Another day, another attempt to burn some Israeli Jews alive - by Stephen M. Flatow

...You won’t read Ghanam’s remarks in The Washington Post or hear them quoted on CNN. That would remind the American public that Palestinian leaders support burning Jews to death, and publicly lie to cover for the would-be killers. And that would undermine the campaign to give the firebomb-throwers a sovereign state in Israel’s backyard.

A group of Palestinians tried to burn some Israeli Jews to death March 23. Just another day in the Middle East.

The four attackers drove up to the perimeter of the Jewish community of Beit El, north of Jerusalem, and began hurling firebombs toward homes there. A firebomb, also known as a Molotov cocktail, is of course a deadly weapon. It explodes on impact and unleashes a torrent of flames. We can all easily imagine what would happen if those firebombs had struck people or homes.

Fortunately, Israeli soldiers immediately fired at the would-be murderers, killing one and wounding three others. That should be the end of the story. But it won’t be. Here’s why.

To begin with, one of the terrorists was 17 years old. That means “human rights” groups will add him to their list of “Palestinian children killed by Israelis.” Even if a killer is just one day shy of his 18th birthday, that’s good enough to define him as a “child” in the eyes of those who want to smear Israel.

The fact that a Palestinian died, while no Israelis were burned to death as he had intended, meant that many news outlets portrayed the attacker as the victim.

Gas, poison, kitchen knives, incitement

...There is little doubt that in the torrent of Palestine-centric propaganda so beloved in leftist circles in Europe, Australia and the US, these three are rapidly going to be termed "political prisoners" and "freedom fighters"; the gas and the strychnine poison will be instantly expunged from the media record.

Several more reminders today of what life lived in close proximity to rampant, religion-fueled terrorism feels like. Here's one.

Three Palestinian Arab youths, all aged 17, evidently residents of Tul Karem in the area controlled by the PA, were in court on Sunday facing charges relating to terrorist attacks by means of knives, gas and Strychnine poison, an insecticide that is lethal to humans. Their targets were the military headquarters of the IDF in Tel Aviv.

Sorry, that was a cynical attempt at mild humour. Their targets were, of course, ordinary unarmed Israeli civilians, preferably sleeping. A Jerusalem Post report [here] gives a sketchy outline that involves attacking commuters on an Israeli bus with bus, then stabbing them to death once they were overcome, and then doing something unspecified with the poison. It probably made sense in their 17 year old feverish imaginations, particularly given what we know about the degree of incitement that permeates Palestinian Arab society, much of it directed at immature personalities like these three.

A teachable moment about reporting in yesterday's attempted (but foiled) terrorist attack

...Reminder: don't ever expect Reuters - or any of the other large media organizations that package the news in this area - to tell you this or anything like this. It just doesn't pay for them to be that frank and honest.

Reuters reports that a Palestinian Arab man, identified by "a Palestinian medic", was killed today by Israeli soldiers. The nameless medic gives the dead man's name as Muhammad Mubarak. The Reuters report says, without actually quoting anyone, that the dead man was 21 and "a laborer from Jalazoun refugee camp near the Palestinian city of Ramallah, north of Jerusalem".

It's interesting to us that the Reuters editors, evidently not wishing to actually mix in, avoid expressing any view as to the circumstances in which Mubarak "was killed".

Perhaps they just want readers to make up their own minds about what happened. Thus, according to Reuters:

An Israeli military spokeswoman said a Palestinian gunman was shot after attacking troops stationed near the settlement of Ofra. "The soldiers responded immediately to eliminate the imminent threat to their lives and fired at the terrorist, identifying a hit," she said.

Two versions: an un-named "Palestinian medic". And the official spokesperson of the IDF.

Reuters is saying, as it often does in Israel-related stories, take your pick. As if its news gatherers have never before encountered the phenomenon of the obvious spinning of contentious facts by interested parties when the source is (a) anonymous) and (b) not especially well placed to know or to say.

Infiltrator shot threatening Meitar as UK's ambassador tries to make sense of it

...While His Excellency focuses on those opportunities for peace that are being "killed", the IDF and most of our fellow citizens will remain committed to measures that reduce the danger of children and their families in Meitar and throughout Israel suffering the same fate.

Sunday morning: A Palestinian Arab male, age not specified at this point, was intercepted a short time ago by an IDF patrol and prevented from sabotaging the security fence near Meitar, a suburb of Beer Sheva in Israel's south. Warning shots were fired, according to the army, quoted by Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post, as a result of which the would-be infiltrator is in nearby Soroka Hospital recovering from light wounds to his leg.

He's a lucky man: given yesterday's well-publicized call for more and better terrorist warfare against Israelis made by arch-terrorist Ismail Haniya, the prime minister of the beleagured Hamas regime in Gaza and communicated globally by Associated Press, it would have been understandable if the Israeli patrol had shown less restraint. Most Israelis are only too aware of the fairly clear signs that an effort is underway by terrorism advocates within the Palestinian Arab world to escalate the scale and severity of their ongoing attacks. For instance:

17-Oct-13: Apparent hostile attempt this evening to penetrate IDF base near Jerusalem

11-Oct-13: A third murder, probably by terrorists again, as our side prepares to free more of them

22-Sep-13: Sniper attack in Hebron this evening

Haniya's call yesterday for “armed resistance” against the restarted peace talks between Israel and Palestinians is understood here as a euphemism for lethal terror.
