...This is a long game, and the West simply doesn't understand any mentality that goes beyond an election cycle. The Palestinians might pretend to negotiate for short term gains but they never give up on their objective of taking over all of Israel. After all, that's the entire reason for insisting on the "right of return." And when a PA minister lists Jews praying at the Kotel as a "violation of Al Aqsa," the real outrage is that no one is reporting on what reveals the true Palestinian position...

With all the press given over the Temple Mount, people tend to forget that the Palestinian Authority (and the Muslim world as a whole) is just as adamant that Jews do not have the right to pray or even be outside the Temple Mount as well.

The Palestinian Authority Minister of Waqf and Religious Affairs, Sheikh Yusuf Adais, issued a statement yesterday on "Zionist attacks" of the "Al Aqsa Mosque" during August. Some of these "attacks" include:

- Likud MK Yehuda Glick set up a symbolic office outside one of the gates of the Temple Mount. He sat in a chair.

- Israel continues to allow archaeological research outside the Temple Mount (such as in the City of David.)

-"Dozens of settlers prayed prayers" outside one of the Temple Mount gates

And finally:

- "Thousands of settlers performed the Talmudic rituals at the Wall of Al-Buraq" - meaning thousands of Jews went to the Western Wall to commemorate Tisha B'Av, the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple

United Nations Security Council Resolution #2334 is worded in a way that creates some very odd results. Yes, the Western Wall is now an "illegal settlement," and any Israeli activity there is a "flagrant violation of international law."

Those who prefer to blame Israel for the lack of peace in the Middle East can only do so by ignoring Palestinian behavior and the incitement against Israel and Jews that is conducted by the Palestinian Authority’s official television and newspapers.

The latest evidence of such incitement comes in the form of a documentary broadcast on PA TV (film and translation courtesy of the invaluable Palestine Media Watch) that discusses Palestinian plans for the future of Jerusalem. Rather than a paean to the virtues of sharing the city after it is divided along the 1967 lines as they have demanded, the film claims the historic Jewish ties to the city are “false” and seeks to prepare Arabs for what will happen after the Jews “disappear from the picture, like a forgotten chapter in the pages of our city’s history.” It then discusses a scheme to eradicate the Western Wall Plaza where Jews worship — referred to as a “place of sin and filth” —with a Palestinian housing project!

It bears repeating that this sort of thing isn’t merely an irritant to the peace process. It is, in fact, the crux of the problem. So long as the political culture of the Palestinians reinforces messages that seek to label the Jews as foreign interlopers who will in time be expelled from the land, a peace deal that recognizes Israel’s legitimacy, no matter where its borders are drawn, is impossible. That is why the PA seeks to evade talks with pointless stunts such as the attempt to get United Nations recognition for their independence without making peace with Israel.

The Palestinian leadership has continued to spew forth this sort of propaganda while rejecteding peace deals with Israel in 2000, 2001 and 2008. It has even refused to talk with the Netanyahu government. But that hasn’t stopped groups like J Street and Americans for Peace Now from continuing to propagate the myth that it is Israeli settlements or the Netanyahu government’s alleged intransigence that is the obstacle to peace. The only way to cling to this belief is to pretend things like this official television film don’t exist.

The Western Wall: Is it the Kotel or Al-Buraq Wall?

"The Shechina [Divine Presence] will never move from the Western Wall" according to an ancient tradition (Exodus Rabba 2.2). Originally, this saying did not refer to the present Western Wall which is part of retaining wall of the Temple Mount but to the western wall of the Temple-building. Since nothing remains of the original Temple wall, this saying is nowadays often applied to the Kotel, the current Western Wall. The ruins of the original western wall of the Temple building on the Temple Mount were still present during the Crusades when the Jewish traveler Benjamin of Tudela visited Jerusalem sometime between 1159 and 1172. He reported that "the Western Wall is one of the [remaining] walls of what was once the Holy of Holies.... All the Jews come to pray before this wall."

The British Royal Commission that was established in 1930 to determine the respective claims of Moslems and Jews at Western Wall also confirmed that Jews continued to pray on the Temple Mount Western Wall after the destruction of the Second Temple. "According to tradition, the Jews' wailing-place at that time seems to have been the stone on Mount Moriah where the Mosque of Omar now stands."

There is no evidence that the present Western Wall was used as a site for prayer prior to the Ottoman conquest of Jerusalem in the 16th century. Rabbi Ishtori Haparchi (1280-1366), the earliest Holy Land geographer, does not mention the Western Wall in his encyclopedic work Kaftor v'Ferah, even though he devotes an entire chapter to Jerusalem geography. A footnote by the editor of the 1899 edition of Haparchi's book states that "in the author's day and for many years thereafter the Western Wall (where we pray nowadays) was covered with earth and all the Jews went to pray at the Eastern Wall of the Temple Mount and outside the gates of the Southern Wall."

Al-Mutawakil Taha, deputy minister of information in the Palestinian Authority disputed recently on a Palestinian government website that the Western Wall was a retaining wall of the Temple compound. "This wall has never been a part of what is called the Jewish Temple" the report claimed. "However, it was Islamic tolerance which allowed the Jews to stand before it and cry over its loss." A U.S. State Department spokesman said, "We strongly condemn these comments and fully reject them as factually incorrect, insensitive and highly provocative."

PA Ministry of Information: Kotel not Jewish

The Western Wall belongs to Muslims and is an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Haram al-Sharif [the Noble Sanctuary], according to an official paper published on Monday by the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Information in Ramallah.

The paper, which has been presented as a “study,” was prepared by Al-Mutawakel Taha, a senior official with the PA Ministry of Information to “refute” Jews’ claim to the Western Wall.

“The Zionist occupation falsely and unjustly claims that it owns this wall which it calls the Western Wall or Kotel,” Taha, who is also a renowned Palestinian poet and writer, wrote in his project. “The Al-Buraq Wall is in fact the western wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

He added that the Jews had never used the site for worship until the Balfour Declaration of 1917. “This wall was never part of the so-called Temple Mount, but Muslim tolerance allowed the Jews to stand in front of it and weep over its destruction,” he wrote.

“During the British mandate in Palestine, the number of Jews who visited the wall increased to a point where the Muslims felt threatened and then there was the Al-Buraq Revolution on August 23, 1929, where dozens of Muslims were martyred and a large number of Jews were killed.”

The author, who is affiliated with PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction, emphasizes that over the past few decades Jews had failed to prove that the wall had any connection to their religion.

Just in case you think that there is the slightest possibility that the author of this "study" actually believes what he is writing, rather than knowingly and willfully lying, here is the proof.

PA TV: Jews praying at Western Wall are "sin and filth"

On the Jewish New year, PA TV broadcast a documentary showing Jews praying at the Western Wall while the narrator called it "sin and filth."
The same program also described Jewish history as "false."

Yesterday was marked around the world – by Muslims and anti-Zionists of various stripes carrying pro-Hamas and pro-Hezbollah placards – as Al-Quds Day, dedicated to liberating Jerusalem from the Israelis – or, as the Iranian satellite news channel Press TV put it last night, demanding an end to “Israel’s 62-year [sic] occupation of Palestine” . The Al Quds Day march in Britain has been described, with good reason, as “the biggest annual Israel hatefest in London” – at yesterday’s ‘"We Are All Hizbolla Now" and "Zionism Equals Racism" were just two of the racist chants. Resistance was provided by a small group of Zionists, a group of Iranian expatriates in London and a group from the EDL. Al-Quds Day was inaugurated by the late Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, the year he took power in Iran. “I ask all the Muslims of the world and the Muslim governments to join together to sever the hand of this [Israeli] usurper and its supporters,” he declared. “I call on all the Muslims of the world to select as Al-Quds Day the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan ... and through a ceremony demonstrating the solidarity of Muslims world-wide, announce their support for the legitimate rights of the Muslim people. I ask God Almighty for the victory of the Muslims over the infidels.” On the eve of this year’s Al-Quds Day Ayatollah Khamenei stated: "Israel is a hideous entity In the Middle East which will undoubtedly be annihilated." And yesterday, in Teheran, President Ahmadinejad proclaimed: "If the leaders of the region do not have the guts, then the people of the region are capable of removing the Zionist regime from the world scene" and pronounced the peace talks between Binyamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas as "stillborn and doomed."
