...In short, the Middle East is regarded as a nursery that must be handled as if they are a bunch of kids by the more mature and knowing adults of the West, with Obama as the father and the others playing the part of the mother....This situation apparently satisfies the Arab (and Iranian) children, but I do hope they wake up soon to realize that they are not anyone’s kids but fully grown adults capable of deciding what is truly best for them. Perhaps they will see that their best interests are probably not far different from those of their sibling, Israel.

In a previous post I showed that James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, predicted two months ago that UNSC Resolution 2334 would happen.

In that same article, after a litany of complaints against Netanyahu’s arrogant misbehaviour toward Obama, Zogby finally makes it clear how Israel is truly regarded by Obama. He does this while talking about the reaction he expects from Israel following the predicted UNSC resolution:

As long as the U.S. allows this pattern to continue, the spoiled child will take advantage of the situation — taunting, acting out, and getting his way. [emphasis mine]

And:

Israel will throw a tantrum (as spoiled children are wont to do).

So, if Israel is the spoiled child, then the adults need to keep us in line.

Is Israel a spoiled child because of Netanyahu? Those who do not like Bibi would probably answer in the affirmative. I do not agree. I think if even the most appeasing Israeli prime minister were to balk at obeying an Obama diktat, he or she would end up being treated like a child.

In a recent 2010 Arab Public Opinion Poll conducted by Zogby International and the University of Maryland for the Brookings Institution one can get a glimpse of Arab opinion in the so-called moderate countries of Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Included in the findings are the following points:

Arab views hopeful about the Obama administration policy in the Middle East declined from 51 to 16 percent between 2009 and 2010, while those discouraged rose from 15 to 63 percent,

Those thinking Israel is a huge threat is at 88 percent (down slightly from 95 percent in 2008)

The idea that the United States is the main threat to Arab countries and societies declined from 88 percent under President George W. Bush to 77 percent under President Obama

The Iranian threat grew from 7 percent in 2008 to 13 percent in 2009 and down to 10 percent in 2010.

Asked which foreign leader is most admired, almost 70 percent name an Islamist or a supporter of extremist forces. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan received endorsement from 20 percent, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez 13 percent, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad 12 percent, Hezballah's Hassan Naarallah 9 percent, Syrian President Bahar al Assad 7 percent and Osama bin Laden 6 percent.

Several conclusions emerge:

Can You Handle The Truth?: Poll Shows The Shocking Reality of Arab Public Opinion

This is one of those stories about the Middle East that is totally amazing but not the least bit surprising. What, you ask, do I mean? From the standpoint of the way the region is portrayed in the West this information is incredible but if you understand the area it is exactly what you’d expect.

I’m referring here to the recent 2010 Arab Public Opinion Poll conducted by Zogby International and the University of Maryland for the Brookings Institution. Note that this poll was only done in relatively moderate countries: Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates,

Here are some of the main findings:

--Arab views "hopeful" about the Obama Administration policy in the Middle East declined from 51 to 16 percent between 2009 and 2010, while those "discouraged" rose from 15 to 63 percent. Why? Because while the Obama Administration tried to flatter Arabs and Muslims, go all-out to support the Palestinians, distanced themselves from Israel, and took other steps it was not deemed sufficient.

Nothing the United States did would persuade the audience because of such factors as: different ideologies and ambitions, clashes of interest, the filter of government and Islamist propaganda, and excessively high demands. While the populations are "discouraged" with the administration largely due to their radicalism, the regimes are unhappy with it because they feel the U.S. government isn't strong enough in opposing such enemies as revolutionary Islamism and Iran.

Still, unless U.S. policy comes to resemble that of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, or Jordan, many or most Arabs will continue to be bitter and angry. Obama’s levels of support among Arabs are not that different from those of his predecessor.

--What about perceptions of threat? Same story. Those thinking Israel is a huge threat is at 88 percent (down slightly from 95 percent in 2008) showing that overall hostility just doesn’t go away. Do you think that any conceivable Israeli policy would change this fact?
