Liberating Our Jerusalem - by Daniel Greenfield

Yom Yerushalayim is a reminder of what the real problem is and what the real solution is. Muslim occupation of Israel is the problem. The Islamization of Jerusalem is the problem. Muslim violence in support of the Muslim occupation of Israel and of everywhere else is the problem. Israel is the solution. Only when we liberate ourselves from the lies, when we stop believing that we are the problem and recognize that we are the solution. Only then will the liberation that began in 1967 be complete.

When Jordan's Arab Legion seized half of Jerusalem, ethnically cleansed its Jewish population and annexed the city-- the only entity to recognize the annexation was the United Kingdom which had provided the officers and the training that made the conquest possible. Officers like Colonel Bill Newman, Major Geoffrey Lockett and Major Bob Slade, under Glubb Pasha, better known as General John Bagot Glubb, whose son later converted to Islam, invaded Jerusalem and used the Muslim forces under their command to make the partition and ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem possible.


The Jews living in the free half of Jerusalem continued to be killed by Jordanian Muslim snipers. The victims of those years of Muslim occupation included Yaffa Binyamin, a 14-year-old girl sitting on the balcony of her own house and a Christian carpenter working on the Notre Dame Convent.

Under Muslim occupation, while Muslim snipers were murdering their children, the Jewish residents living under fire couldn't so much as put in an outhouse without being reported to the UN for illegal construction. In one case a UN observer organization held four meetings to discuss an outhouse for local residents before condemning Israel for illegal construction.

It did not however condemn Jordan when one of its soldiers opened fire on a train wounding a Jewish teenage girl.

Not very much has changed.

The hysterical condemnations of “illegal construction” did not end when the Muslim occupation did. The great outhouse of the United Nations and the smaller outhouses of the foreign ministries of countries whose leaders tremble whenever Muslims grow agitated over a cartoon or a YouTube video fill the air with the vilest of substances whenever a Jewish family moves into a home in Jerusalem.

The Jordanian seizure of these areas in 1948 brought the Jewish presence of thousands of years temporarily to an end with the expulsion and ethnic cleansing of its Jewish population, as well as razing of communal institutions. However 19 years after the Jordanian occupation of Jerusalem, as well as Judea and Samaria, the Jewish people were able to return home. Then, now and forever.

Liberating Our Jerusalem by Daniel Greenfield

...They say that there are three religions in Jerusalem, but there are actually four. The fourth religion is the true Religion of Peace, the one that insists that there will be peace when the Jews have been expelled from Judea and Samaria, driven out of their homes in Jerusalem, and made into wanderers and beggars once again. Oddly enough, this religion's name isn't even Islam-- it's diplomacy.

How does one have "settlements" in a city older than London or Washington D.C.?

...Even as Jews remember the great triumph of Jerusalem Day, the ethnic cleansers and their accomplices are busy searching for ways to drive Jews out of Jerusalem, out of towns, villages and cities. This isn't about the Arab residents of Jerusalem, who have repeatedly asserted that they want to remain part of Israel. It's not about peace, which did not come from any previous round of concessions, and will not come from this one either. It's about solving the Jewish problem.

Since then, the annexation and ethnic cleansing has become an international mandate. It would be inconceivable for the international community to denounce an ethnically cleansed group which survived attempted genocide for moving back into its own city. It is, however, standard policy at the State Department and the Foreign Office to denounce Jews living in those parts of Jerusalem that had been ethnically cleansed by Muslims, as "settlers" living in "settlements," and describe them as an "obstruction to peace." Peace being the state of affairs that sets in when an ethnic cleansing goes unchallenged.

Describing Jewish homes in Jerusalem, one of the world's oldest cities, a city that all three religions in the region associate with Jews and Jewish history, as "settlements" is a triumph of distorted language that Orwell would have to tip his hat to. How does one have "settlements" in a city older than London or Washington D.C.? To understand that, you would have to ask London and Washington D.C. where the diplomats insist that one more round of Israeli compromises will bring peace.

The Old City of Jerusalem: The Crowning Glory - by Dror Eydar

...As long as Jerusalem was just a dream or a longing, we were satisfied with missing it, even during the first 19 years of the state, when its heart was walled off. But from the time we were privileged to liberate the city and apply our sovereignty to it, we must not let it slip from our hands. Giving up Jerusalem, heaven forbid, would hurt the entire historic process of the return to Zion. Because there is no Zionism without Zion, and just as there is no Zionism without the land of Israel, there is certainly no meaning to us returning to the land of Israel without the city that held us up in the desert of the nations through our oath to remember it and whose name brought us home.

In the end, it all comes down to Jerusalem. We can talk about "two states" and "diving the country" and "an end to the occupation" (of course, of course) -- but eventually Jerusalem will rear its head. The same old bunch, which for 49 years has been tempting us to bid farewell to the land of our life, needs to give an answer about what it suggests we do about Jerusalem. Not Issawiya or Beit Safafa‎ or all the rest, but the four quarters of the Old City, including the City of David, which lies south of the Temple Mount and outside the current wall.

"Ask for the peace of Jerusalem," the poet commanded in Psalms (122:6). Ask the devotees of division what they think should be done about the city whose memory brought us here. Anyone who isn't willing to share it with strangers in effect forgoes whatever purpose there might be to diplomatic negotiations. No Arab will agree to any peace plan without full Muslim control of east Jerusalem. The idea of internationalizing the city; dividing it into quarters; sharing control, with the Jews in charge below and the Muslims in charge on top of the Mount, are mere chatter -- fairy dust and daydreams of Western countries and some (few) Israeli Jews.

Don't let those of us who want to pull the wool over people's eyes talk about "dividing the country" -- get straight to the cherry on the icing: the Old City of Jerusalem. Even if the Romans could make the name of the land of Israel and Judea vanish from world memory starting from the second century C.E. by calling it "Palestina" after the seafaring Philistine people who had disappeared from here hundreds of years earlier, their plot to erase Jerusalem and rename it "Aelia Capitolina" didn't succeed. To the regret of our enemies and those among us who deny the redemption, more than 1,900 years have passed, and the world still calls the heart of our nation "Jerusalem." Even the Muslims, who are fighting to rewrite the history of the city and deny our ties to it, are forced to refer to it as "Al-Quds," as an acronym for "Beit al-Maqdis" (Home of the Temple) and in doing so reveal the lie they are seeking to spread.

In honor of the 49th Jerusalem Day, which marks the city's liberation and its unification with its legal sons and daughters, yet another of the thousand "peace conferences" convened in Paris to "cast lots" upon Jerusalem (Obadiah 1:10). It's been nearly 100 years since the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which mapped out the Middle East and is now collapsing before our eyes, and the French and other nations are trying to revert to that historic march of folly.

Many years ago, the indefatigable MK Geulah Cohen told the story of how late Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir extended his hand to a Jewish girl from Ethiopia who had just gotten off the airplane, and asked her name. The girl simply responded: "Jerusalem."

Shamir was soon surprised to learn that many other Ethiopian girls shared her name. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak felt the same way, when in the spring of 1991 -- during Operation Solomon, when he was IDF Chief of Staff -- he asked the elderly Malka Azaria, her skin deeply wrinkled as she stood dressed in white, how long she had been waiting to come to Israel: "2,500 years, since the destruction of the first Temple," was her reply.

On Sunday, when celebrities and public figures spoke about Jerusalem Day with contempt, and my heart ached as they yearned for a "small and divided Jerusalem," I thought perhaps they could learn a thing or two from the Jews of Ethiopia.

For 19 years, the city of Jerusalem was divided, until a miracle of great kindness reunited us 49 years ago with the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Mount of Olives and the Rachel's Tomb. Over the years, we resettled the Old City, from which we had been exiled. We rebuilt the synagogues that had been burned. How a BBC World Service News bulletin misled on Jerusalem Day

...Were the BBC to expand its news gathering beyond one Israeli newspaper of a specific political stripe and beyond inadequately introduced representatives of political NGOs of a particular genre, the accuracy and impartiality of its reports on events in Israel would of course be vastly improved. However, as this example of a supposedly factual item in a news bulletin once more indicates, the BBC’s reliance upon sources promoting a distinct political view defines, restricts and shapes the objectivity and accuracy of information passed on to audiences worldwide.

Those who happened to be listening to the BBC World Service at 2 a.m. GMT on May 18th will have heard the following item in the news bulletin (from 03:40, available for a limited period of time only) read by Fiona MacDonald.World Service

“Israeli police have clashed with Palestinians protesting against a march by Jewish nationalists to mark Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in 1967. Palestinians threw stones as Israelis bearing flags marched through the predominantly Muslim old walled city. A Palestinian activist, Ahmad SubLaban, said the march was a provocation.

[voiceover] During the march the Old City gets closed and its residents are forbidden from entering or leaving. They say that day for them feels like a prison, keeping them inside their houses. They’re forbidden to go in and out of the Old City. They’re also attacked; some of their properties are destroyed. The shopkeepers are forced to close their stores.”

The Israeli prime minister said Jerusalem would always be the capital for the Jewish people alone.”

MacDonald is of course describing Jerusalem Day or Yom Yerushalayim – the national holiday marking the reunification of the city after nineteen years of division due to the occupation by Jordan between 1948 and 1967. That context is glaringly absent from her distorted description of the purpose of the event.

Among the numerous events taking place on May 17th to mark the occasion was the traditional march to the Western Wall, which for geographical reasons obviously has to pass through what MacDonald bizarrely finds necessary to describe as “the predominantly Muslim old walled city”.

Not unrelated to the content and style of this news item is the fact that this year, two political NGOs unsuccessfully petitioned the High Court in an attempt to prevent the march (now in its thirtieth year) from passing through the Old City’s Muslim Quarter. One of the political NGOs which filed the rejected petition was the foreign funded Ir Amim.

One of Ir Amim’s employees is Ahmad SubLaban – apparently the same inadequately introduced man given a platform by the BBC World Service from which to promote political propaganda.

...I do not miss the old Jerusalem, split in half with walls and barbed-wire fences; the Jordanian Legionnaires pointing their snipers at Jews from the high walls; the besieged Mt. Scopus; the faltering, "far away" city, blocked from three sides and facing Tel Aviv. I prefer to walk through the alleys of the Jewish quarter instead of hearing stories about them; to pray at the Western Wall instead of climbing on rooftops to glimpse it from afar; and to mend the cracks in today's Jerusalem rather than live in the old, divided Jerusalem.

Reaffirming Our Commitment on Yom Yerushalayim

...We did not conquer a foreign land. We returned to the cradle of our lives, to Zion and to Jerusalem. A person who returns to his home cannot be considered an occupier. This is not mere terminology. We liberated the city from a long line of occupiers -- the latest of which were the Jordanians -- who were abusive and hostile toward us and our rights for many generations. When we rejoice today and raise the national flag, when we sing "Jerusalem of Gold," we will remember the words of Nathan Alterman, that justice lies with us, and we will not let the devil twist our minds.

Happy holiday, fellow Jews; today we celebrate Jerusalem Day.

This is a wonderful opportunity to clarify a few things we can be happy about. This is a day to mark the great joy, not tragedy -- despite what a few professional lamenters might say -- that came with the return to our historical home of Jerusalem, the most holy of our sites. The 200,000 Jews residing in Jerusalem beyond the distorted, outdated border lines are not an obstacle to peace, but an obstacle to re-division. Many of this city's residents, Jews and Arabs, not only feel that dividing Jerusalem is not a "solution," it is a surefire recipe for chaos and increased hostilities.

For 364 days out of the year, we discuss the best and worst courses of action, what should and should not be done in Jerusalem. But on this one day, the day the city was liberated, it is befitting to pay homage to our own sense of justice, to cast a steady eye outward and inward, and to heed the essence of the Torah's teachings. In the spirit of the historian Ben-Zion Dinur: The Arabs have full rights in Jerusalem, but no rights over Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is the embodiment of Jewish justice. It is the strongest collective memory we have as a people. It has been present in our lives for 2,000 years, in our prayers, celebrations, days of mourning, religious ceremonies, songs. It has been part of our unyielding longing. It was and still is one of the clearest markers of Jewish identity, if you will -- the true law, unwritten, that defines Israel as the home of the Jewish people.

Many years ago, Menachem Begin posited that Jerusalem defended Israel more profoundly than Israel defended Jerusalem. He was right, but his diagnosis was only a partial one. Throughout all the years of our exile, Jerusalem indeed functioned as the glue unifying the Jews dispersed throughout the Diaspora.

But when we returned, too many of us began to lose our bond with the city. More importantly, we began to forget our obligation to Jerusalem.

...During the War of Independence in 1948, amid endless efforts to fight for Jerusalem at the expense of other fronts, David Ben-Gurion said: "The value of Jerusalem is not measurable; it cannot be weighed or counted. Because if land can have a soul, then Jerusalem is the soul of the Land of Israel and the war for Jerusalem is infinitely important, not just militarily. "Jerusalem demands, and deserves, to have us stand up for it. The oath 'by the rivers of Babylon' is as relevant today as it was back then. Otherwise, we will not be worthy of the name Israel," he declared.

1. It is fascinating that of all Israel's noteworthy days of remembrance and of thanks fall in the Jewish month of Iyar. Iyar is traditionally regarded as the month of strength and courage. The State of Israel was declared at the start of Iyar and Jerusalem was liberated at the end of Iyar. In between we mark the Bar Kokhba Revolt -- 1,813 years passed between the time we lost our independence in 135 C.E. and the time we reclaimed it in 1948. Nineteen years passed between the time the State of Israel was established and the time we could march through the gates of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Israelites underwent a similar process as a fledgling people: The Israelite tribes that entered Canaan at the end of the 13th century B.C.E. waited hundreds of years before King David conquered Jerusalem and King Solomon erected the First Temple. Our lengthy historical journey is dichotomous, comprising two aspects: the national nucleus and the spiritual nucleus; fate and destiny; body and soul; Israel and Jerusalem.

The Arabs understand that the battle over this land, and the Jewish presence in it, begins and ends in Jerusalem. The Palestinian Authority and the Muslim world invest enormous efforts into perpetuating a false narrative suggesting that Jerusalem has always been Muslim, and that the man who built Al-Aqsa mosque 4,000 years ago was none other than Abraham. This narrative is not only prevalent among Islamists. During a recent conversation with Israeli Arab MK Jamal Zahalka, a self-proclaimed atheist, he refused to acknowledge the historical fact that there was ever a Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount. After I pressed him, he conceded that acknowledging this fact would "serve the occupation" or "colonialism," as he put it. Arab leaders always add the adjective "al-mazoum" -- meaning make-believe or false -- when making any mention of the existence of a Jewish Temple.

Every time you hear this argument, tell whoever made it that in 1924, the Supreme Muslim Council (headed by Haj Amin al-Husseini, who later collaborated with Hitler against the Jews) published an English-language guide to the Temple Mount. In this guide, it said: "The site is one of the oldest in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest times. Its identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to universal belief, on which 'David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings' (2 Samuel 24:25)."

Today, the 28th day of the month of Iyar, (May 28), 100s of Jews, (and 100s of tourists), ascended the Temple Mount to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem and the liberation of the Temple Mount, on June 7th, 1967.



The Muslim Waqf did their best to dampen our joy and chase the Jews from the Mount, and although the police did close the Mount to non-Muslims mid-morning, it was only after 100s of Jews ascended.

The children of Israel have rediscovered the Temple Mount, the place of the Holy Temple. Each day, each week brings 100s and 1000s of more Jews to the Temple Mount. Jerusalem is the Holy Temple, and the Holy Temple is Jerusalem. With joy and determination, and with G-d's help, we will rebuild the Holy Temple.

Jerusalem Day, the real problem and what the real solution is

...Even as Jews remember the great triumph of Jerusalem Day, the ethnic cleansers and their accomplices are busy searching for ways to drive Jews out of Jerusalem, out of towns, villages and cities. This isn't about the Arab residents of Jerusalem, who have repeatedly asserted that they want to remain part of Israel. It's not about peace, which did not come from any previous round of concessions, and will not come from this one either. It's about solving the Jewish problem.

When Jordan's Arab Legion seized half of Jerusalem, ethnically cleansed its Jewish population and annexed the city-- the only entity to recognize the annexation was the United Kingdom which had provided the officers and the training that made the conquest possible. Officers like Colonel Bill Newman, Major Geoffrey Lockett and Major Bob Slade, under Glubb Pasha, better known as General John Bagot Glubb, whose son later converted to Islam, invaded Jerusalem and used the Muslim forces under their command to make the partition and ethnic cleansing of Jerusalem possible.

Since then the annexation and ethnic cleansing has become an international mandate. It would be absolutely inconceivable for the international community to denounce an ethnically cleansed group which survived attempted genocide for moving back into a city where they had lived. It is however standard policy at the State Department and the Foreign Office to denounce Jews living in those parts of Jerusalem that had been ethnically cleansed by Muslims, as "settlers" living in "settlements", and describe them as an "obstruction to peace." Peace being the state of affairs that sets in when an ethnic cleansing goes unchallenged.

Describing Jewish homes in Jerusalem, one of the world's oldest cities, a city that all three religions in the region associate with Jews and Jewish history, as "settlements" is a triumph of distorted language that Orwell would have to dip his hat to. How does one have "settlements" in a city older than London or Washington D.C.? To understand that you would have to ask London and Washington D.C. where the diplomats insist that one more round of Israeli compromises will bring peace to the region.
