People love to say that Gaza “the most densely populated place on Earth" but...

...There is no excuse, therefore, for Gazans to wallow in their misery other than the possibility that it serves their interest to do so, apparently more than it would have served their interest to make the Gaza Strip the Middle East Riviera (similar to how Lebanon used to be the Switzerland of the Middle East). Gaza – how I look forward to the day when you will emulate those places on Earth that are more densely populated than you are!

Gaza can only wish to be like the other densest world regions among which it is classified!

The lies about Gaza continue to be reiterated ad nauseum on the social media and even in reputable news outlets. This short piece contradicts these lies.

First Lie: Gaza is the densest place on Earth.

People seem to love to say that Gaza, with its 1.8 million people on 365 square kilometers, is “the most densely populated place on Earth”. Yet, a simple Google search would have shown this to be untrue. Dense it may be, but it is 6th densest and not the most dense. Words matter. Accuracy matters. Just wait a moment before you bite my head off, telling me that there is little difference between the most dense and 6th most dense.

(As this discussion just came up again the other day, a re-post of an oldie but goodie, plus the video from Elder is hard to beat. Enjoy!)

Some people will tell you that Gaza is the most crowded place on earth. Actually, Tel Aviv is much more densely populated than Gaza.

The first modern Hebrew city, not quite 100 years old, has already managed to cram almost 400,000 residents into its 51.8 square kilometers. This makes Tel Aviv more densely populated than Hong Kong or Singapore, which in turn are much more crowded than Gaza. (A note on comparative crowding appears below, at the end of this post.)

How Crowded is Gaza?

Like almost everyone who has written about the Arab-Israeli conflict, I've described Gaza as one of the most densely populated places on earth. It's one of those "media facts" that get mindlessly repeated because it has been printed so many times it seems true, like it's the sort of thing everybody just knows.

Maybe it's time to lay this one to rest.

UPDATE: Martin Kramer has more, including interesting visiual comparisons of Gaza to New York, Paris, and London.

Gaza on New York.jpg

1.5 million people live in Gaza. How many more millions do you suppose live in the Gaza-sized space in New York shown above?
