Apparently she was guilty of being an “illegal baby settler.”

Three days, three attempts to execute Jews by stoning, an old tradition in the Middle East. At least 13 Israeli Jews, and two Arabs mistaken for Jews, have been murdered by Palestinian rock-throwers since the 1980s. Scores of others have been injured.

Palestinian Arabs who throw rocks at Jews know they can expect to be richly rewarded for their deeds.

When is the throwing of boulders "non-violent"?

When a Palestinian throws them, of course. Just ask Thomas Friedman of the New York Times.

The Palestinian attackers first spilled oil across the highway, hoping to cause cars to slide and crash.

A few years ago, Friedman included rock-throwing in his list of types of "non-violent resistance" that he hopes Palestinians will carry out. This week, on the highway known as Route 443, some Palestinians decided to throw some of those "non-violent" rocks, including some particularly large ones.

According to Israel Hayom, two passengers in an Israeli automobile were injured when "boulders smashed into the windows of their vehicle." Before throwing the boulders, the Palestinian attackers first spilled oil across the highway, hoping to cause cars to slide and crash.

Despite attempts by advocates of the Palestinian cause to depict rock-throwers as children engaged in schoolyard hijinks, the truth is that these rock-terrorists are more sophisticated than one might imagine--sophisticated, that is, in the art of murdering and maiming Jews.

Last year, when they targeted an Israeli school bus in Jerusalem, they attacked from two sides with different weapons: one hurled rocks at the windows, while the other threw bags of black paint at the front windshield, hoping to blind the drive and cause the bus to crash.

They also long ago figured out that a rock can cause a lot more damage if thrown at an automobile moving at high speed. In fact, that's how one Palestinian rock-thrower died by his own hand--one of the rocks he threw at an Israeli car near the city of Emanuel in 2009 bounced back and hit him in the head at an extremely high velocity, because of the speed of the automobile.

Brits short memory of their own history when it comes to punishing terrorists - by Stephen M. Flatow

...Why in the world would the British government take such a special interest in Palestinian baby-killers? According to the British embassy in Tel Aviv, the issue is “of interest and concern to the British public.” I find that difficult to believe. I doubt the average Englishman has even heard of the Hares killers or Adele Biton.

The British government says Israel is being too harsh in giving prison sentences of 15 years each to five Palestinians who murdered a Jewish toddler. Yet when the British had to deal with Palestinian terrorists, they themselves were a lot harsher.

The current controversy has to do with five Palestinian Arab teenagers from the village of Hares who ambushed an Israeli automobile near Ariel in March 2013.

Of course, Palestinians ambush Israeli traffic all the time. They throw rocks, they hurl firebombs, and they shoot rifles at Israeli motorists who are guilty of what we might call “driving while Jewish.” Very few of these attacks are reported in the American news media.

Except on the occasion when they are particularly “successful.” As in the March 2013 attack, when the ambushers caused the Biton family’s car to crash. Their 4-year-old daughter, Adele, was paralyzed and suffered additional injuries. After two years of countless surgeries and suffering, she died as a result of complications from the injuries.

The Palestinian killers should have been tried for murder. But the Israeli prosecutors in this case offered them a plea bargain of 15 years. The killers accepted what has to be one of the most lenient punishments on record for murdering a child.

Yet that wasn’t lenient enough for the British government. Last November, a British diplomat in Israel took the extraordinary step of personally confronting the Israeli prosecutor to “raise our concerns” about the punishment that the killers might receive.

After the murderers recently received the agreed-upon 15-year terms, the British government again expressed its “concern” about what it called “Israel’s child detention policy.” The British don’t seem too concerned about the Palestinians’ child-murder policy. For some reason, their interest is limited to the welfare of the killers, whom they dub “children” because they happen to have been 16 and 17 at the time of the attack.

Unfortunately, Reuters Doesn’t Meet “Mandatory Minimum” of Accountability Unlike The Atlantic

...Atlantic editors were responsive to public concerns and looked into the matter, showing their commitment to the journalistic guideline calling for accountability. And after their investigation, they promptly amended the erroneous language, per ethical guidelines requiring accuracy....Reuters, unfortunately, did not show such a commitment to accountability and accuracy.

After Israel enacted harsher penalties for those convicted of stone-throwing and similar nationalistic attacks last September, an article in The Atlantic described the new measures as imposing "a minimum four-year prison term for Palestinians who throw rocks and Molotov cocktails."

As an Israeli law, though, it applies to all Israeli citizens and residents, whether Jewish or Arab, while Palestinians rock throwers in the West Bank are more likely to be prosecuted under military regulations.

The Atlantic's inaccurate statement may have been the influence of a Reuters piece cited in that same story. Reuters, too, described the penalty as being imposed "on Palestinian" attackers:

Israel will impose a minimum four-year jail term on Palestinian petrol bombers and rock throwers and will ease open-fire regulations and impose harsher fines, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday.

But in his remarks that Thursday, Netanyahu was very specific: The law, he explained, would apply to "all citizens and residents of Israel." Reuters was flatly wrong about what "Netanyahu said." And it was wrong in its headline, "Israel tightens crackdown on Palestinian petrol bomb, stone-throwers."

The errors by The Atlantic and Reuters were virtually the same. But the way the two media outlets responded to calls for corrections this week couldn't be more different.

A highly accessible murder weapon

...Hurling boulders at Jews' heads can no longer be considered a mischievous act. Not after Adele Biton, Asher Palmer and his baby son Yonatan, Alexander Levlovich, and the other 10 Israelis killed by the "metaphor for resistance." The sad, weakening solutions of setting up concrete barricades and donning shields and bulletproof vests cannot be the only defenses of those who are determined to be sovereign in their own country. The Zionist movement built cities and factories, schools and hospitals out of these stones. But there are people with hearts of stone who want to use them to build graves for the next victims.

The murder weapon aimed at me doesn't require its wielder to have a license, pass an exam, or go to a shooting range every three years. Plenty of it is lying around on the hills and slopes we drive through. It needs only a clenched fist and a simple muscle movement -- and a mother and baby can be murdered in a manner that redefines "accessible." Murder at one's fingertips.

I don't know when historians will determine that the Third Intifada has broken out. For us, the residents of Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, it's been around at least since Operation Pillar of Defense nearly three years ago. At the time, my husband and I were coming back from the hospital with a new baby. While driving home, I kept turning off the car's air conditioner and covering him up so he wouldn't be cold, then worrying he didn't have enough air, uncovering him, and turning the air conditioner back on. I asked Eyal to take the turns slowly so he wouldn't get carsick. Worrying because of his jaundice, and because we needed to go back to the hospital the next day for tests. And how the other children at home would take to him. And if the motions he was making with his mouth meant that he was starting to get hungry right then, in the middle of the trip. Anat, my neighbor, was right behind us. A Molotov cocktail hit her car, right at the turn where I was afraid the baby would get nauseous.

Stones, rocks, blocks and boulders all kill

...Stoning attacks claimed many more lives over the years and they are ongoing and rampant....Evidently, none of this perturbs Arab MKs who stridently incite against the state that bankrolls them and guarantees their rights to subvert it. They’d do well, however, to recall that sometimes stones injure and kill Israeli Arabs too – when they’re mistaken for Jews.

Since last Monday, hurling stones at passing vehicles is deemed by law to constitute a terrorist act that could get perpetrators long prison stretches.

This follows Knesset ratification of more stringent sentencing guidelines for attacks on civilian traffic. This legislation allows the prosecution to demand a 10-year term without having to prove intent to harm.

In the event that such intent is proven, sentences can be doubled to 20 years.

The law – passed by a majority of 69 (including many opposition MKs) to 17 (mostly from the Joint (Arab) List) – amends legislation in which sentence-severity hinged on proof of intent. This resulted in attackers frequently getting off with slaps on the wrist or altogether scot-free.

The ensuing legal anomaly led MK Tzipi Livni – when she served as justice minister in the previous government – to push for clearer legislation. Livni formulated the amendment that only now passed its final parliamentary hurdles – under the aegis of Livni’s successor, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked.

Shaked declared: “Leniency toward terrorists stops today. A stone-thrower is a terrorist and only appropriate punishment can serve as deterrence.”

The Kids Who Try to Kill With Rocks, and the Media That Ignores Them

...Some Americans—Thomas Friedman of the New York Times comes to mind—seem to have trouble recognizing that rocks can kill. But Arab terrorists and their Israeli victims understand that fact very well. The terrorists know it—that’s why they do it. And the Israelis know it because they have to bury the victims.

JNS.org – My eye was drawn this week to one of those little news items that appear in the Israeli media, but never make it into the American press. I call them the near-misses: the bomb that was discovered just before it went off, the bullet that struck just inches from its intended target. No casualties? That apparently dictates that the news is not fit to print.

This time it was a shower of rocks that were hurled at an Israeli automobile on the afternoon of May 8. Chen Borochov made the mistake of driving through an Arab neighborhood of Jerusalem known as A-Tur. He wasn’t provoking anybody. He was just driving home. His crime was that the color of his license plate identified him as an Israeli.

And that was enough for Borochov’s assailants to launch a violent ambush. One of the huge rocks smashed through the right side of his car’s front windshield. “If someone had been [sitting] next to me, he would have certainly died or remained a vegetable for the rest of his lifetime,” Borochov later remarked.

Some Americans—Thomas Friedman of the New York Times comes to mind—seem to have trouble recognizing that rocks can kill. But Arab terrorists and their Israeli victims understand that fact very well. The terrorists know it—that’s why they do it. And the Israelis know it because they have to bury the victims. At least 14 Israelis have been murdered by Arab rock-throwers since the 1980s.

The Arabs who attacked Borochov’s car weren’t trying to scratch or dent it. They were trying to stone him to death, the same way killers in the Middle East have been executing their victims for innumerable centuries.

But what drew my eye to this news report in particular was Borochov’s description of the attackers. He saw them clearly; they were just a few feet from his car, and it was broad daylight. They were, he said, “three 11 to 12 year-old children, wearing school bags.”

...The UNICEF recommendation was based on the fact that minors are taken to police stations for interrogations, and if the family does not know a lawyer, or if that particular lawyer is not then available, the minors would not have representation at the interrogation since there is no public defender in Judea and Samaria. The Israeli authorities were enthusiastic about the UNICEF recommendation, and drew up a form in which lawyers and representatives of the aforementioned NGO’s could provide details about lawyers, their contact information, their geographic location, their area of practice, their fee information, and more. “They saw the form. They heard we are willing to take action,” the official said of Lasky, the NGOs and the other lawyers present. “It is six months later, and guess how many, including from the NGOs who attack on the subject, guess how many have given the names of lawyers? Zero.”

"Simply fictitious," responded a senior Israel Defense Forces official when asked about allegations leveled in a Feb. 10, 2014 Australia Broadcasting Corporation "Four Corners" report concerning brutal torture of Palestinian children during interrogations.

In contravention of journalistic codes of ethics, reporter John Lyons never gave Israeli officials the opportunity to respond specifically to the alleged instances of extreme abuse described. CAMERA, therefore, checked with Israeli authorities, reaching a high-level official intimately knowledgeable about the minors interviewed in the "Stone Cold Justice" broadcast.

One of them, Fathi Mahfouz, who was arrested on April 10, 2013 at the age of 15, and held for 82 days, claimed on camera that during his interrogation he had been hung from a cross-like structure for hours and beaten, and had been subjected to hitting and electric batons.

Another child, Qsai Zamara, alleged that his 18-day nightmare at the age of 14 included an interrogation in which he was whipped with a hose and threatened with electrocution.

About these two children, the IDF official stressed that they had never made these claims in court. Mahfouz appeared in court one day after his April 10 arrest, and he returned to court again on April 14 when he entered into a plea bargain, confessing to the crime for which he had been indicted, which was throwing rocks at military vehicles and personnel from a distance of 15 meters during a wide scale demonstration. During these two appearances, he never raised any allegations of being suspended from a cross or being beaten. "The only claim [of abuse] he made in court was on the 14th that the border policeman who arrested him in some way injured him and the court ordered that a protocol of a hearing be sent to the internal affairs office of the police, part of the Justice Ministry, for investigation."

"Never once did he make a claim regarding his interrogation at any stage," added the official, who confirmed that Mahfouz was represented by a lawyer in court.

Similarly, Zamara never voiced claims of torture during his court appearances. He was arrested on April 22, 2013, and brought to court the following day for a remand hearing in which he was represented by a lawyer. Three pages of arguments were made on the April 23 hearing, and "never once does he mention the terrible torture he [later said he] was subjected to." On April 25, he again appeared in court when his indictment was filed. Any alleged torture that took place during interrogations would have happened in this window of time, and yet "never once had Zamara claimed that he had been so viciously attacked or tortured."

"It's unbelievable that now, 10 months afterwards, he's making these amazing claims of what happened to him," stated the incredulous official.

...That we have this video is due to the fact "Palestinian boys throwing things" take pride in their actions, not of course in "throwing stones at tanks" but at young mothers with their infants secured in car-seats. As one may reasonably assume, neither CPT nor their kindred spirits will stand between the rock-throwers and their designated victims.

This group while operating under a proclaimed public banner of  Christian non-violence, provides quite often both cover and excuse for activities, that far from being non-violent, bring both life-threatening injury, and potentially death, both to the victims of those attackers tacitly encouraged by those who "understand why throwing stones feels good", as well as the perpetrators of the attacks. Kathleen's piece pretty much speaks for itself, and the average reader with little assistance should understand what CPTs contribution has been in deepening the conflict, the blood shed and injuries incurred to all sides concerned through their encouragement.

While there are any number of examples that can be used, the stoning of Zehava Weiss and her children by the local "Palestinian boys throwing things" of Beit Ummar, just north of Hebron on Rt. 60, two years ago, really says it all and is part of the daily life of fathers, mothers and children, trying to arrive at their destinations safely. That we have this video is due to the fact that "Palestinian boys throwing things" take pride in their actions, not of course in "throwing stones at tanks" but at young mothers with their infants secured in car-seats. As one may reasonably assume, neither CPT nor their kindred spirits will stand between the rock-throwers and their designated victims.

Years ago in our Hebron apartment, we had a foam cushion insert on which someone had drawn a smiling face. Dubbed “Happy Foam Square,” we would throw it at a wall when our work got frustrating, and doing so was surprisingly cathartic.

So in a small way, I understand why throwing stones feels good. I also understand, when I see the posters of small boys throwing stones at tanks, that their actions are brave. I understand why the narrative of an occupied people resisting one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world with rocks and Molotov cocktails is a source of pride in some circles.

But monitoring clashes in Hebron has always been one of my least favorite things to do, because we have almost no impact on the situation, so little strategy is involved on the part of the Palestinian boys throwing things, and because the consequences for them can be dire.

(The insertion of this video into the middle of Kathleen's article is my one interjection in the article itself. Y.)

On July 12, 2013 major elements of the Western and Arabic "news" media engaged in a campaign to elicit sympathy for a 5-year-old Palestinian boy, Wadi'a Maswadah, whom they claimed was "arrested" or "illegally detained" by the Israeli military. The furor began after videos were posted by an anti-Israel "human rights" group, that depict the boy erupting in a crying tantrum, amidst heavily-armed Israeli soldiers.



In reality, the boy was caught throwing rocks at passing Jewish cars, the Israeli soldiers stopped him, brought him to his home, waited for his father, then delivered them to the Palestinian Authority police.

What these "news" entities and "human rights" group did not present, however, is the names and stories of any of the Jews who have been maimed and killed as a result of Palestinian rock-throwing — including 3-year-old Adele Biton, who was left with traumatic brain injury just four months earlier.

A long-standing Arab-Muslim tradition, they love to throw rocks at Jews

Israel is, nevertheless, the dhimmi that got away and they should make it very clear to the progeny of their former masters that this sort of behavior will no longer be tolerated. It may very well be a long-standing Arab-Muslim tradition, but the Jews of the Middle East are under no obligation to honor that tradition.

Some 14 people sustained light injuries Thursday as a result of stones hurled near the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City.

The wounded, who were on a bus traveling in the city as the stones hit the vehicle, were injured by the stones and broken glass.

The majority of the injured are members of the same family – parents and their ten children, aged one to 19 years old. A father and son who were also on the bus were injured.

Arab teenagers and children have been throwing rocks at Jews for 14 centuries.

None of this is new and it is not a matter of "resistance," as progressive-left activists would tell you, but is a very long-standing Arab-Muslim racist hobby against the Jewish minority in that part of the world.

Is the idea to stand around until the Arabs get tired of throwing rocks etc. under the protection of lightweight protective gear and individual riot shields or is it to exploit the lightweight protective gear to facilitate detaining Arabs who engage in violence?

What's wrong with standing around until the Arabs get tired?

#1. Will they get tired or escalate?
#2. What happens to third parties who happen to be passing by the area and don't have the protective gear?

In any case, the equipment is a welcome development for a number of reasons:

#1. It is an expression of the commitment of the IDF to the safety of the soldiers.
#2. Reducing the danger to the soldiers in an incident provides the commanders much more latitude in handling the incident. ]

I delayed reading Amira Hass’s article in Haaretz, The inner syntax of Palestinian stone-throwing, because I knew that it would put me in pain.

Amira Hass tells us that throwing stones is the birthright and duty of anyone subject to foreign rule. She writes that for the Palestinians, “throwing stones is an action as well as a metaphor of resistance.”

A trope describing my son’s murder.

According to Hass, my son Koby’s murder by stones is not only an act but a metaphor. Koby’s teenage body was bludgeoned to death. Was that a simile or a metaphor? Was a beating with stones like cruelty? Or was it cruelty? Are you, Amira, condoning his murder? Or is it like you are condoning his murder?

Perhaps Asher Palmer and his son Jonathan were killed because of a synechdoche, the rock as a symbol of a whole people’s arm, Palestinian rage?

And the child who is still in the hospital because his mother’s car was in an accident because Arabs threw stones – an act of resistance?

My son and his friend Yosef, a 13 and 14 year old boy stoned to death. Resistance to their school books, their salami sandwiches, their math homework.

Harriet Sherwood, Jerusalem correspondent of the notoriously anti-Israel Guardian, frequently features on the Guardian-monitoring website CiF Watch, and with good reason. The Melbourne Age, one of the worst offenders in Australia as far as bias against Israel is concerned, recently published an article of hers entitled "No Stone Left Unpunished".

Emily Gian, Israel Advocacy Analyst at the Zionist Council of Victoria and a doctoral candidate in Israeli literature at the University of Melbourne, has issued a riposte, carried in the latest J-Wire:

Writes Emily Gian:

'An article appeared in last Thursday’s Melbourne Age entitled "No stone left unpunished". Penned by Harriet Sherwood of The Guardian, it told the story of Palestinian children detained by Israeli authorities for committing crimes such as "throwing stones at soldiers or settlers… flinging petrol bombs… [or] more serious offenses such as links to militant organisations or using weapons".

I couldn’t help but sense from the way Sherwood dismissed such activities as stone throwing and flinging petrol bombs as not being serious, that the writer was preparing to unleash what is now becoming stock standard fare from this publication on matters relating to Israel. Plenty of one-sided accusations without context and a token response from the Israeli side usually derided or sneered at by the author in the next paragraph or somewhere further down the line.

In its original incarnation in the Guardian, it was a termed a “special report” but, to its credit, the Age avoided the embarrassment and described it more correctly as an “opinion piece”. Perhaps “propaganda” might have even been more apt.

Two of the constants in this part of the world are (a) the phenomenon of Palestinian Arab men - some young, but not all - hurling rocks at fast-moving Israeli cars; and (b) the wilful but completely dishonest minimization of the deadly threat posed by such attacks. Here's the latest illustration of why this double-headed problem is so serious.

What seemed on Friday to be a routine car accident now turns out to have been an attack by terrorists in the vicinity of the Jewish community of Kiryat Arba. [Source]. The Jerusalem Post reports this evening that police now believe that rock throwing was the cause of the car accident that killed Hillel Palmer, 25, and his one-year-old son Jonathan on Friday. At a court hearing today, counsel for the police said that it now appears the car veered off the road after a rock shattered its windshield. "The police said that the front window was shattered, and a large rock was found inside the car with Palmer's blood on it. People close to the victims claimed that the police quickly determined it as a car accident in order not to inflame the region."

A young man and his baby son are dead and a family is forever shattered.

It's possible the perpetrators drew inspiration from a highly publicized ambush by masked rock-throwing children of an Israeli in Jerusalem's suburbs last October. You might remember the incident (see video below): the Arab media and especially Al Jazeera presented what happened in their customary Daoud vs Goliath fashion: "innocent" and "meek" Arab schoolboys, armed only with loincloths and slingshots callously run down by aggressive Israeli in his armored Zionist vehicle. The presence of a phalanx of cameramen, clearly positioning themselves at that location because of the expectation that there would be some highly photogenic violence is completely absent from the anti-Israel reporting. Likewise the cynical abuse of Palestinian Arab children by their adults (Arabs) who are at the scene.



Throwing rocks at moving cars is an act of terrorism. Terrorism means the deliberate inflicting of violence on civilians in order to intimidate a population - to paraphrase the United Nations General Assembly's draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. That's a convention that is highly unlikely ever to be enacted, by the way, given the perpetual opposition to it from the UN's most powerful lobby, the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

Throwing rocks is as deadly as firing a rifle or throwing a grenade. The people who routinely portray rock throwing Palestinian Arabs as liberation warriors in training know this. That's why despicable is too mild a word for scurrilous advocacy/reportage pieces like "Throwing rocks at the occupation – and Western prejudice too" [Electronic Intifada] and "Forget rock-throwing teens. Growing peaceful Palestinian resistance could tip the conflict" [Christian Science Monitor].

Like some other kinds of terrorists, rock throwing youths can seem like romantic figures - especially when portrayed that way by naive or activist editors - right up until the moment they bring tragedy into your own family or community.
