...As with most of these work accidents, the most significant part is not the accident itself. It’s how and where it took place. In this case, the Hamas tunnel engineer was working underneath his own home, turning the civilian structure into a military purpose. That is something we see throughout Gaza, where Hamas hides among and underneath civilian structures, using civilians as human shields.

A “work accident” is a commonly used term to refer to Palestinian terrorists who die by their own hand when explosives or explosive devices they are handling detonate prematurely, or when a tunnel they are constructing collapses.

Joe Truzman at his valuable weekly Ground Brief newsletter (to which you should subscribe) reports on the latest Hamas work accident:

The military wing of Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades, acknowledged Friday [note – link goes to Hamas website] that one of their tunnel engineers, Ayman Zidan, had died. They were not specific about the cause of his death, only stating it was an “accident.” However, Qassam activists claimed Zidan was working on a tunnel underneath his home when it collapsed and killed him.

From the Bethlehem-based, European-funded Ma'an News Agency, Friday:

6 children injured in Gaza explosion | GAZA CITY 

(Ma'an) -- Six children were injured in an explosion in the Gaza Strip on Friday, a medical official said. Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra told Ma'an that six children aged 6 to 10 were moderately wounded when an unknown device exploded in Rafah. One child suffered serious injuries to his hand.

Seems like a good time to remind readers about the two rockets that were fired at Israel on Thursday March 20 but (to adopt the euphemism that is sometimes applied on those rare occasions when such shooting-themselves-in-the-leg-yet-again moments happen in Gaza) "fell short". We wrote about this here: "21-Mar-13: Rockets fired at Israelis as media focuses attention elsewhere".

The number of foreign journalists based in Gaza is not great (Ma'an does have offices and staff there). Which causes us to wonder how to interpret the silence of the BBC, normally quite proud of the independence and professional quality of its Gaza team, and particularly Gaza-based Jon Donnison in the face of this report of six Gazan Palestinian Arab children being 'moderately wounded' according to Ma'an. (We can see no report anywhere on the BBC's web presence about the maiming of six children in Gaza, but if we're wrong, we would appreciate hearing about it.)

In Gaza, Arab-on-Arab injuries are a daily reality. Why are they so rarely reported?

We have noted here many times that the thuggish rocket-men of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip manage to crash their rockets onto the Arab side of the Gaza/Israel fence regularly. The inevitable injuries and damage that result are, as far as we can tell, never reported. It's only news when the party doing the injuring or damaging is Israel.

In a small effort to correct that distortion, here is a status report from the GANSO website. GANSO describes itself thus:

The Gaza NGO Safety Office (GANSO) is a project of CARE International, funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) with the aim of providing the information and analysis the NGO community needs in order to implement humanitarian projects safely.

Here's a snapshot of the GANSO "Incident Alerts" page we captured at 10:00 pm, Tuesday night, November 13, 2012.

The "incident" in row 2 reads:

"11/13/2012 13:00 13 NOV, 1300hrs: Pal. ops. fired 1 HMR from E of Jabalia, NG, toward the Green Line. The rocket dropped short and hit a house E of Jabalia, NG. No injuries reported."

We will interpret that for you. In English, in our words, it says:

Palestinian Arab terrorists from among the numerous such murderous groups active here in Gaza under the leadership and direction of Hamas, the Gazan branch of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood, fired a Qassam rocket, likely of the kind manufactured in Iran or China (but that we prefer to call "Home Made Rockets" or HMRs in order to hide what's really going on), in the sort-of-general direction of Israel around 1:00 pm today. They intended to hit civilian Israelis, Israeli property, Israeli schools or Israeli vehicles - in short, anything Israeli. This technique is called taking pot-shots. The rocket, as happens so often when ideological idiots are given access to dangerous tools, did not manage to make it as far as the Gaza/Israel border. Instead it crashed down onto a residential section of the town of Jabalia, a Palestinian Arab settlement located on the northern edge of Gaza City. There, it penetrated the roof of a house. No one dared to report any injuries."

Here's a small and modest experiment.

Since we believe Palestinian Arab casualties that result from Palestinian Arab mis-handling or misfiring of Palestinian Arab explosives, guns, rockets, mortars and the like almost never get reported in the mainstream news media, we will be watching to see how much coverage this incident below gets. It appears at this moment on a Bethlehem-based (and somewhat Hamas-hostile) Palestinian news site.

Shooting themselves and their families, friends and neighbors is an everyday event in the catastrophic societies (both Gaza and Judea/Samaria) occupied and created by the Palestinian Arabs. But the news channels wake up only when there's an Israeli party to blame.
