Nobody is denying the PLO senior official access to the world’s media outlets. But America is under no obligation to open its doors to those who endorse and consort with terrorists.

Hanan Ashrawi is a senior official of an organization that includes in its ranks those who are on the U.S. government list of terrorist groups. If that’s not sufficient grounds to deny her a visa to America, then what is?

Ashrawi is a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization. The PLO consists of groups that practice terrorism though are not on the U.S. list (for political reasons), such as Fatah; and groups that practice terrorism and are on the U.S. list, such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Founded in 1967, the PFLP is a Marxist gang that has carried out numerous terrorist attacks. It was a pioneer of airplane hijackings in the 1970s. It murdered 29-year-old Harold Rosenthal of Philadelphia—a member of the staff of U.S. Sen. Jacob Javits, Republican of New York (and a former member of the staff of Sen. Walter Mondale, Democrat of Minnesota)—in a grenade-and-machine gun attack on the El Al terminal at the Istanbul airport on Aug. 11, 1976.

The PFLP’s bloody rap sheet also includes the murder of an Israeli cabinet minister and the butchering of American rabbis (and an Israeli Druze policeman) in a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood.

It’s no surprise that Ashrawi is comfortable helping run an organization that includes the PFLP. After all, she has on many occasions publicly endorsed terrorism.

Does Hanan Ashrawi actually think Nikki Haley is unmarried? - by Elder of Ziyon

...After decades of being able to attack Israel with no opposition, the PLO has no idea how to handle someone who actually shows that the emperor has no clothes. So Ashrawi and the PLO go back to their old habits of insult - hoping that people still care about their perspectives. And the amount of people in the world who care is diminishing quickly.

Yesterday, Hanan Ashrawi launched a hilarious attack on US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley for being too pro-Israel.

Her full statement is revealing on many levels. It shows that anyone who calls out the obvious anti-Israel bias in the UN is absolutely frightening to the PLO.

...Peres’s problem wasn’t so much the skepticism of the Israeli people about Oslo—which understandably increased once they realized they were trading land for terror, not peace—but the fact that there was no moral equivalent to him on the other side. He was fond of saying, you make peace with your enemies, not your friends. What was needed for this formula to work, however, was a former enemy who shares the fantasy of a Middle East in which the century-old war against Zionism is consigned to the dustbin of history. There was no such person on the Palestinian side in the aftermath of Oslo. Nor is there one now.

A week after Shimon Peres was buried, the tributes for the last of Israel’s founders have ceased, but the vitriol from the Arab world continues. Rather than praise the man who worked harder than any Israeli for coexistence and the creation of a Palestinian state, the Arab and Muslim world still only sees Peres as a Jew and an Israeli, which is to say an enemy to be destroyed no matter what he did or didn’t do. Even those Palestinians who took part in the Oslo peace process that he sponsored are blasting him as a Zionist who didn’t really want peace. Much of this invective is just the sort of typical anti-Semitic slander that has been slung at Israel for several decades. But what’s significant about the groupspeak his death has generated is not that it shows resistance to peacemaking but that it is tied to a revisionist history of the last 25 years that demonstrates why Peres’s Oslo gambit was doomed to fail.

A lot of the attacks on Peres were related to the decision of Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to attend the funeral. Abbas was lavishly praised for this by President Obama and much of the West, but he was panned by Palestinians. The problem here is that Abbas’s typical double game in which he speaks one way in English to the West and another in Arabic to his own people was exposed by his presence at the funeral.

Though Abbas was smart to seek Obama’s favor in advance of the next push for an independence resolution at the United Nations, Palestinians viewed the effort as contradicting the nonstop drumbeat of incitement to hatred against Israel and Jews that flows from the official PA media. While Abbas is still interested in being viewed as a peacemaker abroad, he has done nothing to create a constituency for peace at home. The need to compete for popularity with the Islamists of Hamas has actually decreased the already negligible backing for an end to the conflict.

Elsewhere, the problem goes deeper than Abbas’s double dealing. It is to some extent understandable that opponents of Israel see Peres primarily in the context of his work in helping to defend Israel against those who wished to destroy it in his first decades of public life. Israel’s survival against the odds is something for which they do not forgive him or the Jewish state. That he is accused of atrocities such as the shelling of a Lebanese village in an area where terrorists were shooting at Israel is also not surprising, but the hypocrisy of such charges is lost on those making them.

More important than any of that is the impulse on the part of Palestinians and their cheerleaders to chart a revisionist history of Oslo and the peace process. According to Peres’s detractors, like former PA official Hanan Ashrawi, who penned an attack published Monday in the New York Times, the Israeli’s efforts for peace were fraudulent. In her version of the events of the last two decades, Peres was part of an Israeli effort to deny Palestinian rights and choke off their demands for statehood and sovereignty.

...Like any op-ed author, Hanan Ashrawi is entitled to her opinion, but a publisher like the New York Times has an ethical obligation to push back when any article distorts facts, even in an op-ed. In this particular case, Ashrawi has the special distinction of violating not only historical facts, but even the laws of space, time and physics.

The writer of an opinion piece or editorial is entitled to express personal opinions, but in the words of the famous senator, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”

In her op-ed in the New York Times, Palestinian lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi trashes the memory of Shimon Peres, which seems more than a little absurd at time when almost the entire world is commemorating his legacy as a visionary and peacemaker. Yet Ashrawi is entitled to her opinion, as out of touch as it may be. The problem is that she also distorts the facts, and that’s not a matter of opinion.

The point of Ashrawi’s op-ed is quite simply this: the blame for the collapse of the Oslo peace process, for the Second Intifada, for Palestinian terror in general, and for the thousands of Israelis who died, and continue to die as a result, lies solely with Israel.

EU chief to combat antisemitism meets with Exhibit A

...So, yes, the EU's official in charge of fighting antisemitism decided that it would be useful to get the perspective of someone whose organization has been responsible for spreading antisemitism.

The EU coordinator on combating anti-Semitism, Katharina von Schnurbein, met with one of the leading purveyors of antisemitism in the PLO, Hanan Ashrawi, where she was told that Israeli Jews are the real racists.

Yes, this really happened.

One day after a meeting in the Knesset where von Schnurbein said that she recognized that anti-Semitism often lies behind anti-Zionism, she met with Exhibit A.

Why Don’t They Want to Be Alone with Livni?

...The Palestinian fear of being trapped in a room with the people they are supposed to be crafting a deal with has nothing to do with fear of Israeli power. It’s all about the fact that the last thing they want is to actually reach an agreement they’d have to justify to a Palestinian people that is still not ready to accept a Jewish state no matter its borders are drawn.

There’s supposed to be a news blackout from the reconvened Middle East peace talks going on this week. The Palestinians insisted on that lest their reluctant negotiators be branded as doing something that smacked of legitimizing the Jewish state. But one of their team broke their silence this week in order to complain about the fact that they have been called upon to actually talk one on one with their Israeli counterparts:

“We had an agreement on three-way negotiations. The Americans from the beginning were supposed to be there. I don’t see why the Israelis don’t want the Americans there, as witnesses,” Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the PLO Executive Committee, told The Times of Israel. “These are not two-way negotiations,” she added.

This would seem to be violation of their undertaking to keep quiet about the talks but Ashrawi had an explanation:

“I’m not discussing the details or the facts,” she said. “I’m just telling you it’s the Israelis who don’t want the Americans, even though the Americans are totally biased in favor of Israel.”

Asked why she believed the Israelis would request the removal of a party favorable to them, Ashrawi said “they feel they can exploit their power over the Palestinians.”

In saying this, Ashrawi couldn’t have told us more about the negotiations had she produced a transcript. Nor could she have given us a better indication of just how dim the chances of success for this effort are. Palestinian Legislative Council member Hanan Ashrawi, a fluent English speaker with a high news media profile, is a veteran anti-Israel propagandist who habitually shades when she does not shred the truth (see, e.g., here and here).

Ashrawi appeared on Christiane Amanpour's July 23 CNN International show on TV to discuss the position of President Mahmoud Abbas's Palestinian Authority in negotiations soon to take place. An Israeli spokesperson, Tzipi Livni, Israeli minister responsible for negotiating with the PA had appeared with Amanpour the day before. Transcripts for the appearances of Ashrawi and Livni are available.

Livni’s strongest remark involving Palestinian Arabs was still mild: “The whole idea is to build trust and confidence and not to enter into this blame game that we used to have in the last years.” But Ashrawi, characteristically bending truth into the great Palestinian pretzel, wasn’t as diplomatic and non-combative, let alone accurate. Here’s a sampling:

Settlement activities are illegal. Annexing and stealing land which is not your own is illegal.

[…]

We have specific U.N. resolutions, particularly 194, dealing with the Palestinian refugees' right of return. We have the Arab initiative that, in a sense, places the whole issue of refugees in a regional context, which is important, because most of the Palestinian refugees are in neighboring Arab countries.

This is a source of instability. It's a source of tremendous pain throughout the region. And this needs to be resolved in a just and legal manner. So the Arab Peace Initiative talks about a just and agreed-upon solution to the Palestinian refugee question. We are not going to say we will start negotiations by violating international law, relinquishing the rights of the refugees. We have already given up 78 percent of historical Palestine, on which Israel was established. That is a major and painful compromise.

Miftah, the Western-funded NGO that refuses to condemn the medieval Jewish blood libel in Arabic, has another article filled with lies - this one about Jerusalem:

Looking at the state of Jerusalem’s eastern sector today, it is understandable why Israel would not want UNESCO or anyone else walking around the Old City, especially the Palestinian-populated parts of it. Because anyone who does, will see the devastation that Israel and its settlers have wreaked on one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the world.

Devastation? United Jerusalem today is more beautiful than at any time since 70 CE. So what is the devastation?

Excavation works are being conducted in and around the Aqsa Mosque to make way for more Jewish construction at the place where Waqf authorities say Ottoman and Abbasid artifacts have long been tucked away.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the subject knows that the Israel Antiquities Authority bends over backwards to save ancient artifacts - belonging to any religion. The Waqf, on the other hand, lies whenever it is convenient to do so, and has purposefully destroyed thousands of priceless ancient Jewish objects.

Condemning Jews acting responsibly to save antiquities while condoning Muslims destroying them is a bit of a double standard. There might be a term for that.

Blood libels, Hanan Ashrawi and the Miftah antisemitism story

On Thursday, I reported exclusively that Miftah, an NGO that was founded by Palestinian Arab media darling Hanan Ashrawi, had published as pure an anti-semitic screed as is imaginable - resurrecting the reprehensible blood libel that Jews ritually slaughter Christian children and consume their blood on Passover.

Miftah is an organization that is ostensibly dedicated to promoting Western, liberal idea like democracy and equal rights for women. At least, that's what they tell their donors, which in 2011 included Oxfam, the Anna Lindh Foundation, Norway, Ireland, UNESCO and the US-based National Endowment for Democracy:

Miftah presents itself as a transparent NGO dedicated to its ideals and principles.

Yet, within hours of my publicizing the disgusting article on its website, Miftah simply deleted it - no explanation, no apologies, no excuses. It simply pretended that the hugely offensive piece never existed, hoping that no one would notice their cover-up.

This is not how a transparent organization should act.

Here we see what happens when a supposedly liberal Arab organization is faced with the exposure of bigotry and hate in its midst: it sweeps it under the rug. And, so far, the NGOs that fund Miftah have been complicit in this silence, hoping that the controversy will go away.

And this is the problem.

While these same liberal organizations would be the first ones to complain when they see an example of anti-blackracism, Arab antisemitism is not regarded as nearly as toxic an issue. They know, as all observers of the Middle East know, that Arab antisemitism is endemic. It is the rule, not the exception.

As if the current cold spell isn't enough, Hanan Ashrawi insists on increased freezing:

PLO Executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi Monday [Dec. 31] said freezing settlement activities and ending the Israeli occupation are essential demands to achieve peace...during a meeting with an American delegation in the PLO headquarters in Ramallah...Ashrwai pointed out that approving the construction of thousands of settlement units and the demolition of and eviction from Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem aim at ethnically cleansing the indigenous people of the land, isolate Jerusalem from its surroundings and divide the West Bank.

I don't know what delegation that was, but she continued with others:

Ashrawi stressed in a meeting in Ramallah with EU representative to the West Bank, Gaza Strip and UNRWA, John Gatt-Rutter, “the importance of the European role in supporting the two-state solution and in bringing about an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine and Israel’s stepped-up illegal settlement campaign before it is too late.”...In addition, Ashrawi told a Canadian delegation representing the National Democratic Party...

For years, apologists for the terrorism-addicted Palestinian Arabs have pretended to become offended at the very suggestion that something might be lacking in the quality of their humanity. Statements of the much-celebrated Dr Hanan Ashrawi, "legislator, activist, and scholar" and "protégé and later colleague and close friend of Edward Said" [Wikipedia] come to mind.

Back in 2003, the rather divisive Ashrawi said of the then-current "intifada" that it would continue "in different shapes, different forms".

"We are not fond of mass suicide, but we want the right to resist occupation and injustice. Then the moment we say 'resist', the Israelis pull out the word 'terrorist' - so a child with a stone becomes the 'legitimate' target for Israeli sniper fire and a high-velocity bullet." [source]

As though to pre-empt another unfair attempt by Israelis to "to pull out the word 'terrorist'", the award-winning Dr Ashrawi famously declared that

"They're telling us we have no feelings for our children. We're not human beings, we're not parents, we're not mothers and fathers... Sometimes I don't want to sink to the level of responding, of proving I'm human. I mean, even animals have feelings for their children."

Dr Ashrawi's much-quoted (and never repudiated) statement first appeared in an interview she gave to Bob Simon of "60 Minutes". It was broadcast as part of an item called “Children on the Front Lines,” on Oct. 24, 2000 and quoted in "The Use of Palestinian Children in the Al-Aqsa Intifada" (Justus Reid Weiner/JCPA), published a week later on November 1, 2000. Though the original source is no longer online, it can be found online in this CBS article published in 2009. The intro says Dr Ashrawi had been "in the forefront of the peace movement for years" and that she considers the Israeli claims about allegations of parental inhumanity in Palestinian Arab society to be "the epitome of racism".

We assume Dr Ashrawi knows much, much more than we about racism. On the other hand, we know how to understand plain-speaking Palestinian Arab mothers when we see and hear them.

You know Israel is doing something right when it manages to put both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas on the PR defensive. And it evidently did exactly that with last week’s conference in New York to raise awareness of Jewish refugees from Arab lands.

Yesterday, Hamas lambasted the conference as a “dangerous, unprecedented move,” clearly outraged by anything that could undermine the false idea Palestinians have successfully implanted in the world’s consciousness for decades: that they are the only refugees, the only victims of the Arab-Israeli conflict; hence the world should grant them endless sympathy while treating Israel as the villain.

But Hamas’s pathetic attempt to rewrite history — it claimed the Jews “secretly migrated from Arab countries” before Israel’s 1948 War of Independence and were responsible for the Palestinians’ displacement during that war, whereas in truth, most arrived only after 1948, driven by persecution in their former homes – is far less interesting than the response of Hanan Ashrawi, a veteran PA legislator, member of the PLO’s executive committee and former minister, who once served as spokeswoman of the Palestinian negotiating team and currently functions as a PA envoy-at-large.

Recent Israeli efforts to counter the widespread ignorance about the plight of the Jewish refugees who were forced to abandon their ancient communities all over the Middle East since the late 1940s have been widely denounced in the Arab media.

According to a report in the Jerusalem Post, veteran Palestinian spokeswoman and high-ranking PLO member Hanan Ashrawi added her voice to the chorus of disapproval when she penned an article arguing that there was no such thing as Jewish refugees from Arab countries. A few days later, she propagated her views on this matter also in an English-language article published in the Huffington Post under the title “Israel’s Cynical Definition of ‘Refugee.’”

But if anyone is proposing cynical definitions, it is Ashrawi.

As David Harris rightly emphasized in a devastating response to Ashrawi’s article, the views she expresses are part of longstanding Arab and Palestinian efforts to rewrite and deny Jewish history, and ultimately, these efforts are a deplorable reflection of the unwillingness to accept Israel’s right to exist.

But it’s actually not just about Israel. One of the reactions to Ashrawi’s article is entitled “Hanan Ashrawi’s war on history,” and the author Daniel Mandel rightly notes that, according to Ashrawi’s “logic”, “the millions of Muslims who fled India and the millions of Hindus who fled Pakistan around the same time [i.e. in the late 1940s] were not refugees either, since each ended up in their respective nation states.”

Indeed, in the late 1940s, when some 800 000 Arabs fled the fighting initiated in their name to prevent or undo the establishment of Israel, there were many millions of refugees all over the world, particularly in Europe and in South Asia, where the partition of India created at least an estimated 12 million refugees.

From all these many millions of refugees, only the Arabs from Palestine became eternal refugees who, up to this day, insist on a hereditary refugee status that has swelled the ranks of the original 800 000 to about 5 million, who are served by UNRWA, the UN agency created exclusively for Palestinian refugees.

Hanan Ashrawi, the telegenic, kinder, gentler face of Palestinian politics, knows how to attract a headline, but one wonders if she is becoming reckless with the years. This week, she claimed that Jews who came to Israel from Arab countries were not refugees because they left their homes voluntarily.

This suggests Palestinians officials are alarmed at Israel’s intention to include an agenda item on compensation for Jewish refugees in any future peace negotiations bearing on Palestinian refugees.

In a recent article, Ashrawi asserted that the “claim that Jews who migrated to Israel, which is supposed to be their homeland, are ‘refugees’... is a form of deception and delusion.” With a touch of the casuistical, Ashrawi explained: “If Israel is their homeland, then they are not ‘refugees’; they are emigrants who returned either voluntarily or due to a political decision...Jews voluntarily and collectively left [Arab lands].”

THERE IS an element of the surreal to this, quite apart from its flat-earth factual quality. By Ashrawi’s logic, the millions of Muslims who fled India and the millions of Hindus who fled Pakistan around the same time were not refugees either, since each ended up in their respective nation states.

In fact, refugees are those who flee their homes with due cause, irrespective of whether or not they end up, as the bulk of Jews from Arab lands did, in their historic homeland. Moreover, the record shows that Arab states expelled, intimidated or ransomed their own Jewish communities during the 1940s and 1950s. It also shows that most of these Jews were on the receiving end of murderous violence months and even years before Israel came into existence. And unlike Palestinian refugees, the Jewish refugees had not fled a war zone or taken up arms.

Prominent PLO spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi is demanding that the international community declare Israel an "Apartheid State." Her demand was included in a statement she published in Ramallah this week: she accused Israel of incitement against Arabs and of violating international laws.

How come she never mentions the incitement of Palestinians against Israelis in the Palestinian government-issued textbooks, or in the schools and summer camps named after terrorists, or in the government-controlled TV stations which just last week again glorified terrorists with video celebrations again and again of the tenth aniversary of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group that over the years has ikilled dozens of Israelis, including many children?


How come Asrawi never mentions that in Saudi Arabia there is not only gender apartheid -- in which women have virtually no rights and are kept as virtual prisoners, unable to travel without the permission of a male guardian or relative, even if he is a child or retarded or mentally defective -- but also that there are separate roads marked for Muslims to drive on and for non-Muslims to drive on? You are not even allowed to bring a Bible nto the country. How come those acts are not "Apartheid"?


How come Ashrawi never mentions that here in Jordan the government has been trying to strip thousands of us Palestinans of our Jordanian citizenship -- a move Israel never made against its Christians and Muslims.

As an Arab Christian, Ashrawi would have done better if she had chosen to focus on the plight of her fellow Christians in the Palestinian territories, many of whom continue to complain about persecution and harassment from Muslims.

Has Ashrawi, the self-declared human right rights advocate, never heard of thousands of the Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip who try to infiltrate into Israel every morning in search of work and a better life?

Why has it become the dream of many Arab Christians and Muslims to emigrate to the "Apartheid State"? Is it possible that all these people are uninformed? Or do they really know the truth about Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East? In Egypt, Syria, and Iran, for example, government officials put journalists in jail, but Israel is the only country in the region where one small journalist nobody has ever heard of can put a government official in jail.

In the past few decades, many Christian families from Bethlehem and even the Gaza Strip have moved to live in Israel because they feel safer in the "Apartheid State" than they do among their Muslim "brothers".

Has Ashrawi ever asked herself how come dozens of Christians and Muslims from neighboring Arab countries and Africa try to infiltrate the border into Israel every day, or how come so many of her fellow Christians want to live in the "Apartheid State"?

Is Ashrawi aware of the fact that while Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered in the Arab world and Africa, the Jewish state remains the safest place for them to live? Is she aware that the Christian population in Israel is on the rise while in the Arab and Islamic world it is dwindling -- and even faster in places such as Nigeria, Egypt and the Sudan where Muslims are slaughtering Christians?

What has Ashrawi done to promote the rights of women and freedom of speech under Hamas and Fatah?

On the same day that she issued her appeal to the international community, a Palestinian court in the West Bank sentenced a man to only five years in prison for murdering his sister. And on the same day also, Palestinian policemen raided a university campus near Ramallah and threatened peaceful protesters and reporters.

Tens of thousands of Arabs and Muslims have put their lives at risk by crossing the border into Israel from Egypt, where border guards often open fire at women and children.

Does Hannan Ashrawi really care about Palestinians, or is she just being paid by Europeans and Western NGOs to keep bashing the region's only democratic country, which, though admittedly not perfect, still tries harder than any other to treat all of its people with decency and equality?

PMW Op-Ed challenges Hanan Ashrawi’s credibility

After PMW director Itamar Marcus's press conference in Washington with Congressmen Brad Sherman and Steve Rothman to release the PMW reportFrom Terrorists to Role Models, Palestinian Member of Parliament Hanan Ashrawi wrote an Op-Ed in the influential Washington newspaper, The Hill, to attempt to challenge Palestinian Media Watch and defend the Palestinian Authority. Itamar Marcus's response, documenting the current PA leaders' and Ashrawi's response to terror, was published yesterday in The Hill.

glorification of terror

In an attempt to distract Congress's attention from a new Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) report documenting the Palestinian Authority's terrorist glorification, Hanan Ashrawi rushed to publish an article in The Hill to malign PMW. More striking still, although Ashrawi's article was in response to PMW's new report released in Congress, she did not allot even one sentence to name, review or even criticize the report's content. Why is Ashrawi so anxious to keep the contents of the PMW report from Congressional review?

Possibly because the report, From Terrorists to Role Models: The Palestinian Authority's Institutionalization of Incitement, documents 100 examples of the Palestinian Authority policy of turning terrorist killers into heroes and role models - a practice as disturbing as it is indefensible.

The PMW report documents, for example, that the terrorist Dalal Mughrabi, who led a bus hijacking in which 37 civilians were murdered, has been immortalized through the repeated naming of sites and events after her, including two elementary schools, a kindergarten, a computer center, a summer camp, football tournaments, a public square and street, an adult education course, a university club, a dance troupe, a military unit, a dormitory in a youth center and more.

Significantly, this terror veneration is coming from the leadership of the Palestinian Authority. It was PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself who funded the computer center named after bus hijacker Mughrabi, and it was Prime Minister Salam Fayyad who sponsored a sporting event named after Abu Jihad, who planned and directed the bus hijacking. The message the PA leaders are disseminating could not be more problematic: We, the Palestinian President and Prime Minister, believe that murdering brothers 6-year-old Roi and 3-year-old Ilan Hochman and their mother Rebecca, along with 34 other civilians on a bus, was an act worthy of honor.

The Palestinians: Why Salam Fayyad Cannot Deliver

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad may be a good man with good intentions, but those who think that he will be able to persuade the Palestinians to make peace with Israel are deluding themselves.

In Palestinian culture, it is more important if one graduates from an Israeli prison than from the University of Texas at Austin. Fayyad never spent a day in an Israeli jail. Nor did he or any of his sons take an active role in the “struggle” against Israel.

The first question that people would ask Fayyad -- when and if he runs in a new election -- is, “What sacrifices did you make in the struggle against Israel?”

Palestinians will want to know if Fayyad has ever been detained or targeted in any other way by Israel. They would want to know if any of Fayyad’s sons had participated in demonstrations or attacks against Israel. This is why Palestinians who have sat in Israeli prisons for security offenses now hold senior positions in the Palestinian Authority.

Many Palestinians see Fayyad as someone who was “imposed” on them by Americans and Europeans and are willing to accept him as long as he is dealing only with the economy and infrastructure. But Fayyad, who appears to be more popular in Washington and London than in the Gaza Strip’s Jabalya refugee camp or Hebron in the West Bank, will never be able to sell a peace agreement with Israel to his people.
