A Letter of Redemption to Jonathan

Jonathan Pollard: 8669 days in prison

Rabbi Shmuel Yaniv, a well-known Torah scholar, author, poet and expert on Torah Codes is the chief Rabbi of Givat Shmuel (a city not far from Tel Aviv). His talent as a writer and poet are readily evident in the original Hebrew version of the letter that he recently wrote to Jonathan Pollard (see copy following the English text below).

For those who cannot read the original Hebrew, here is a less poetic, but reasonably good translation:

To our Dear Brother, Redeemer of Israel, Jonathan Pollard:

With a heart bursting with love, like a lioness watching over her cubs, with deep devotion, I write these words to you.

I look upon you as a giant of a man, a hero who brought redemption to our Nation from the threat of Saddam Hussein, the cancer of Satan. Every adult and child in Israel and throughout the Jewish world recognizes and appreciates your selfless courage. Your virtue is enormous. Other leaders may rise and fall, but remembrance of your deeds shall endure forever in the hearts and minds of the Jewish people, from generation to generation, until coming of the final Redeemer. This is especially so since your actions were done out of purity and love, infused with the power of devotion and self-sacrifice.

I imagine how difficult it must be for you, a righteous man, to endure the humiliation of imprisonment and the badge of shame bestowed upon you by the American justice system. But you must know, dear praiseworthy and distinguished brother, that G-d's judgment is exactly the opposite. The day will yet come that true justice shall be meted out, measure for measure, and according to your merit you shall receive what you truly deserve. About you, it is written, “The high ones shall fall and the lowly ones shall be raised up.”

It is distressing that the hand that writes these words, and other hands as well, have no power to lighten the cruel and unusual punishment that has been inflicted upon you nor to mitigate the evil that was done to you.

You, you who saved others—you are condemned as criminal?!
You should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, instead you are afflicted ignobly!

Remain strong, Jonathan the valiant and the righteous; remain resolute in order to strengthen us as well. Our eyes remain fixed upon you as we pray for you in all our synagogues. We, too, are humiliated by your incarceration especially when we see and hear about what a pure and noble soul you are. We are deeply touched that to this day you still have our best interests at heart and you continue to judge us favorably despite our powerlessness and inability to help you….

To you, our wonderful brother, we wish full freedom and a complete redemption in good health. May we merit to see your speedy return to Zion with great joy!

בלב הומה אהבה, כלביאה המבקשת את טובת בניה, בהתלהבות רבה,
אני רושם לך מילים אלו.
אני מביט בך, כעל ענק המעניק את הגאולה לעמינו מאיום סדאם סרטן השטן.
כל מבוגר וילד בישראל ובעולם היהודי, מכיר ומוקיר בזאת את גבורתך העצומה.
מעלתך היא מדהימה. מנהיגים יעלו ואחרים ירדו, אבל זכרך לא ימוש מהלב מדור לדור, עד בוא הגואל, ובייחוד שמעשיך נעשו בטהרה ובאהבה, והיו בעוצמה של מסירות נפש.

משער אני כי קשה לך ביותר לחיות בכלא בהשפלה בהיותך צדיק, ובמשפט אזרחי אמריקאי גזרו עליך קלון. אבל דע לך אחינו הדגול, כי המשפט האלוקי הוא קוטבי, ובו יבוא הצדק ביחס למעלותיך, עליך נאמר: "עליונים למטה ותחתונים למעלה".

נראה שאין ביד המכתב הזה ואחרים, להקל מעליך את העוול הנורא באכזריותו.
אתה שהצלת – דנים אותך כפושע?!
אתה הוא שצריך היה לקבל פרס נובל לשלום, מדוע גורמים לך לנבול?!

תתעצם יהונתן הגיבור והצדיק ברוח גדולה לחזקנו, שכן עיני כל נשואות אליך, ולכן אנו מתפללים עליך בכל בתי הכנסיות. גם אותנו משפיל ביותר מאסרך, ובייחוד שאנו רואים ושומעים איזה נפש זכה ואצילה לך, שאתה עוד היום דן אותנו לכף זכות למרות אוזלת ידינו, ובכל דרך אתה מבקש את טובתנו...

מאחל אני לך אחי הנפלא, לזכות להגיע לחירות ולגאולה השלימה בבריאות טובה, ונזכה במהרה לראותך שב לציון ברינה.
