THE HARAM HISTORICAL SKETCH The words al-Haram al-Sharif, which, can perhaps best be rendered by "The August Sanctuary", denotes the whole of the sacred enclosure which it is the- object of this Guide to describe. . The two principle edifices are the Dome of the Rock, on a raised platform in the middle, and Mosque of al-Aqsa against the south wall.The site is one of the oldest in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest (perhaps from pre-historic) times. Its identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute.
