“The whole world is watching” is a phrase that has been chanted by protesters since at least the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Now, the newly arrived New York Times bureau chief in Jerusalem, or his editors, have inserted a variation of it into a front-page New York Times dispatch from the Jerusalem suburb of Ma’ale Adumim. Reports the Times, in a formulation that stretches the constraints of journalistic convention to well beyond their breaking point:
