...The ploy for a while worked beyond expectations. The term "Palestinians" was used across the world -- including in Israel -- to define the Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza; it is often employed also to describe Arabs with Israeli citizenship. The narrative that the Jews displaced them by establishing a state completely contradicts the facts.

In an op-ed in the Guardian on November 1, 2017, ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas called on the UK to "atone" for the century of "suffering" that the document allegedly wrought on the "Palestinian people." Abbas reiterated the claims he has been making since 2016, to justify a surreal lawsuit he has threatened to bring against Britain for supporting the "creation of a homeland for one people [Jews], which, he asserted, "resulted in the dispossession and continuing persecution of another."

"Palestinians" were the Jews who lived, along with Muslims and Christians on land called Palestine, which was under British administration from 1917 to 1948.

All people born there during the time of the British Mandate had "Palestine" stamped on their passports. But the Arabs were offended when they were called Palestinians. They complained: "We are not Palestinians, we are Arabs. The Palestinians are the Jews".

...The choice is theirs and theirs alone. They just have to decide to re-write their future all by themselves. Do I believe they can do that, or that they even want to? Not very likely, I think. And even if the answer was “yes”, how long would it take me to trust them? A very long time. But I never say never. And the dare stands.

Here is a unique proposal – become the newest indigenous people in the world. In other words, Palestinian Arabs, you can write your own future. I dare you to. Or, you can continue to bask in the attention afforded you as you persist in the victimhood imposed upon you years ago by your fellow Arabs, based upon an imaginary past.

Pro-Palestinians want to see one state “between the river and the sea”; in other words, they want Israel to cease to exist. No-Palestinians deny the Palestinian Arabs the right to define their own identity. I am an Okay-You-Want-To-Be-Palestinian-But Not-Like-That kind of person. If you really want a name that symbolizes subjugation and failure, that is your prerogative; but does it mean you really have to be a failed People?

Hamas minister of interior and national security vents anger at Egypt for not supplying Gaza with adequate fuel. He says Palestinians deserve better, because they wage jihad on behalf of all Muslims. But then he switches gears: “Every Palestinian, in Gaza and throughout Palestine, can prove his Arab roots—whether from Saudi Arabia, from Yemen… Half of the Palestinians are Egyptians and the other half are Saudis.”

The notion of a Palestinian people and Palestinian identity, although taken for granted today, has neither a long nor a distinguished history. Understanding its origins and what it represents explains why the peace process between Israel and the Arabs has failed and will continue to fail.

Inherent in Palestinianism, from its origins, is the rejection of a Jewish state in any form. That opposition is not negotiable and not open to compromise; it is essential.

Palestinianism was never for anything; its raison d'être was to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state. That purpose has never changed.

Concern for Palestine among a few Arab intellectuals, as Columbia University Professor Rashid Khalidi shows in his book on the subject, did not exist until Zionists began settlements at the turn of the century. Most weekly newspapers from that period which he surveyed were not even from Palestine and had scant distribution.

"Palestinian identity" then, as now, was negative, focused entirely on opposition to Zionists rather than a positive self-definition. Arab Palestinian leaders, like the mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husayni, an ardent supporter of the Nazis, and arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat -- both "fathers" of Palestinianism ignored by Khalidi -- rejected Zionism and promoted terrorism.

Hurting Jews trumps helping Arabs, again

The Arab world tells us they care a great deal for the ‘Palestinian people’. But the truth, as I’ve written many times, is that it’s always more important to hurt Jews than to help Arabs — which explains the following:

Palestinian refugees demand basic civil rights
(Beirut, AFP): Thousands of Palestinian refugees gathered yesterday outside UN headquarters in Beirut to demand basic civil rights in Lebanon, such as a choice of jobs and ownership of property…

The Palestinians traveled in buses from Lebanon’s 12 refugee camps for the Beirut gathering organized by Palestinian and Lebanese non-governmental organizations.

“Working is a right,” “We want to live in dignity,” read placards carried by the protesters.

“I have the right to own property,” said another, summing up the frustration of the tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees who live in dire conditions in Lebanon…

The majority of UNRWA-registered refugees live in dire conditions in the camps across and are denied basic civil rights. Under Lebanese law, Palestinian refugees can not own property or hold most white collar jobs (doctors, engineers, lawyers, architects) and are stuck in low-paid employment.

They are also denied social security and medical aid in state hospitals.

There is a long history of similar behavior, even by the Palestinian Arabs’ own leaders. For example, when Israel occupied Gaza and Judea and Samaria after the 1967 war, they almost immediately began programs to move refugees out of the camps and into permanent housing that they would own. But the PLO — and the UN — bitterly opposed it:

What is perhaps surprising is that the United Nations also opposed the program, and passed harsh resolutions demanding that Israel remove the Palestinians from their new homes and return them to the squalid camps.
