The absolute moral imperative to bring Malki Roth’s murderer to justice - by Joseph Frager

The mastermind of the Sbarro bombing has been living it up in Jordan, celebrating her part in the slaughter of the 15-year-old American-Israeli and many other innocents.

Joseph Frager..

On Aug. 9, 2001, 15-year-old Israeli-American Malki Roth was among the 15 Israelis and tourists slaughtered in a suicide bombing at the Sbarro Restaurant in Jerusalem.

The mastermind behind the horrific terrorist attack, which left another 130 innocent people wounded—including a U.S. citizen who to this day remains in a vegetative state—was Jordanian national Ahlam Ahmad al-Tamimi. Tamimi admitted that she had selected the popular pizza place as a target because it was a known favorite for families. She also expressed her “delight” that so many children were killed.

Tamimi—whose conviction by an Israeli court led to 16 life sentences plus 250 years—was released from prison in 2011 as part of the deal with Hamas to release captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Since her release, Tamimi, now 39, has been living freely in Jordan, even hosting a TV show for five years. She portrays herself as a heroine who “holds a medal of honor” for her “life imprisonment in Zion’s prisons.”

The 18th anniversary of a very bitter Jerusalem bombing anniversary - by Sarah N. Stern

After American largess and Israeli know-how, the Jordanians have been offering safe haven to a cold-blooded murderer of American citizens who has made a career out of her crime.

Aug. 9 marks the 18th anniversary of a very dark day. That was the day that Ahlam Tamimi calmly picked up Izz-al-Din Shuheil al Masri from his home in al-Aqabah in Judea (the West Bank) and serenely delivered him to the Sbarro pizzeria shop in Jerusalem. That was the site Ms. Tamimi had intentionally scoped out because it was a popular eatery frequented by families, singles and Jews of all ages.

It had been a sultry day and many young students, who were off from school during the long summer recess, were looking for ways to spend their time. One of these students, Malki Roth, entered the restaurant with her best friend, Mihal Raziel. At the same time, Izz Al-Din entered the restaurant and—using a guitar case rigged with nuts, bolts and nails, together with a suicide vest rigged with 10 kilograms of explosives—detonated himself. The explosion rocked the nearby vicinity, murdering 15 people, eight of them children.

Two of the murdered were American citizens: 15-year-old Roth, and Judith Greenbaum, 31, who was five months pregnant at the time. A third American, Chana Nachenberg, lies in a permanent vegetative state.

Immediately after the bombing, Ahlam Tamimi was on a Palestinian bus back to Ramallah, and described what happened as news reached them about the mounting death toll. “As the number of dead kept increasing, the passengers were applauding. They didn’t even know that I was among them … ,” she said. “On the way back [to Ramallah], we passed a Palestinian police checkpoint, and the policemen were laughing. One of them stuck his head in and said: ‘Congratulations to us all.’ Everybody was happy.”

Herein lies the heart of the matter regarding the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which also pertains to our treatment of the Hashemite Kingdom.

Ahlam Tamimi admits she planned the Sbarro massacre, yet for parts of the media, she remains 'an accomplice' - by Arnold Roth

Other than that Ahlam Tamimi is an acclaimed hero among Palestinian Arabs and in Jordanian society in general (which is overwhelmingly composed of Palestinian Arabs); that she has been provided with support, protection, privilege and exposure that arguably no mass murderer in history has enjoyed at the hands of any government; and that the victims of her malevolence were mainly Jewish children (unlike every other Jordanian extradited to the US); and that she has publicly and for the record admitted, indeed boasted, about her central role in the bombing and the resulting deaths...

In a piece about FBI Most Wanted fugitive terrorist Ahlam Tamimi published yesterday, the Washington Post breezily describes our daughter's murderer this way:

For Israelis, the Tamimis are a group of provocateurs intent on manipulating the media to hurt the country’s image. One cousin [of Ahed], Ahlam Tamimi, was an accomplice to a suicide bombing. "

At this point, we know a lot about Ahlam Tamimi. Here's how she herself details the central role she took in the 2001 Sbarro pizzeria massacre:

Interviewer: "Who chose Sbarro [restaurant, as the target of the attack]?"

Ahlam Tamimi: "I did. For nine days I examined the place very carefully and chose it after seeing the large number of patrons at the Sbarro restaurant. My mission was just to choose the place and to bring the martyrdom-seeker (i.e. the human bomb, a young man called Al-Masri). [I made] the general plan of the operation but carrying it out was entrusted to the martyrdom-seeker."
..."

Interviewer: "Do you know how many children were killed in the restaurant?"

Ahlam Tamimi: "Three children were killed in the operation, I think."

Interviewer: "Eight."

Ahlam Tamimi (smiling): "Eight? Eight!"

This is the monster that Jordan's King Abdullah refuses to extradite to the United States despite the US Department of Justice's request under a valid extradition treaty that has existed between those two countries since 1995 and under which multiple Jordanian felons have been extradited to face trial in US courts.

Questions for Jordan's heir apparent: Stopping terror? - by Arnold Roth

...There's nothing especially shocking in any of this except for how the brazen hypocrisy on terror against Israelis gets repeatedly air-brushed out of all mainstream media coverage of King Abdullah's court.

The Jordan Times, published in Amman and owned by a kingdom-controlled foundation, reported this morning the not-entirely-stunning news that

His Majesty King Abdullah, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania, on Friday left the Kingdom, heading to New York, where he will be leading the Jordanian delegation to the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly... Deputising for the King, HRH Crown Prince Hussein is scheduled to deliver Jordan’s speech before the General Assembly... In 2015, the Crown Prince became the youngest person ever to chair a Security Council meeting, when he called for measures to prevent the world’s youth from being lured into the dark world of extremism... ["King to take part in UN meeting", September 16, 2017]

If you're a news reporter or editor, wouldn't you want to take the opportunity to get Jordan's ruler to clarify his view of terrorism in light of the free-pass and ongoing protection he has given to a mass-murdering Jordanian woman who was named to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list on March 14, 2017?

No mainstream media has tackled him on this. In view of his repeated public condemnations of terror, that's strange, disturbing and something that ought to be corrected.

If King Abdullah is out of reach, can we suggest putting a similar question to HRH Crown Prince Hussein who is going to deliver Jordan's speech to the UN General Assembly? There's much he could explain, but frankly it's the reference in the Jordan Times piece above that has us intrigued.

After all, a public official and next-in-line-to-the-Hashemite-throne who speaks publicly about "measures to prevent the world’s youth from being lured into the dark world of extremism" might be fair game for some timely questions about how to stop terror. He's young (now 23) and perhaps a little naive (just our impression). But editors ought to note he's already two years older than that other Jordanian, Ahlam Tamimi, was when she masterminded the massacre at Jerusalem's Sbarro pizzeria. And he has attracted some extravagant praise:

Surprise! The NY Times recommends Hamas book award choice - by Petra Marquardt-Bigman

...let’s all cross our fingers that Ben Ehrenreich’s paean to the terror-loving Tamimis will get the Hamas Book Club award – he definitely deserves it, and it would also be a fitting tribute to the good judgement of the New York Times.

Last week’s anniversary of the Sbarro massacre was celebrated by the Aqsa TV channel, and their audience very much appreciated being reminded of the carnage perpetrated 16 years ago by Palestinian terrorists.

Last year, just in time for the 15th anniversary of the massacre, the American writer Ben Ehrenreich was busy celebrating all the praise he was receiving for his newly published book that glorifies the Tamimis of Nabi Saleh, who are not only ardent supporters of Palestinian terrorism in general, but who also have the greatest admiration for their relative Ahlam Tamimi, the proud mastermind of the Sbarro bombing.

We made a video back then, introducing Ehrenreich’s main protagonists.

It seems that glorifying terror supporters like the Tamimis is good business: for the 16th anniversary of the Sbarro bombing, Ehrenreich’s book came out as a paperback, and – just like last year – the New York Times is doing its best to help Ehrenreich sell his book.

Falling victim to the media's "most ethical" behavior - by Frimet Roth

...Please share this post with your friends. You will thereby help to intensify the pressure that is vital to achieving Tamimi's extradition by the Jordanian king. Our meeting here with the people from the US Department of Justice three weeks ago persuaded us that that is the only chance we have of seeing this evil woman brought to justice.

Like many of you, I've been cleaning, sorting and finding the unexpected these days.

Yesterday, a birthday card that the entire family gave our Malki on her 11th birthday turned up. Each of us had written our wishes and mine read:

"My Dearest Mali,
You are a constant source of נחת [Hebrew: pleasure] to us - may you continue in your דרך [Hebrew: way] until מאה ועשרים שנה years [120 years is the traditional Jewish wish for a full lifespan] in good health... And not to worry about a profession; you seem blessed with the skills of an extremely competent עוזרת [Hebrew: cleaning lady - she always tidied up after me] as well as a very talented finder. [She always located the many items I constantly misplaced]. What more can one wish for? Of course, if those fields don't pan out for you there are always those musical, mathematical and artistic talents to fall back on (though we'd be understandably disappointed in that event). In the meantime, עלי והצליחי [Hebrew: Rise and succeed] and enjoy!
Love, Mom"

She only lived another four and a half years. The pain of longing for her is indescribable.

But there is another pain that I can convey. Its source is the injustice of her murderer's freedom and continued incitement to kill more Jews. And the sympathy she garners from the mainstream media.

Ahlam Tamimi, our daughter's grinning, boasting murderer, decides she's actually innocent - by Arnold Roth

...So to be clear: though she didn't do anything and says she knows nothing about the charges against her, there's no shortage of videos showing Tamimi boasting of systematically selecting a site (Sbarro) that attracts crowds of children; of the joy she felt at learning how many lives she had extinguished; about the rising pleasure of the people sitting with her as she fled the scene in a Jerusalem-to-Ramallah Arab taxi who were thrilled at the news of a growing death toll coming in over the radio about the massacre... and what a battle she faced to not admit to them that she was the bomber.

The woman who masterminded the massacre at Jerusalem's Sbarro pizzeria on August 9, 2001 and who was subsequently tried and sentenced (after confessing to all 15 counts of homicide) is now, finally, the subject of a United States warrant for her arrest and extradition to the US. (The Al Jazeera version of the background, along with our commentary, is here.)

Jordan, where she has been living freely since October 2011, has had an extradition treaty with the US since 1995. But it began claiming two weeks ago that the treaty has no effect... for reasons no one should take seriously.

Ignore the specious legalities. Jordan refuses to hand her over to the US because she is a national hero to the Jordanians, 70% of whom are Palestinian Arabs. To make that clearer: she's a hero not because she is innocent (no one seriously claims that) but because she did plan and she did carry out the killings of Israelis. That's what makes them proud.

Most of the people she killed were children. All were Jewish; the majority were religiously-observant Jews. None of this is coincidental. It was central to the killer's plan.

Our daughter Malki who was 15 years old was among those blown to pieces.

Thanks to the “Zionist enemy” – which does not have the death penalty - by Ruthie Blum

...Thanks to the “Zionist enemy” – which does not have the death penalty and so values the life of each of its citizens that it exchanged more than 1,000 murderers for Schalit — Tamimi has been a free woman since the age of 30. And thanks to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with the “Zionist entity” in 1994, Tamimi will continue to enjoy state protection to preach jihad and martyrdom against the Jews. Let her story, and that of Israeli policy, be a lesson – and a warning.

In October, 2011, a female Palestinian terrorist named Ahlam Tamimi – who had assisted in the bombing of the Sbarro pizzeria in Jerusalem 10 years earlier – was released from an Israeli prison and shortly thereafter immigrated to Jordan.

Though, in 2003, she received 16 consecutive life sentences for her accompanying Izz al-Din Shuheil al-Masri to the bustling fast-food restaurant in the center of Israel’s capital — where he blew himself up, killing 15 innocent Israelis and tourists (among them seven children and a pregnant woman) and wounding another 130 — Tamimi was freed in what came to be called the “Schalit deal.”

For more than five years, beginning in 2006, Israel had been engaged in fruitless diplomatic and military efforts to force the terrorist organization Hamas to return abducted IDF Cpl. Gilad Schalit from captivity in Gaza. Fearing that the young man’s time was running out – and helpless in the face of mass public pressure by Schalit’s parents and the public, the Israeli government ultimately agreed to the demand of the jihadists calling the shots. This involved exchanging 1,027 mostly Palestinian terrorists for the single soldier.

Two hundred and eighty of these terrorist prisoners had been incarcerated for carrying out deadly attacks against Israelis; Hamas operative Tamimi was prominent among them. Nor was she notorious in Israel alone. Since two American citizens had been victims of the Sbarro carnage, Tamimi was also known in the United States.

The following article was published by Al Jazeera in Arabic on Wednesday and in English yesterday (Thursday). It's an entirely uncritical account of a notably vicious convicted murderer's version of why she should be left alone and not have to face justice. The reporter does not challenge a single one of her claims.

A criminal complaint was unsealed today charging Ahlam Aref Ahmad Al-Tamimi, also known as “Khalti” and “Halati,” a Jordanian national in her mid-30s, with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. nationals outside the U.S., resulting in death. The charge is related to the defendant’s participation in an Aug. 9, 2001, suicide bomb attack at a pizza restaurant in Jerusalem that killed 15 people, including two U.S. nationals.

When they crave attention, where do the practitioners of Pal Arab barbarism turn?

...Ehrenreich is hardly alone in bringing together unabashed enthusiasm for jihadist thuggery while masquerading as a holder of progressive-ish views. We think of them as card-carrying members of the pampered moral narcissists brigade. Often treated as belonging to the forces of peace and human rights, those among them whose work focuses on the Arab/Israel conflict tend to be driven by a sense that they are in a struggle towards victory, where winning means the defeat and destruction of another people's state by whatever means, legitimate or foul, are available to them.

August is a hard time in our family.

The Hebrew month of Av, which is now, is traditionally a period associated with some of the hardest moments in Jewish history down through the ages. But then, as it crescendos on the 9th day of Av (that's this coming weekend), the collective mood quickly eases and the month takes on an altogether different, comforting character.

Not for us. The 20th day of Av is when our daughter Malki was murdered in a Hamas terror attack, along with her closest friend and thirteen other innocent victims inside the Sbarro pizzeria which was located back then in the very center of Israel's capital city. The anniversary comes out this year (since we observe it according to the Hebrew calendar date) on August 24 as we noted here. That's when as a family and a community we remember our losss.

According to the civil calendar, however, the fifteenth anniversary of that cruel act of savagery is tomorrow, Tuesday. A number of articles have emerged today, marking the day and what it signifies.

Two of the best happen both to focus on the work of an American journalist who has lately made a name by airbrushing out the nauseating sides of barbarous Palestinian Arab jihadism, leaving behind a fabricated confection of brave, blond, innocuous fighters for freedom, justice and rights.

Reminders that terrorist savages have a sentimental side

...Is there anything a reasonable person can learn about terrorism and what it does to people - especially to those who worship it and its practitioners - by considering this small handful of reactions to just one Islamist massacre?

Yesterday (Monday), we commemorated the anniversary of a massive explosion that ripped through a pizzeria crowded with children in the center of Israel's capital city. It was a catastrophe that upended lives, futures and attitudes and - in relatively small measure - influenced public policies, at least for a time.

We are the parents of one of the children murdered there that day. In fact, a majority of the 15 lives lost in the attack by an Islamist terrorist gang on Sbarro in Jerusalem were children. (A 16th victim, a mother whose child was then two years old, remains in a vegetative state to this day.)

August 9, as it has been for the past fourteen years, was a time for writing and tweeting and receiving back messages of strength and support from the people in our lives who care for our well-being. But if we take a brief look at the Arab world - parts of it, at any rate - yesterday was a day of memories for them too.

But of a very different kind, as we found by Googling today:

This Facebook account celebrates the anniversary because of the 19 "Zionists" killed at Sbarro Jerusalem. That most of them were children goes unmentioned, perhaps because of the sheer transcendental joy of the celebration. And if they overstate the death toll by 4, so what? The human bomb is offered hearty congratulations on his fine achievement. The page has gotten 190 Likes and 13 Shares between the time it was launched on Sunday morning and 5:00 pm today, Monday, Jerusalem time.

The Sahafah Arabiah website, based in Egypt, has a tribute page honoring the killing of 20 "Zionists" at Sbarro. (Actual death tolls are evidently a minor detail once the Islamists have crossed the "massacre" threshold.) Referring to the guitar case carried on the human bomb's back and in reality filled with thousands of nails along with ten kilograms of tightly-packed explosives, the writers of the page wax lyrical about "playing melodies of revenge". It seems music does that to you, if you're inclined a certain way.

Gaza and Jerusalem: Remembering the assault on Sbarro

...Complacency is a chilling stance for Israel to take. It was just such an attitude that enabled the Sbarro massacre to be perpetrated. Several days later, the Minister of Justice revealed that on the morning of August 9, 2001, all the relevant arms of the government were aware that Hamas operatives, armed with explosives, were making their way to the capital intending to bomb and murder as many innocents as possible. They decided not to warn the public. They opted not to empty the streets. They relied on police patrols scouring the summer crowds for suspicious-looking individuals. Fifteen precious souls perished because of that lame, blasé response – among them my precious Malki.

Each year, we visit our child’s grave on the day of her murder. And with the passing years our grief acquires fresh layers.

In 2011, we grappled with the travesty of justice that befell us via the Shalit Deal. This past week, we gathered at the cemetery with the knowledge that Hamas, the cult that dispatched her killers, has gone through a makeover.

Once considered a dire threat to Israel, Hamas is now overshadowed by the maelstrom of Iran’s nuclear threat and ISIS conquests.

Some experts even suggest that in comparison with the Gaza chapters of ISIS and Al Qaeda, Hamas is a less insidious brand of terrorism. Others don’t even see it as a danger to Israel, while still others embrace it sympathetically.

In recent weeks, to commemorate the 2014 Gaza war, news networks have intensified their quest for the video clip that most compellingly depicts the Gaza situation. Evoking pathos for the Gazans’ plight, their journalists blame Israel for that war, its casualties, its aftermath, the increasingly dismal Gazan economy and the suffering of the Gazan children. Hamas rarely get so much as a slap on the wrist.

Power, powerlessness, justice, injustice

...Experiencing the death of a loved one at the hands of ideology-driven killers is a multi-stage exercise in learning about powerlessness and impotence. Fourteen years (today) after being initiated into the "circle" very much against our wills and without the faintest awareness ahead of time that it was going to happen, we know a lot about the experience and the inexpressible pain it brings. Also the intense frustration.

We were not there next to our child to keep her safe when the human bomb and the chief plotter made their way together into the center of the city where we live. We were completely unaware that the police and the military knew in advance that it was happening and chose not to cause alarm by making a public statement. We were not present in the ruins of the pizzeria, nor in the ambulance, nor in the hospital: our Malki, just 15, surrounded by people living and not living, died alone.

We read about the arrest and the trial of the woman who engineered the massacre of children via the news media. And about her conviction and about her sentencing. Government officials of course knew. No one felt the need to inform the victims.

We feared for years that the chief plotter of the Sbarro massacre, a woman who was 21 years old when she executed her satanic plan on behalf of the Islamist terrorists of Hamas, was going to be freed long before completing the 16 terms of life imprisonment to which the three-judge panel in a court sentenced her. (The sentence came with a sincere-sounding judicial recommendation to the government that no consideration ever be given to commuting her sentence or including her, specifically her, in any future political deal). But we did not know this when it happened. It was only much later that we got our hands via unofficial channels on the court protocol. It has never been officially published.

Who's willing to confront Orange CEO on terror, now that he is visiting Israel?

...They concern Orange Jordan and Orange France's backing for a school in Jordan that has declared the Islamist terrorist murderer of our daughter as its "success model". More than one third of the foreign governments, NGOs and corporates who had been providing that Jordanian school with backing and funding withdrew their source when we wrote to them and pointed out the scandal. Orange ignored all our letters.

From Ynet this evening:

Stephane Richard, CEO of French telecoms giant Orange, landed at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv Thursday morning. Richard said he would meet with officials and Orange staff during his two-day visit. The orange boss was in Israel to "clarify the misunderstanding" sparked by his remarks during a news conference in Cairo on June 3 in which he said the firm was planning to withdraw its brand from Israel at the earliest possible opportunity. An official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the he would meet with Richard on Friday... Richard for his part insisted there was no political motivation, and that the decision was solely driven by Orange's brand strategy. According to Orange, Israel is the only country in the world where it has a trademark agreement with a company that is not a subsidiary. Over the weekend Richard told AFP that he "sincerely regrets" the comments, and was invited by the Israeli government to visit the Jewish state, saying he would be "a welcome visitor".... Partner, Israel's second largest mobile operator, had insisted the Orange chief travel to the country to explain himself, an invitation he quickly accepted.

We think the management team at Partner, Orange's Israeli licensee, ought to ask Richard to respond to the letter we sent him and about a dozen of his Orange management and media relations colleagues in January. They concern Orange Jordan and Orange France's backing for a school in Jordan that has declared the Islamist terrorist murderer of our daughter as its "success model".

Imprisoned terrorists, cell phones and foreign aid: an update

...Karake's change of job title is a necessary part of the transparent ruse by which the PA pretends not to be paying its terrorists from foreign aid. And the providers of that foreign pretend to believe that their money goes nowhere near those Barghoutis and Tamimis,

This is a follow-up to our post ["31-May-15: Lights, camera, action, terror"] of a few hours ago. Stuart Winer, writing on the Times of Israel site, says that the government approved a legislative bill today defining the steps that the Israel Prison Service can take to prevent prisoners - and in particular prisoners like Barghouti about whom we wrote today - from using cell phones.

The new bill classifies access to cell phones for prisoners based on the crimes of which they are convicted, and in particular if they are terror- or security-related offenses... [It] noted that in recent years jailed terrorists have become increasingly more involved in efforts to direct and promote attacks against Israel, including kidnappings... The bill [is] sponsored by [newly appointed] Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked [Times of Israel, today]

There's unfortunately no mention of the propaganda value that brand-name terrorists like Barghouti can tap into once they are able to speak to the outside world or send out photos of themselves, as happened last week (and as we discussed here). We hope the government committee understands the importance of that aspect.

The report adds that Barghouti is now in solitary confinement. What's more, Issa Karake, a PA figure, is quoted saying the convicted killer has "begun a hunger strike in protest".

Poster child for those lusting for the murder of still more Jewish children

...The bomb-making sociopath has been confined to an Israeli prison since his 2004 trial. From inside, he has reminded every possible audience of the bestiality that underpins his murderous nature. 66 innocent people killed? Not enough, he declares - explicitly. In 2006, in the intimate setting of a quiet interview beamed throughout the world by CBS television's '60 Minutes' program, Barghouti notoriously said "I feel bad because the number is only 66. This is the answer you want to hear? Yes, I feel bad because I want more."

It might not come as the greatest of surprises that we follow from a distance the public appearances of two of the central actors in the killing of our fifteen year old child.

Malki, the oldest of our daughters, was one of the innocents murdered in a savage Hamas terror attack on central Jerusalem's Sbarro pizzeria on August 9, 2001. Fifteen people were killed there that day. A sixteenth has been unconscious through all the years since the bombing. 130 more, most of them pedestrians passing through the busy central Jerusalem intersection outside the store, were maimed and terribly injured.

The explosion was achieved by the sending of a human bomb into the center of Jerusalem with what looked to be a guitar case slung across his back. The explosive device (for that is what it was) had been assembled by a bomb-maker, Abdullah Barghouti, a Kuwaiti, who during a brief career produced a series of civilian-seeking explosives that blew 66 people to pieces.

In 2004, he was convicted in an Israeli court and sentenced - having pleaded guilty - to one term of life imprisonment for each of the deaths he was instrumental in causing. Plus one additional life term for all those he injured and who survived: a total of 67 life terms in all.

Barghouti's satanic handicraft took innocent lives in some of the most horrific terror attacks of the period:

The war against terror and the stunningly different fates of two terrorists in Jordan

...What Jordan - a sovereign state at least half of whose population defines itself as Palestinian Arab, ruled by a dynastic family from Saudi Arabia - ought to do with its terrorists is not our concern. Jordan's laws purportedly outlawing terrorism don't get enough critical attention, and that's a much larger problem than we can address. But when one of that country's most celebrated institutions is found to be incubating lethal support for jihad, terror, hatred and all that goes along with that, and that institution is lavishly backed by governments, NGOs and corporations from outside the Arab world, that's a real problem.

In Jordan, the government this morning executed two "convicted jihadists". The motivation is explained by the Hashemite kingdom this way:

Jordan earlier vowed an "earth-shattering" response after IS posted a video online showing what militants say is the pilot standing in a cage engulfed in flames. Mamdouh al-Ameri, a spokesman for the Jordanian armed forces, said on Tuesday that Lt Kasasbeh had "fallen as a martyr". "His blood will not be shed in vain. Our punishment and revenge will be as huge as the loss of the Jordanians." [BBC]

Giving expression to the "punishment and revenge", two imprisoned Iraqis - Sajida al-Rishawi, a would-be female suicide bomber, and a male al-Qaeda terrorist convicted in 2008 for killing a Jordanian - were sent to the gallows at daybreak today [Aljazeera].

The female had been sentenced to death for her role in a high-profile 2005 suicide bomb attack at Amman's Radisson Hotel that killed 60 people, most of them guests at a wedding. She herself actually killed no one since her bundle of explosives failed. She confessed on Jordanian television but retracted it later. According to Wikipedia, she was

sentenced to death by hanging by a Jordanian military court on September 21, 2006. She appealed against this conviction but her appeal was dismissed in January 2007. At the time of her execution, she was still engaged in the process of appeal of her sentence.

Regular readers of this blog know about another Jordanian female, an ex-prisoner, also a terrorist, with a different fate: Ahlam al-Tamimi.

Unlike Mrs al-Rishawi who was hanged today, Mrs al-Tamimi is a Jordanian, born, bred, educated and (following an 11 year-period spent outside Jordan) now living with her husband/cousin, in Jordan.
