Rock-throwing has always been depicted as a harmless act of symbolism used by the powerless, but after an alleged settler attack, it’s time to agree that it’s an act of terror.

As far as the mainstream media is usually concerned, when rocks are thrown in the Middle East, it’s nothing to get too worked up about. When Palestinian mobs throw rocks at Israeli soldiers at the Gaza border fence as part of their effort to cross into the Jewish state and commit mayhem, such actions are generally depicted as a nonlethal form of protest.

Ever since the Palestinians launched an intifada—a “national uprising”—in December of 1987, rock-throwing has been treated as a popular form of protest against Israel. Indeed, the act of throwing rocks at Jews has long since become an iconic symbolic of the “resistance” to Israel, glorified in Palestinian culture, poems and songs. Throwing rocks at soldiers and settlers or their cars and buses has become something like a national sport, as well as a rite of passage for Arab youth.

Incidents of stone-throwing at Jewish targets are a daily occurrence, and so numerous that Israel barely bothers to keep statistics on them. But we do know that at least 14 Israelis have been killed as a result of car crashes caused by rock-throwing or direct blows. When Palestinians are arrested in connection with such crimes, they are either depicted sympathetically as legitimate combatants using the only weapons available to them or as children who are unjustly harassed or even tortured by the Israeli army and police for what is, at worst, nothing more than so-called teenage mischief-making.

But after more than 30 years of such stories in the media, the international press has finally decided to treat this “harmless” activity in the West Bank as a crime.

The Missing White House Statement: Stone Throwing Is Violence

...Because, as bizarre as it may sound, in the eyes of ‘peace partner” Mahmoud Abbas and the other Palestinians, stone throwing is “nonviolent resistance” and “peaceful protest”. And in the absence of a clear and unequivocal stand that stone throwing constitutes an act of violence, Mr. Obama, the Quarter and all the others, aid and abet this Palestinian charade that their leadership supports only “nonviolent resistance to the occupation”.

President Obama should be issuing such a statement.

The Quartet should too.

For that matter, Meretz, Hadash along with J-Street and all the other left-wing Jewish groups should openly identify with this very simple truth.

Some Thoughts Concerning a Palestinian-Arab Worshiper and his Pile of Rocks

...What is truly disgraceful and disheartening, however, is Israel's complicity in the discrimination against all non-Muslims on the Temple Mount. It undermines everything that Israel allegedly stands for. If Israel is the national homeland of the Jewish people, how is it that we gave away our holiest site to people who vow to drive us from our own land?

Nothing says "holy" so much as stock-piling primitive weaponry in the Al-Aqsa mosque to be used for violence against Jews.

The Temple Mount issue is of particular fun because it is particularly unjust. We are told that the holiest place within the Jewish tradition also happens to be the "third holiest site in Islam." I have not dug into this question as much as I will need to, but I wonder just when Al-Aqsa became the third holiest site within Islam?

The Temple Mount has been the holiest site for religious Jews for over three thousand years because it is the site of the First and Second Temples. It represents where the Jewish people come from. Just when - I wonder to myself aloud - did it become the third holiest site in Islam?

My guess, in historical terms, is a quarter past last Tuesday.

My suspicion, and I have yet to verify this, is that this notion of Al-Aqsa as "the third holiest" whatever is a recent invention designed specifically to challenge Jewish claims to Jewish heritage on Jewish land.

In the nineteenth century, prior to the rise of modern Zionism, the Temple Mount was desolate. Jerusalem, itself was desolate. The Arabs did not care about either until the Jews sought to save ourselves and our families through returning home to the Land of Israel after centuries of persecution by Europeans... not to mention Arabs.

As with most every Shabbat for the last 10 years, a tour through the Casbah of Hevron did take place yesterday, a bit noisier than usual as it is Ramadan, but definitely closing out with a bang. Also not surprisingly, the normal assortment of varied European and American anarchists, leftists, and general promoters of conflict were present and accounted for. The film below is a product of the ISM, our resident keffiyah clad wannabees, but who do show a bit more caution then their former poster child Rachel Corrie.

One of the participants, now to be known as "The Other Side of the Gate" felt the ISM's introduction was worthy of a response, and with no further ado -

Hey there! So, I have a different opening statement:

During the month of Tammuz, Palestinian Authority residents of Hebron continue to increase the tension in the old city of Hebron. Armed Israeli forces were required to protect the unarmed Jewish families as they attempted to pass through the Old City market customarily closed to Jews.

Jews peacefully confronted this racial and religious persecution, showing their objection by leaving their ghetto which comprises approximately 3-percent of the city to walk quietly through the marketplace. They were faced with threats, physical and verbal intimidation, followed by stones -- for no other reason than that they dared to cross the line in protest of apartheid. Israeli residents then left the market as the hostile population chanted Allah Hu Akbar, pushing against the gate which protects the Jewish population from their neighbors. Stun grenades afterward were necessary to scatter the threatening mob.

As is to be expected with any ISM product, the missing context takes place at 1:25, as at 1:24 everyone is out the gate, then an edit pause and at 1:26 the flash-bangs are going over the gate. The teen in green at 1:25 seemed to know what was about to happen and is making tracks to move away. As he does reappear again at 1:39-1:48 one can try to surmise what seems to being passed from one hand to another. The camera angle throughout seems to spend a good deal of time covering ground and feet, but to raise it higher would likely have ended up including some not so innocent throwers of other objects in the film.

She was a human being whose right to life deserved to be respected

...The death of this child wasn’t mourned, let alone mentioned in the Western press. Israel’s critics don’t care about her because she was a “settler” and therefore worthy of being singled out for murder. But, like the Palestinian children who are used as human shields by Hamas terrorists, she was a human being whose right to life deserved to be respected. May her memory be for a blessing and may those responsible for her death and the many other Israelis who have been injured and terrorized in this fashion be punished for their crimes.

One of the more familiar themes of those seeking to rationalize or even justify Palestinian rock throwing is to treat it as a largely harmless activity, especially when compared to the force the Israeli Defense Forces can bring to bear when it is engaged in combat. But earlier this week we received yet another reminder of how dishonest these arguments can be. On Tuesday, four-year-old Adele Bitton lost a fight for her life that began in March 2013 when rocks thrown by Palestinians into a car driven by her mother near the West Bank city of Ariel sent the vehicle crashing into a truck. She had been unresponsive since the attack due to neurologic injuries suffered in the attack. But little Adele bravely held on until she finally died of a respiratory infection. She is not the first Jew to be murdered as a result of this practice and probably won’t be the last. Palestinians may treat it like a national sport but rock throwing is a murderous terrorist crime, not a mere protest tactic.

Like the justifications heard for the rockets launched indiscriminately at Israeli cities, towns and villages, apologists for the Palestinians say they should be allowed to throw rocks because they don’t have tanks or an air force. For Palestinians, the sight of a Jew in a car living in a place where Arabs would prefer no Jews to live is enough to justify a rock thrown at a moving vehicle. But whatever one thinks about West Bank settlements, the rocks are lethal weapons. When used in this manner they are a practice that any American who was subjected to similar treatment on a U.S. highway would consider attempted murder.

Thoughts Concerning the Palestinan-Arab National Sport

...The truth of the matter is that the conflict, as we see it today, is an extension of the conflict as it emerged out of millennia of Arab-Muslim majority persecution of the stunted Jewish minority, grounded in Koranically-based theocratic bigotry toward all non-Muslims. The reason that the conflict goes on is not out of some alleged historical injustice against Arabs by Jews, but because of rank and long-standing Arab bigotry against Jews. Period.

Writing in Arutz Sheva, Yishai Karov and Cynthia Blank tell us:

A four-year-old boy was lightly wounded Sunday morning after rocks were thrown at a car he was traveling in near the Gush Etzion Junction.

The rocks shattered the car's window and the boy was hurt by the glass fragments.
Magen David Adom paramedics arrived on the scene to give the child medical care, before evacuating him to a clinic in Efrat.

The MDA volunteers reported that the child suffered cuts to head as a result of broken glass.
Last week, a Jewish Israeli was lightly injured after Arab terrorists hurled rocks at his car at the Habitot Junction south of Shechem (Nablus) in Samaria.

Arabs love to stone Jews.

Unfortunately, over the centuries they've done such a good job of keeping our numbers so low and driving us out of our communities in the Middle East that the only real place to find Jews in that part of the world is within Israel, which is why it is up to the Arabs of the Land of Israel to maintain the national pastime.

{You can only imagine how jealous the rest of the Arab world is! They don't even get the opportunity to throw rocks at Jews... at least, not yet.}

While western-progressives tend to think that Arabs have every right to try to kill Jews as a matter of righteous "resistance," the truth of the matter is that the hostile Arab majority has been pelting Jews with rocks at least since the time of Muhammad.

Temple Mount closed to Jews? Then close Temple Mount to Muslims as well.

...While one could critique that approach, there is some logic to it. Images of Israeli police officers breaking into Al-Aqsa mosque, or beating Muslims, do Israel a disservice. Better the world sees pictures of masked Hamas men pushing wheelbarrows loaded with stones and bottles through the mosque.

It happened in 1988 on the Temple Mount. It started when a gang of Muslims captured an Israeli policeman -- an officer in the "Yamam" counterterrorism unit. By the time he was rescued by his comrades, he had been beaten and bloodied. His weapon, however, remained with his captors. With the firearm in hand, thousands of Muslims barricaded themselves in Al-Aqsa mosque. Police began closing in on the mosque, but resisted breaching its walls, as was common in those days. Eventually, a compromise was reached and a team of officers approached the mosque gates. The besieged group inside cracked open the doors and the gun, according to an agreement reached earlier, was "concealed" beside it. Police "discovered" it. Israeli "honor," as well as the gun, were restored to their rightful places. The masses made their egress from the mosque.

Now it's 2014. Compromises hardly ever work at the Temple Mount anymore. Restraint no longer projects strength, but rather weakness. A small concession breeds larger concessions. There is a limit to containment. Already more than year has passed since members of Hamas and the Islamic Movement in Israel began organizing trips to the Temple Mount to provoke and antagonize Jews who happen to be there. The police back down time and again, often opting for the easy solution -- closing the Temple Mount to Jews or stringently restricting their access to the site.

Last Passover, thousands of Jews sought to make a pilgrimage to the Temple Mount. Indeed, that is their right. Even the government recognizes that, but the Muslims community has dictated a different reality, "occupying" the Temple Mount for all intents and purposes. Yet again, Muslims barricaded themselves in the mosque and police treated the site as an extraterritorial zone.

On the other hand, the police has lost its power of deterrence at the Temple Mount. Once it realized that, it was already too late. Any sign of weakness spawns violence and more vehement incitement. The slightly more aggressive measures taken by Israel during Passover have already been rendered ineffective. The Temple Mount has been "occupied," and the Jews -- the victims here -- have been left outside. The Muslims -- the aggressors -- are celebrating in their faces. The time has come to liberate the Temple Mount again.

BBC on the first Intifada - Romanticising rocks and stones

...Interestingly though, when rocks, stones and other projectiles are thrown at British civilians the BBC’s portrayal is decidedly less empathic, rightly describing resulting fatalities as murder and the perpetrator as a killer.

Exactly twenty six years ago, on December 9th 1987, this writer and a colleague were driving to a meeting when – after turning a blind bend on one of the minor roads near Beit Sahur – we suddenly found our route blocked by a group of some fifteen to twenty young men, their faces concealed by keffiyahs and large concrete blocks or rocks in their hands.

The ensuing incident lasted seconds only. As soon as they saw the car’s Israeli number-plate, the pre-prepared rocks and concrete blocks were hurled at our vehicle. My colleague, who had instinctively braked in order to avoid driving into the people standing in the road, quickly got hold of himself, slammed his foot on the accelerator and we sped through the mob and the hail of rocks until we were out of range.

Thanks entirely to my colleague’s quick reaction, there was only minor damage to the car and although very shaken, we (including the baby I was carrying at the time) had escaped unharmed. Only after we arrived home much later in the evening and watched the news did we realise that what we had witnessed was part of the beginning of the first Intifada.

Several weeks ago we noted here that an article by Tarik Kafala promoting the myth of a non-violent first Intifada still appears on the BBC News website. Members of the public searching for information on the first Intifada on that website will also find two additional items (here and here), one of which is notable for the fact that it also promotes the myth that ” the Palestinians were largely unarmed”.

Another notable feature of both those articles is the way in which stone-throwing is misleadingly described as having been directed solely at Israeli soldiers.

The "birthright and duty" to hurt Jews

Using Haaretz as her platform, columnist Amira Hass wrote on Wednesday that "throwing stones is the birthright and duty of anyone subject to foreign rule." This while 2-year-old Adele Biton has been fighting for her life for the past several weeks, after her parents' car was hit by rocks and crashed into another vehicle.

Not only is stone throwing a right, Hass calls it "a duty"! That is how you rise up against the "regime" and the "occupation." Do you hear us, dear terrorists? You are duty bound to throw rocks and murder Jews; if you don't do that you are not really fighting the "foreign regime." Tell that to the late Asher Palmer and his 1-year-old son Yonatan, who were killed after rocks were thrown at their car.

The Palmers' killer was convicted on Tuesday. The court ruled that a rock thrown at a moving car was more dangerous than a bullet fired from a car in a drive-by shooting. Is there any difference between the stone-thrower who was found guilty of killing someone, and Amira Hass, who justified — and effectively encouraged — such action in her despicable column this week? Yes. There is a huge difference. In the world we live in, self-hating Jews and other "random" Jews, are considered to be one and the same. Thus, if Hass condones rock-throwing terrorism, the thinking goes, she could teach us something.

"Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all," says the Bible (Proverbs 31:29). In the case of Hass ("hatred" in German), many self-hating Jews do their job well, but she has surpassed them all.

Hass does the explaining for the killers: "In the inner syntax of the relationship between the occupier and the occupied, stone-throwing is the adjective attached to the subject of 'We’ve had enough of you, occupiers.'"

But this only refers to the inner syntax of self-hating Jews like Hass or the editorial board of Haaretz, which appears to have renamed the paper "Haaretz [the land] is not ours." But the real syntax has been out in the open for over a century: stone-throwing is another means for killing Jews.

Disgusting! Kever Rachel Closed Due to ...Rock-Throwing

I didn't know whether to title this blog, DISGUSTING or HUMILIATING. But I decided for the former, because that's how today's scene at Rachel's Tomb seemed to me.

I drove, as on every other visit, to Rachel's Tomb to pray, together with my dearest Mother (until 120) and my lovely daughter. As we exited the car, we noticed groups of people standing around - half on the parking lot side of the street and half in the entrance to Rachel's Tomb.

Two armored police trucks were holding back the worshipers.

Arabs were throwing stones over the giant cement barrier. Smashed stones and shattered glass lay on the street in front of Kever Rachel. Policemen were calling out blurred instructions through their megaphones.

Visitors were told they could enter Rachel's Tomb, the burial place of the Jewish Biblical matriach Rachel if they could "run quickly and keep against the wall."

DISGUSTING.

That is how one comes to pray at the resting place of his grandmother - running for his life, hoping to dodge the stones and boulders lobbed from a few meters away on the other side of the wall?

I was so excited to cap off our lovely family day today with a family visit to Mama Rachel. My own mother had come 5000 miles to visit her loved ones, and every trip to Eretz Yisrael is made complete with a visit to and heartfelt prayer by the burial place of our beloved Matriarch Rachel.

Jews from all over the world put Kever Rachel - Judaism's third holiest site, after the Kotel and the Cave of Machpelah - on their must-visit list.

But not today.

Everyone stood around waiting, whispering, impatiently trying to show patience, shaking their heads in DISGUST.

The IDF and how not to build a winning army

No soldier who goes through basic training learns how to use his rifle as a police baton. Not every soldier learns, in one course or another, how to extract himself from a violent mob. Soldiers' training is based on a legacy of victory in battle, helping their wounded comrades under fire, and using their weapons accurately to avoid hitting "uninvolved" parties. Each combat soldier learns how to hold a line while charging toward the enemy, so as not to mistakenly shoot a comrade in the back.

However, no soldier was ever taught to hold a line with lawyers, who represent those who claim to carry the badge of morality and peace but won't hesitate to stab him in the back.

In the not-so-distant past, all combat soldiers were willing and ready for the moment when they would need to use their weapons and put to use everything they had been prepared and trained for. In the not-so-distant past, each soldier knew that "returning home safely" was a goal achieved through the level of their soldiering skills, partly the result of the expertise acquired through training and partly due to the dependency on one's friends and commanders.

The reality has changed but no one bothered to give the soldiers the proper tools to deal with this impossible situation. Today, "coming home safely" means not falling victim to an embarrassing photograph taken by a terrorist with a camera for a weapon. This is what happens when you take skilled soldiers trained to win and ask them to be policemen and crowd dispersers.

Our short memory clouds our judgment and requires us to provide the correct guidance to our soldiers, our children, in the battle they are currently fighting. The lynch carried out by the crazed mob in Ramallah 12 years ago, in which two Israel Defense Forces reservists were horrifically murdered, has been all but forgotten. A little less than a year ago a father and son were killed when a rock thrown at their vehicle hit the father in the head while driving. They, too, have faded from our memories.

One Year Later, Not One Word. We Must Break the Silence

Yesterday (Tuesday), September 11, was another of the painful, heartbreaking days when we went to Opher Military Court to hear and witness the continuing trials of the Arab terror cell that planned and perpetrated the murders of Asher and Yonatan Palmer HY"D.

Last September 23, on that fateful Friday, Asher Palmer was driving with his small infant son, Yonatan, to Jerusalem to meet up with his pregnant wife Puah, and spend the Shabbat there. As they traveled down Highway 60 from Kiryat Arba, towards Jerusalem, an enormous boulder was thrown out of a moving car at Asher's car. The result of this murderous, pre-planned terror attack was the murder of two innocent souls: Asher and Yonatan Palmer z"l.

Yesterday, in the Military Court, the hearing was about the head of the terror cell, Wahil, who planned and perpetrated this attack on innocent Jewish travelers. As we sat there waiting for the hearing to begin, we were even more upset than usual because yesterday was the Memorial for these two innocent souls who were murdered, only because they were Jewish.

Wahil turned to the court and explained that it is "very difficult for me to travel from the prison to Opher, and I feel ill from the journey." He then asked for the consideration of the court to reconvene the trial only in November as he is studying for his matriculation exams.

At this point Michael Palmer, who was sitting next to me, and Adv. Adrian Agassi representing the family of the victims and I looked at one another, and not for the first time in all of the unbelievable experiences in this unending series of court hearings, were left at a loss.

Massive rock attacks on the Gush Etzion-Hebron Highway near Bet Umar causing damage to vehicles. Crowds of Arabs blocked the highway in both directions. The IDF went in to restore order. The Arabs circled and attacked the military force and 1 of the Arabs was arrested by the army. A large number of IDF soldiers protected the road and restored order ensuring the travel on both sides of the road.
Near Neve Zuf at Niv Zalach Arab crowds threw rocks and attacked Israeli vehicles. IDF went in to disperse the Arab attackers.
Near El Arub on the Gush Etzion-Hebron Highway Arabs attacked Israeli vehicles including a bus with rocks.
Haramia Valley north of the British police Junction in the Benjamin Region, Arabs attacked Israeli vehicles with rocks.
443 Highway near the Dor Gas Station 3 Molotov cocktails were thrown on Israeli cars. The Arab terrorists also lit a pipe bomb on the highway.
Arabs from the village Betin attacked Israeli vehicles with rocks between the T-Junction and Ophra in the Benjamin region. Several vehicles were damaged.

Shechem: During the night hours the IDF and security gave permission to enter the Tomb of Joseph. A happy group of over 1200 Jews entered the Tomb. The Arabs attacked with rocks near Balata resulting in the injury of an IDF soldier who was evacuated in a military vehicle to a hospital. Gunfire was directed also from a distance but no injuries.
IAF attacked several terrorist Hamas positions in Gaza following the ceaseless rocket attacks aimed at Be'er Sheva, Netivot, Ashkelon, the Ashkelon region and the Jewish communities in the area.
Over 160 missiles rockets, and mortars have been launched against Israel in the last three days. Thousands of men, women and children have been forced to take cover and stop their normal lives in order to try and remain safe.
Remember almost 7 years ago Israel made a unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip abandoning and destroying all of the successful productive Jewish communities there and turning thousands of Israelis into refugees.
Since the destruction of Gush Katif the entire south of Israel is under rocket fire and terrorist attacks.

Over 130 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel. In Kibbutz Sufa as a result of a mortar landing there, a fire broke out and the security coordinator succeeded in putting the fire out with no injuries.

Philadelphia passage in the region of Kadesh Barnea terrorist penetrated the area and set an explosive device which exploded killing one of the workers who was building the security fence. (As of the time of this posting at least 2 terrorists have been killed, the roads have been closed in the area, and the IDF is conducting an ongoing search for additional terrorists. Israeli Navy identified sailing vessel that departed from Gaza and deviated from the sea area that was permitted to sail. INF (Israeli Naval Forces) arrested 2 suspects, one of whom showed distress in breathing and was taken by MDA to treat him.
Highway 443 near Bet Horon 2 Arabs car hijacked a Toyota Corola from a 27 year old man who was beaten but uninjured. Israeli police are investigating.
3 Mortar attacks from Gaza landed near Security Fence.
Attempted kidnapping and truck theft near Libne Junction in the Yatir region of the Southern Hevron Hills. 3 Arabs tried to kidnap the driver and in self-defense the driver opened fire. The driver was moderately injured in the attack. As a result of the attack 2 of the Arabs were killed and 1 injured.
Former Kadima MK Avi Dichter related to the continuous attacks against Jews and Israeli vehicles on the roads of Judea and Samaria by stating, "It is very easy for such situations to deteriorate into terror attacks even when the first intention is criminal. For example the horrendous murder of the Fogel family that began as a desire to steal and resulted in the murder of the family. Both the IDF and Israeli police must respond to these threats and prevent them from happening."

Arab terrorists threw 5 Molotov cocktails on Bet Yonatan in Silwan, Jerusalem. The fires were extinguished by the security guards.

In the last few days hundreds of violent attacks were directed against IDF patrols, Border Police and civilians by Arab terrorists with rocks, fire bombs, Molotov Cocktails, rocks put on the road to force the vehicles to stop. Security forces have responded to these murderous attacks using restraint.

- The village of El Arub, southwest of Bethlehem on the Bethlehem-to-Hebron road: A bottle is hurled at an IDF post
Hawara, south of Shechem (aka Nablus): Rocks are thrown at Israeli vehicles. A bus is damaged.
- The vehicle of one of the Jewish residents of Hebron is blockaded on the main road between Kiryat Arba and Hebron. The driver is fortunately able to extricate herself from a potentially very harmful situation.
- The Jewish section of Hebron: A bottle is thrown at an Israeli bus
- Near El Fuar in the Southern Hebron Hills: A rock attack on an Israeli bus
- El Arub (again): Rocks are hurled at vehicles traveling on the Gush Etzion-Hebron arterial road
- Bet Umar, notorious site of a large number of rock throwing attacks: Additional such attacks directed at vehicles traveling the Gush Etzion-Hebron road
- The road between Turmus Aya and Shilo in the Benjamin region: One again, rock attacks on Israeli vehicles
- Kiryat Arba in the vicinity of the Palestinian Arab neighbourhood of Jebel Johar: A rock-throwing attack on the nearby IDF security post

In a recent letter to the editor at the NYT, former Mayor Edward Koch asked what would seem to be a both simple and reasonable question:

Rock Throwing by Arabs

To the Editor:

Thomas L. Friedman (“A Middle East Twofer,” column, April 4) endorses what he calls “nonviolent resistance by Palestinians” against Israel. He adds that Palestinians need to “accompany every boycott, hunger strike or rock they throw at Israel with a detailed map” delineating their territorial demands.

I was attacked by “nonviolent” Arab rock throwers while touring the old Jewish quarter of Jerusalem in 1991. I needed nine stitches but was fortunate to have suffered only relatively minor injuries. If my attackers’ aim had been a little sharper, I could have lost an eye, or worse.

Many Israelis as well as foreign tourists have been badly injured, sometimes permanently maimed, in such “nonviolent” assaults. Israelis have even been murdered by rock throwing. Last September, Asher Palmer, 25, and his infant son, Yonatan, were killed when “nonviolent” rocks were thrown at their car, causing a fatal crash.

We may disagree on borders, settlements, refugees or other contentious Arab-Israeli issues. But can’t we all agree that in the English language, the terms “nonviolent” and “rock throwing” are mutually exclusive?
