Hypocrisy, Zoabi and 180 of her adoring faithful in Richmond - by David Collier

...every banner that gets waved over this cause, every dollar that gets spent, every march that is made, is effort that is missing from a far worthier, far more honest cause. All those fools that stood and applauded this speech, that spend their time helping the Arabs of Gaza and Ramallah to waste another generation on a pointless conflict. Those that actually believe Zoabi needs their help. These people have had their attention taken away from people elsewhere who really do need their help.

22 January 2017. I am at an event organised by the Richmond Palestine Solidarity Campaign. A big crowd, perhaps 180, have gathered to hear Israeli Arab member of the Knesset Haneen Zoabi speak. The room is full, but the demographic breakdown is simple. A large majority are white, British and over 55. It is the typical PSC crowd.

Haneen Zoabi had received a standing ovation at the PSC annual general meeting just two days before, she receives one here before she has even spoken. I am in the presence of PSC royalty.

The situation with the Arabs of Israel is complex. If Zoabi was here to fight for the Israeli Arab citizens, she would have my attention. If her aim was to improve the living standards, education and employment prospects of those who voted her into power, she would have my support. If the real goal was to reduce the inequality that minorities often experience, I’d wave a flag in her name. But Zoabi is not here to represent the needs of Israel’s minorities, she is here to perpetuate the external conflict.

When speaking of the democratic freedoms of a minority group Zoabi comments thus: “We want the opposite. Give us our land back. Give us our homeland back. Give us our people back. We don’t want to scream, we don’t need this freedom of expression”. This, as the entire Middle East burns in radical Islamic bush fires around her.

NY Times covers for supporter of Jewish peace activist’s killer - by Stephen M. Flatow

...There are so many troubling elements to this episode. There is the disturbing specter of an Arab Knesset member exploiting her parliamentary immunity to endorse terrorists. There is the grotesquely misleading coverage by the New York Times. And then there is the perplexing indifference of many American Jews. U.S. Jewish organizations—especially Richard Lakin’s old friends in J Street and Americans for Peace Now—should be speaking out loudly against those who praise Richard’s killer. Why are they silent?

Israel’s parliament this week took action in response to an Arab Knesset member’s public support of a terrorist who murdered an American-Jewish peace activist.

But if you read the account by New York Times correspondent Isabel Kershner, you wouldn’t know anything about the terrorist or his victim—all you would learn is that Israel’s rulers are suppressing dissent and might be infected by “budding fascism.”

It’s as if Kershner and her editors are living in some kind of alternative universe, in which Israel is always guilty, Arab extremists are always innocent, and the 141 Americans who have been murdered by Palestinian terrorists simply don’t exist.

The current controversy began in February, when Haneen Zoabi and two other Arab Knesset Members (all from the Balad Party) paid a solidarity visit to ten families of Palestinian terrorists who were involved in recent attacks. One was the father of Baha Alyan.

For those who don’t recognize Alyan’s name, let me refresh your memory.

NY Times Again Downplays Incitement as Zoabi Calls for New "Intifada"

Not long after extremist Knesset member Haneen Zoabi called for Palestinian lone-wolf stabbings to be expanded into a new intifada, the New York Times claimed that she and her fellow Arab MKs have "opposed" violence.

Haneen Zoabi, the outspoken and incendiary Israeli-Arab parliamentarian, has not hesitated to inflame the Palestinian public, not least by joining the chorus of Palestinian leaders falsely claiming that Israel intends to do harm to the al Aqsa Mosque. The idea that Israel has designs on the mosque, a sacred Muslim shrine that rests atop the Temple Mount, Judaism's holiest site, has been at the center of anti-Jewish violence in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Israel.

"There is no way to prevent them from taking al-Aqsa other than to struggle," Zoabi exclaimed only weeks before escalation of violence that has led to the current wave of stabbing attacks targeting Israelis. (Zoabi couples her calls to action with demands for religious exclusion and historical revisionism: The Temple Mount is "for Muslims only," she recently said, adding that there is no proof Jewish temples ever existed on the Mount.)

Since her call for "struggle" to defend the mosque from the Jews, the radical Knesset member has been more explicit in urging violence, telling a Hamas newspaper that the lone-wolf stabbing should be expanded into a full-fledged "intifada."

It was bewildering, then, to see the New York Times suggest that Zoabi and her colleagues have expressed opposition to the attacks. "Arab members of the Knesset … say they oppose violence by Israel's Arab citizens," reporter Isabel Kershner claimed. The sweeping statement might be true of some Arab members of Knesset, or even most. But it is not true of Zoabi.

In a statement to Hamas's Al Resala newspaper, Zoabi warned that "individual actions," a reference to stabbing attacks by Palestinians, would "dwindle" unless they the Palestinian masses also mobilize against Israel:

Zoabi clarified that what is going on now is individual actions and that what our people need is a popular mobilization. She stressed that the popular struggle is the only one that can mobilize the people and help the people. And that the popular mobilization is the one that can paralyze the normal situation [in Israel]. She warned that in case the individual mobilization continues as is without a popular mobilization, the outbursts will dwindle down within a few days. She pointed out that the coming out of thousands of the people will turn the incidents into a real popular intifada and will be a strategic turning point regarding the Palestinian cause.

There isn't a person in Israel or the West Bank who doesn't understand what "intifada" means in the context of the Israeli-Arab conflict. The violent unrest that Palestinians referred to as the first intifada involved thousands of Molotov Cocktails and stoning attacks, as well as shootings and rioting that resulted in widespread death and destruction. The second intifada's trademark was the Palestinian suicide bombings that tore apart Israeli buses, cafes, and crowded markets. So Zoabi's exhortation to begin a new intifada is not a statement "opposing" violence. It is a call to violence.

Haneen Zoabi’s none-too-concealed subtext

...Zoabi feigns innocence as a promoter of democracy. Her bottom line is that Israel’s disappearance as a Jewish state is democracy’s praiseworthy, progressive objective. To oppose said objective is undemocratic.

There’s no doubt that Israel is the world’s most liberal and tolerant society even by the yardstick of the truest democracies. It’s hard to envisage a comparable situation where a society in the throes of a cruel war puts up with voices in its own parliament that plainly give succor to the enemy. The question is whether this isn’t tolerance-gone-too-far, especially when cowardly atrocities against children are brazenly condoned and justified.

This is exactly what Balad MK Haneen Zoabi did Tuesday when she asserted on radio that the abductors of three boys on their way home from school aren’t terrorists. Later, after an aggressive showdown in the Knesset with MK Aliza Lavi (Yesh Atid), Zoabi – whose salary we all pay – tried to put things right by explaining on TV that “if I were asked whether to carry out this operation [abduction], I’d have said that it’s not worthwhile and not efficient and therefore I don’t support it. But to accuse them [the abductors] of being the chief culprits – absolutely not.”

Clearly Zoabi couldn’t bring herself to condemn the kidnapping on moral grounds but only took issue with its efficacy. To further clarify things, Zoabi told Iranian TV that “the only terrorist force in the region is Israel.”
However, nothing different should have been expected of her. She reacts in precisely the same pattern to every terrorist outrage. After the 2012 tour bus bombing in Burgas Bulgaria, in which five Israelis and their local driver were burned to death, she insisted in an interview on Channel 10 that “Israel is not a victim, not even when civilians are killed.”

Zoabi indeed is an old hand at skewing the truth and championing terrorism.

Knesset Member Haneen Zoabi's Incitement

It sounded quite unthinkable, but Knesset member Haneen Zoabi (Balad) blamed Israel for the recent slaying of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria. “Israel is not a victim, not even when civilians are killed,” she declared in an interview with Channel 10.

Zoabi elaborated: “Israel’s policy of occupation is at fault. If there was no occupation, no repression and no blockade, then this wouldn’t have happened.”

Her comments failed to rouse furor among the Israeli public, which has grown inured to brazen provocation from Arab MKs bankrolled by Israeli taxpayers. Our local media reported the story, but on the whole abstained from comment.

Zoabi’s rationalization of mass murder went right under the radar of the international community. We need only imagine the ferocious maelstrom had an Israeli parliamentarian dared hint that indiscriminately murdering Palestinian tots, their mothers, fathers and all other Arab civilians is tolerable because they have it coming.

The pandemonium would be nothing less than horrific, as would the bad press tarnishing the Israeli collective.

But this sentiment sounded by an Arab Israeli not only excites no censure, it is probably received sympathetically abroad. It is the very spurious narrative that overseas opinion-molders accept, cultivate and disseminate.

Haneen Zouabi should be banned like Meir Kahane

(A number of excellent points)

It’s the same old strategy:

Throw rocks at Jews, fire rockets at them, beat them with clubs, even shoot them. Push them, provoke them. Then, either they ‘exercise restraint’ or fight back. In the former case you’ve humiliated them, maybe hurt or killed some at no cost. In the latter, you cry ‘disproportionate force’, ‘collective punishment’, ‘state terrorism’, or whatever.

You win, either way. The only difference is the mood of the big demonstration afterwards.

This works in politics as well as in the street or on the high seas. Take Haneen Zouabi, the first female Arab member of Israel’s Knesset. In 2009, she generated excitement by indicating that she welcomed the development of an Iranian bomb, seeing more danger in Israel’s nuclear capability (Daniel Pipes called her “Iran’s Representative in the Knesset“).

Next, she sailed on the recent Turkish blockade-running flotilla, on the Mavi Marmara, the ship on which Turkish thugs tried to beat Israeli commandos to death. In interviews, Zouabi claimed that the ‘activists’ on the ship had no plans for violence, but video footage shows her standing next to Turks holding clubs and iron bars.
