Can you imagine living in exile? Knowing that, although you have lived all your life in one place, as have your parents and maybe even grandparents, you belong to a different land?

The Jewish people lived in exile for centuries. Their religion and traditions did not allow them to forget… Maybe, most of all, it was their neighbors who did not allow them to forget that they belonged to a different land.

Jews in exile yearned for Zion, “the sun-drenched land.” Its fruits became something almost mythological. If someone managed to bring them fruits of the Land, it was like receiving a small miracle, something rare and very precious.

Of course, fruits couldn’t stay fresh on such a long trip. Dates, for example, could be brought from the far away land to the people in exile. This is where the tradition of eating dried fruit on Tu B’shvat began.

Arson, Stupidity and the Lesson Not Yet Learned

...Those same Arabs who want to push us into the sea, but have not yet worked out how, seem to think that by setting fire to the country we will run for the sea, and be gone. But they are wrong, we will let the fires burn, our fires, the fires of rebuilding and the fires of caring. I am already planning the party when we make a chanukat bayit in our rebuilt home, and all the wonderful caring people who have given us the strength to get there are not only invited but expected to turn up.

Two things emerge from her harrowing yet inspiring text:

1. The Arab mindset is still stuck in the primitive barbarism of burning people alive – it is part of their culture, their heritage, their religion. In 2016.

2. The sheer stupidity of the arsonists and their supporters in Fatah, the PLO, Hamas and others. They STILL haven’t internalized that every time they try (and sometimes succeed) in destroying lives and property, the only – the ONLY – effect it has is to weld Jews and Israelis still more closely together.

You have to be particularly stupid – or a Fatah leader – not to understand this simple fact.

Nobody is going to believe me when I tell them that having to flee with our community in the middle of the night, close the door on our house, convinced I would never see the house again, and leaving behind our firefighting son, and friends, and then returning to what is only a very partial and unlivable house, has been a positive experience, but that is the case. Jew-hatred was finally seen to be implacable and a permanent feature of Diaspora life, and only a complete separation from the haters by the establishment of a Jewish state and the relocation of the Jewish people to it could be a permanent solution....Now there is a Jewish state, but the problem of hatred-spawned violence against Jews has not ended, even here. There is a simple reason for that: we allow it.

On April 15, Khaled Koutineh, a resident of eastern Jerusalem who was angry about having been delayed at a checkpoint drove his car into a bus stop, killing Shalom Yohai Sherki, 25, and seriously injuring Shira Klein, a young woman. Yesterday there was another vehicular attack, in which four police officers were injured, one ‘moderately’. There were also two separate incidents on the same day in which Jews were attacked by knife-wielding Arabs.

There have been at least 5 vehicular attacks on Jews by Arabs since November 2014, and numerous knife and meat-cleaver attacks. Every single day, Jewish cars are bombarded with rocks and firebombs, sometimes resulting in death. Sure, they are always angry and “frustrated,” but there is a deeper ideological reason for what they do.

I want to rerun an article I wrote last year, after a particularly horrible firebombing, and add something to it.

You probably heard about the 11-year old girl who was critically burned on Thursday when the car she was riding in was struck by a firebomb thrown by an Arab terrorist. And you certainly know about the attack on the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue in Jerusalem in which four worshipers and a policeman were brutally murdered. You probably know about the several incidents in which Arabs drove their vehicles into groups of Jews, including one in which a 3-month old baby and a tourist from Ecuador were murdered, and another in which the driver got out and ran back to his not-yet-dead victim and cut her throat.

If you follow these things, you may also know that Jews are afraid to go to the historic Mount of Olives Cemetery in Jerusalem because of continued violent attacks on buses, cars and people. You may also have heard about the daily rock-throwing attacks on the light rail in Jerusalem, against Jewish-driven cars on the roads in Judea and Samaria, the acid thrown on a Jewish family, etc. I could go on. And on.

I think the firebomb incident was my own personal Kishinev experience. Now there is a Jewish state, but the problem of hatred-spawned violence against Jews has not ended, even here.

There is a simple reason for that: we allow it.

While Hamas's rockets and suicide bombers have been killing Israelis over the past twenty-five years, the Palestinian Authority's rhetoric has not been less lethal.

In fact, it is this fiery rhetoric that has created the inviting atmosphere for launching terrorist attacks against Israel, such as the attack that took place in Jerusalem on Wednesday, October 22.

Chaya Zissel Braun, a three-month-old infant, was killed when a Palestinian man slammed his vehicle into a crowd of people at a light rail stop in the city. Nine people were injured, three seriously, in the attack.

A security camera recorded 3-month-old Chaya Zissel Braun being wheeled in her stroller by her parents, about 15 seconds before they were hit by the terrorist's vehicle.

The Palestinian who carried out the attack was identified as 20-year-old Abdel Rahman al-Shalodi of the Silwan neighborhood in east Jerusalem. He was shot on the scene and later died in hospital.

Abbas and the Palestinian Authority [PA] cannot avoid responsibility for killing the baby.

In order to understand what drives a young Palestinian man to carry out such a deadly attack, one needs to look at the statements of PA leaders during the past few weeks. These are the kind of statements that encourage young men such as al-Shalodi to go out and kill the first Jews he meets on the street.

Confronting evil - Crush it, rather than surrender to it

...There are many lessons to be learned from the frightful kidnapping, ranging from tactical to strategic. But perhaps the most important of all is that we finally realize what we are up against: an enemy for whom cruelty is a virtue rather than a vice. The Palestinians are merely the latest incarnation of those who throughout history have sought our destruction. Like those who preceded them, they too shall fail.

The announcement on Monday night that the three Israeli teenagers kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists had been found dead near Hebron sent shockwaves throughout the nation.

After 18 days of Psalms and prayers, tears and tribulations, the people of Israel received a jarring reminder regarding the undeniable iniquity of our enemies.

There are those who still refuse to acknowledge this cold, hard truth, and instead choose to cling to futile hopes of Palestinian sincerity regarding reconciliation.

But the abduction and brutal murder of Eyal Yifrah, Gil-Ad Shaer and Naftali Fraenkel by Palestinians should lay to rest once and for all any such delusions.

To kidnap and slaughter three innocent teens is an act of pure evil. To put their families through the emotional hell of heart-rending uncertainty and anxiety is a feat of sheer wickedness. And to celebrate the incident, as Palestinians have been doing since it occurred, is indicative of a deep-seated depravity, one that salutes savagery and applauds barbarism.

Consider, for example, the interview with the mother of one of the Palestinian kidnappers, Amer Abu Eisha, that was broadcast Sunday night on Channel 10. After denying that her son was involved, Abu Eisha's mother proceeded to express delight in the possibility that he might actually have carried out such an atrocity.

"They're throwing the guilt on him by accusing him of kidnapping," she said, adding that, "If he truly did it, I'll be proud of him till my final day."

What can one possibly say in the face of such twisted immorality? There were no condemnations by Palestinian officials or commentators of the kidnapper's mother or her warped words, no expressions of shock or disgust that a human being could actually take pride in such malevolence.

The message needs to be clear and convincing

...The Israeli government must make courageous decisions in order to end the campaign of murder undertaken by the haters of Israel. We came back to the land of Israel so that Jewish blood would never again be forfeit. This is the leadership's duty toward the citizens of the country, toward the victims of terror and the thousands of years of Jewish history.

All of Israel was overcome by grief and pain after receiving the news that the bodies of Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaer and Naftali Frenkel had been found. An entire people, normally divided, identified with the cries of the mothers, and with their dignity and courage in hope and prayer. These have been rare days of unity, which rose from the ancient spring of mutual assurance. Who can know the pain in a mother's heart after losing a child, and who can understand the soul of a father weeping for his son, taken as a sacrifice on the altar of Israel's resurrection in its land.

The War of Independence is still not over; we must still pay the price of freedom. These pure and innocent boys join the multitude of Jews who gave their lives for our right to live as free people in our land.

After 2,000 years, we returned from an extended and terribly costly exile. We believed the return to Zion would put an end to the bloodshed that had become our lot on foreign soil. We hope that our matriarch Rachel would finally be able to stop crying for her lost sons. Yet we are still unable to rest in tranquility. For many years we have had to fight in the city, the village, at home and on the front lines against enemies and evil-wishers that have risen against us.

The people of Israel must contend with people who lack humanity. The difference between them and predatory animals is miniscule at best, because animals usually avoid killing their own species; but our enemies are willing to slaughter anything in their path for the sake of glorifying the sword and their brutal religion. Throughout the Middle East, the sword of God spills blood without pause.

Palestinian Arabs genuinely, overwhelmingly believe in barbarism as a strategy

Nearly two-thirds of the people ruled by the clique of which Abed Rabbo is a leading member are committed to the most extreme forms of lethal terrorist attacks on Israelis. In that light, do we need to speculate about the intended effect when PA insiders like him dismiss so comprehensively the current round of talks between their side and Israel?

A Pew Research Global Attitudes report issued today demonstrates statistically that

Overall support for violence in the name of Islam has declined among Muslim publics during the past decade... In many of the countries surveyed, clear majorities of Muslims oppose violence in the name of Islam. Indeed, about three-quarters or more in Pakistan (89%), Indonesia (81%), Nigeria (78%) and Tunisia (77%), say suicide bombings or other acts of violence that target civilians are never justified.

But there is one demographic where a clear majority of respondents - 62% - told Pew's pollsters that "suicide bombing is often or sometimes justified". That demographic is Palestinian Arab Muslims.

Knowing the murderous intentions of the Palestinian Arab "street" concerning us ordinary Israelis (and keep in mind that Palestinian Arab terror is rarely directed at the Israeli military), it casts a deadly light on the current strategies of the Mahmoud Abbas regime's inner circle.

Tears don't protect against murder. Bullets do.

...The rivers of tears keep flowing, but tears don't protect against murder. Neither do peace treaties. No amount of tears from the tens of thousands mutilated, tortured, crippled, wounded, orphaned and widowed by the PLO in all its front groups, splinter groups and incarnations, including its current incarnation as a phony government, has been enough to stop Western governments from supporting, arming and funding the terrorists.

After serving a few years in prison for his role in the Munich Massacre, Willi Pohl moved to Beirut. The brief sentence was a slap in the wrist, but Pohl had still served more time in prison than the Muslim gunmen who had murdered eleven Israeli athletes and coaches during the 1972 Summer Olympics. Mohammed Safady and the Al-Gashey cousins were released after a few months by the German authorities.

They went back to Lebanon and so did he.

A decade after the attack, Willi Pohl had begun making a name for himself as a crime novelist. His first novel was Tränen Schützen Nicht vor Mord or Tears Do Not Protect Against Murder.

While Pohl was penning crime novels, Israeli operatives had already absorbed the lessons of his first title. Tears, whether in 1939 or 1972, had not done anything to prevent the murder of Jews. Bullets were another matter.

The head of Black September in Rome was the first to die, followed by a string of PLO leaders across Europe. Those attacks were followed by raids on the mansions and apartments of top Fatah officials in the same city where Pohl had found temporary refuge. By the time his first book was published, hundreds of PLO terrorists and officials were dead.

European law enforcement had failed to hold even the actual perpetrators of the Munich Massacre responsible, never mind the representatives of the PLO who openly mingled with red radicals in its capitals. Israeli operatives did what the German judicial system had failed to do, putting down Safady and one of the Al-Gasheys, while the other one hid out with Colonel Gaddafi in Libya.

The Israeli raid on the PLO terrorists in Beirut's Muslim Quarter missed one important target. Arafat. And so, on another September day, some 19 years later, September 13, 1993, Israeli Prime Minister Rabin shook hands with Arafat and proclaimed, "Enough of blood and tears! Enough!" But the blood and tears had only begun, as a PLO on its last legs was revived and built its terrorist infrastructure inside Israel's borders.

By 1993, the year of the infamous Rose Garden handshake, 45 Israelis had been killed and 34 injured in Muslim terrorist attacks. A year after the handshake, the toll stood at 109 Israelis dead and 456 wounded. By 2002, the year that Israel's patience finally broke and Sharon sent forces storming into Arafat's compound, the numbers for that year were a horrifying 451 dead and 2,348 wounded.

Today, some 40 years after that September in Munich and 19 years after the even worse tragedy of that September in Washington D.C., with over 1,500 dead since that fatal handshake, there have been rivers of blood and tears. And a shortage of bullets.

Haven’t heard much lately about Palestinian terrorism? It’s not for lack of trying.

Except for rockets from Gaza—which, meanwhile, have stopped since Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense in November—you haven’t been hearing much about Palestinian terrorism. But it’s not for lack of trying.

Israel’s Shin Bet (domestic security agency) has released its figures for 2012. It says it thwarted 100 “serious” terror attacks over the year, a third of them planned kidnappings, four of them attempted suicide bombings. The Shin Bet also arrested 2,300 terror suspects in 2012, leading to 2,170 indictments.

For the first time in four decades, no Israelis were killed in terror attacks in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) in 2012. But the number of attacks there rose sharply, from 320 in 2011 to 578 in 2012. That included a steep, 68% rise in Molotov cocktail attacks, which are intended to burn victims to death.

These are big numbers—100 attempted serious attacks, over 2,000 suspects arrested, 578 attacks in one year in the West Bank. Considering that perhaps two million (the figure is disputed) Palestinians live in the West Bank, it would justify calling it a terror entity. As for Gaza, it numbers about 1.5 million Palestinians and fired 2,327 rockets into Israel during the year, finally necessitating Pillar of Defense.

What do people actually think?

Until better mind-reading technology is developed, the one way to gauge the opinions people hold is to ask them and to use proven survey methods to measure and understand the answers. Perfect? No, but it's hard to deny that professionally conducted surveys give us some insight.

The Palestinian Arabs have several active survey organizations that periodically test viewpoints and trends. One of the more prominent is the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR), headed by Dr. Khalil Shikaki. His office put out a release on Sunday [online here] analyzing what it calls "Palestinian Public Opinion Poll No. 46". It contains a wealth of insights which have gotten very little coverage in the news media. This is a shame because, being a Palestinian Arab analysis of Palestinian Arab opinion, it would appear to be saying something worth hearing.

The analysis, carried out with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Ramallah, covers a swathe of issues, and is certainly worth a few minutes of reading time. The old saying goes that there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Even so, these findings, based on surveys done in December 2012 after the UN decision to make the Palestinians a non-member state, and following the ceasefire in Gaza, are real and well documented even if (as with all surveys) the analysis behind them is open to discussion.

We'll jump to the terrorism question. Asked (via Question 61) whether they support armed attacks against Israeli civilians inside Israel (code terms to mean "we are not asking you about Israeli soldiers" and "we are not asking you about attacks in the so-called occupied territories, but inside the pre-1967 borders") , responses fell into three groups reflecting each of the two Palestinian Arab regimes as well as both taken together.

Living in one of the world's most contentious places, Israelis and Jerusalemites like us have grown accustomed to prescriptions from 'experts' that begin with some variant of "Israel is not doing enough and must agree to X so that there can be peace". This X tends to vary over time - see Rogers Plan, Madrid Plan, Geneva Accord and so many others.

But the condescension of the advice, as if Israelis did not want peace, rarely does.

Even rarer is a peace formulation that takes honest and accurate notice of what the Arab side is doing and saying. (We believe the doing is far more important than the saying but we have always asserted that when those Arab voices advocating terrorism speak up, they absolutely should be heard and their message understood.)

A week ago today, the head of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas, who is also, it is often overlooked, leader of the PLO and of the Fatah terrorist movement, delivered a major speech. It was given in Arabic of course, and since hardly a single one of the many Western journalists covering this area is fluent in that language, there was little media coverage other than what reporters from the major international news syndication agencies chose to reprint from the English-language handouts provided to them by Abbas' circle.

So long as money flows into the hands of terrorists, acts of terrorism are in almost no danger of being stopped. While most people will not argue with that, it's far from clear that we - even the civilized, well-educated and cultured among us - agree on who the terrorists are. Result: the misery, destruction and deaths go on.

Exactly six years and one week ago, we wrote here about a British charity called Interpal [see "31-Dec-06: Terror Sinks Roots in Even the Best of Neighbourhoods"] following an expose broadcast on the BBC investigative program, Panorama.

We pointed out at the time that Interpal (full name: Palestinian Relief and Development Fund) had been certified by the US authorities as a terrorist front organization - see this 2003 US Treasury announcement declaring several organizations including Interpal as “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” groups. But we noted that Interpal was happily continuing to do business in the UK, riding above the storm. We referred to a transcript of the Panorama programme (here) and to an online streaming-video version of the entire one-hour program headlined "Faith, hate and charity".

Yehudit's reports are courtesy of Hatzalah Yehudah and Shomron and are approved by the IDF. They refelct the information in emergency calls received by Hatzalah Yehudah and Shomron which is a voluntary emergency rescue organization that works along with the IDF, 669 Airborne Rescue, the security forces in the various communities of Yesha, and the Jordan Valley and is on call 24/7 on a strictly voluntary basis.

April 1, 2012 Sniper fire directed from Gaza on engineer work along the security fence in agricultural fields of Kibbutz Nir Oz. Anarchists and Arabs march near Bet Romano and try to reach Bet Hamachpela (the house of the Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron. Dozens of Arabs under the directives of anarchists in Hebron near the House of the Machpela. Following violent disturbances IDF arrested 4 of the rioters.

The arrested terrorists work with the Red Crescent and received weapons from PA security officer in order to perpetrate the attack. Road 443 near Bet Horon rock attack against Israeli bus causing moderate injuries to two young Israeli girls.

Ten years ago, 01 April 2002, one more day, in a week, that was to be seared into our consciousness, as James Bennet of the New York Times wrote about the day:

The Matza restaurant was one of those rare places in Israel where Jews felt they could find refuge in the company of Arabs.

But it turned out, none of them were safe. Although the restaurant's proprietors and many of its staff members are Arabs, a suicide bomber from the Islamic group Hamas walked through the door today and detonated his charge in the middle of the room, blasting screws and other shrapnel into people eating a late lunch.

He killed himself and 14 others, blowing the roof off the restaurant and spraying blood against the chrome table legs and glass out into the parking lot.

Witnesses described a wreckage of burning bodies and jumbled furniture, in which one woman bent over a wounded son, beside the bodies of her husband and another child. The dead included Israeli Arabs, the police said, but the authorities were still trying to identify some of the remains tonight.

On Friday, CNN ran an op ed under the title "Europe's blind spot on anti-Semitism". It is authored by Frida Ghitis, a Colombia-born journalist who has been published widely in the Washington Post, the International Herald Tribune and dozens of publications in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Some extracts:

What would prompt a 23-year-old man, born and raised in France, to chase a small, terrified Jewish girl into a school courtyard, look her in the eye and shoot her in the head? ...I believe an honest examination will reveal a blind spot among those fighting prejudice that has allowed the ancient Jew hatred that infected Europe for centuries to survive. The blind spot is this: When the prejudice - and even the call for murder - is made in connection with the Palestinian cause, people look the other way and give it a pass... Often, when the Palestinian link is made, the prejudice comes from the left, couched as passion for human rights. At times, human rights activists seem to have no problem with anti-Semitism - even of the genocidal variety - condemning it forcefully only if it is accompanied by anti-immigrant or anti-Muslim sentiment. Just days before the Toulouse murders, on March 19, the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva hosted an event featuring a high official from Hamas. That is a group whose easily obtainable charter calls not just for the creation of a Palestinian state, which is something I, like many other people, wholeheartedly support. But Hamas' charter also declares: "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it... The Day of Judgment will not come about until Muslims fight the Jews (killing the Jews)..." If a white supremacist organization advocated genocide as this one does, polite society would keep its distance, at the very least. Instead, polite society contributes to a campaign to demonize Israel, fueling the hatred that is then unleashed against Jews in France and elsewhere. Last week, a U.N. official posted to Twitter a picture of a heartbreakingly injured Palestinian girl, tweeting "Another child killed by #Israel ..." Turns out it was a 2006 picture of a girl who died falling from a swing... Why would a man kill small Jewish children? The answer has intrigued historians and psychologists for many centuries. But the more urgent question is what we can do to stop it from happening again. And the answer is that the first requirement is telling the truth about anti-Jewish ideologies.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, in a statement for publication, appropriately condemned the Jewish school attack by an Arab Muslim jihadist in France:

It is time for these criminals to stop marketing their terrorist acts in the name of Palestine and to stop pretending to stand up for the rights of Palestinian children who only ask for a decent life... This terrorist crime is condemned in the strongest terms by the Palestinian people and their children ... No Palestinian child can accept a crime that targets innocent people. (Agence France Presse -- English – March 21, 2012 Wednesday)

But to his own people, Fayyad praised terrorists who kill innocent people:

“Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad, opened his weekly radio address on March 24, 2011 by sending greetings to the Palestinian mother in honor of Mothers' Day,” Palestinian Media Watch reports. Fayyad’s greetings included:

I make special mention of all the women prisoners who are mothers: Iman Ghazawi, who has been imprisoned for ten years; Qahira Al-Sa'adi; Irena Sarahneh; Latifa Abu Dhiraa; Ibtisam Al-Issawi; Muntaha Al-Tawil; and Kifah Qatash.

PMW explains that "Qahira Al-Sa'adi drove a suicide bomber to an attack in Jerusalem in 2002, in which 3 were killed. Irena Sarahneh drove a suicide bomber to an attack in the Israeli city Rishon LeZion in 2002, in which 2 were killed and dozens injured. Iman Ghazawi placed a bomb at the central bus station in Tel Aviv in 2001, which was discovered before it exploded. Latifa Abu Dhiraa smuggled a bomb into Israel for a suicide terror attack in 2003 that was uncovered before it was implemented."

The absolute vileness of the “Palestinian movement” is hard for those of us who grew up in civilized societies like the US and Israel to comprehend. As a result, many of us may be prepared to listen when they say that it is about human rights or justice.

But every once in awhile we get a window into what’s really behind it.

Even Israeli police and security personnel, who have seen some terrible things, were shocked last year by the sadistic murder of five members of the Fogel family including a 4-month-old baby whose throat was cut, committed by two Palestinian Arab teenagers, Amjad and Hakim Awad, cousins from the village of Awarta.

Captured after an intensive manhunt, the Awads were both convicted and given multiple life sentences. There was even consideration of applying the death penalty, something not done in Israel since Eichmann was hanged in 1962. Unfortunately, the court decided against it.

One might expect that the official Palestinian reaction — after all, they are preparing to petition the UN for statehood again — would have been something like “we condemn violent extremism, although we understand their frustration, etc.”

But they are past pretending even that much.The official reaction is that the butchers are heroes!

The Gilad Shalit saga was another defeat of Israel; praising ourselves for our national solidarity cannot change the fact that this was another victory for terror.

In those terrible days 10 years ago, when Palestinian terror was striking at Israeli civilians almost daily in the streets of the cities of Israel, there were those who argued that terror could not be defeated by military means, while some said that it could not be defeated by military means alone and others argued that terror can and should be defeated solely by military means.

After the Passover massacre at the Park Hotel in Netanya in April 2002, the argument was settled. The IDF's Operation Defensive Shield effectively put an end to the Palestinian terror that originated from the areas of Judea and Samaria. It was done by military means alone. The renewed presence of the IDF in Judea and Samaria has since then provided the real-time intelligence information and the ability that is required to discover terrorist cells before they become active and to eliminate them. Defeating terror required the elimination of the capability to carry out terrorist attacks. As long as that capability exists there will be terror. It is an example that has been studied by others facing the threat of terror.
