Tremendous excitement gripped the Israeli media, especially for those on the left side of the political map, on Friday evening. A moment of satisfaction after years of frustration. In a Channel 2 interview, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said, in English, that he does not intend to return to Safed, his hometown. The home of the kabbalists, Safed will have to give up its celebrity elite. What does Abbas really have to look for in Safed anyway? He would not get accepted to the Bar-Ilan University's medical school, located in Safed, because credibility and integrity are an essential part of the entrance examinations. Abbas would have trouble dancing with the Breslov Hasidim in the town to their tune "Those who believe are not afraid." Although Abbas is quite an acrobat, he would definitely be fearful. Buying a house in the Old City of Safed is difficult anyway due to the high prices.

Scholarly media commentators, who usually view reality according to their desires instead of objective truth, sounded trumpets when Abbas implied that he would give up the Palestinians' right of return to Israel. It was a true holiday for celebrants of the Left. After all, they have been saying for years that Israel is the obstacle to peace and that the Palestinians are merciful descendants of Mother Theresa. After a few hours, however, the party ended. Abbas explained exactly what he means when he uses the expression "1967 borders:" the first step in drawing an internationally recognized border for Jews — along the Mediterranean coast.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren of 1948 refugees will never give up the right of return; they are the true believers and dream of this return. Ariel, Beit El, Shilo, Karnei Shomron and Otniel don't interest them. They want to go back to Khirbet Azzun (Raanana), Sheikh Munis (Ramat Aviv) and Wadi Khanin (Nes Ziona). Of course this is only a partial list. For refugees, according to Arab tradition, there is plenty of time and patience; unlike the Jews, they aren't rushing anywhere.

There is no Arab leader, and certainly not a Palestinian one, who can give up the right of return. The belief in the right of return has allowed people to survive for decades of living in refugee camps. Refugees have lived a life of humiliation, as Arab leaders are reluctant to destroy the camps and rehabilitate the residents.

I have great respect for a public that is not willing to give up its claim to the right of return. The struggle between the Hebrews and the Ishmaelites over the right of ownership in Israel is thousands of years old. We read about it in the Torah portions read during this time of year. The winner of the battle for the right to live in Israel will be the one who doesn't tire, who has the strength of mind and body to pay the price for freedom. Unfortunately, I have recognized fatigue for 20 years already in Israeli leftist circles. This fatigue brought upon us the depressing Oslo Accords.

Israel's good fortune is that most citizens have already realized that the prophecies of the Left are lies. A large majority of Israeli citizens are willing to carry the burden of our ancient national freedom and the rebuilding of our homeland after thousands of years in exile. Only when our enemies internalize that we will never go away because this is where we were born, and that longing for our homeland was the well of our strength throughout our years of seemingly endless wanderings, forced conversion and genocide, then there will be a chance for peace. So long as the Palestinians find, through the generosity of our media, that we are weak and feebleminded, we will continue to be forced to live by the sword.
