Missiles and Mere Words

Hezbollah's stockpile continues to grow.

Gabriel Schoenfeld
The Weekly Standard
10 August '10

Back in April reports surfaced that Syria was shipping long-range Scud missiles to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.Lebanon’s prime minister, Sa’ad Hariri, denied the presence of the weapons on Lebanese territory. Israel issued warnings. UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, denied that any such weapons were in the territory in patrols. The story seemed to fade.

But Aviation Week, one of the most authoritative sources of information on military affairs, reports in its August 9 issue, citing Israeli analysts, that some Scuds are in fact now “in depots in Lebanon.” The same article also sums up the overall missile and rocket picture in some detail:

In Lebanon are 3,000-4,000 medium-range rockets that can fire from both north and south of the Litani River, say Israeli analysts. Additional hundreds of long-range rockets can fire from deep in Lebanon to deep into Israel. Depots of missiles are now located in the Bekaa Valley and south of the Litani with a strategic reserve stashed in Beirut.

Here is Hillary Clinton speaking to the American Jewish Committee about Syrian missile shipments on April 29:

Delivery Systems (1994)

Exploding Suicide Belts for Terrorists: Dry Bones cartoon.
Today's Golden Oldie is from 15 years ago this month. It was drawn in December of 1994.

The subject of the cartoon was the use of "exploding suicide belts" for terrorists. Previously, the danger came from booby-trapped devices and bomb-laden vehicles. The advent of using willing stooges had, as pointed out in the cartoon, certain advantages for the Palestinian Terrorist organizations.

* * *
These days, of course, the IslamoFascists are developing newer delivery systems for their murderous missions. I refer, of course, to the looming threat of Iranian nukes deliverable by Iranian missiles.

The American administration does not seem overly concerned by the situation, except for its worrying about any Israeli move to prevent the attack planned to "wipe Israel off the map".

Fresh Water Source

Hamas and Fresh Water : Dry Bones cartoon.

The world's largest reverse osmosis desalination plant (and a target of Gazan missiles) is in the Ashkelon area. The desalination plantprovides fresh water to Israel and supplies Gaza with its drinking water. The Israeli government plans to build four more plants which will make the country water independent.

The Ashkelon plant has been targeted by Gazan missiles. A Gazan missile hit would hurt Israel but would also stop all the fresh water flow to Gaza. Which, of course, gave me the idea for today's cartoon.

The story of Israel's technological advances in converting sea water to fresh drinking water probably didn't make it to your local newspaper (or the International Media for that matter) but here's a recent piece from Popular Mechanics:

"The Ashkelon Desalination Plant, which opened in 2005, converts more than 26 billion gallons of Mediterranean Sea water into fresh water for the State of Israel each year—5 to 6 percent of total demand. Ashkelon is not only the largest reverse-osmosis desalination plant in the world, it's also one of the few public plants to recover waste heat to improve efficiency and reduce costs." -more

Mideast Peace (1991)

(1991) Dry Bones cartoon: talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
Today's Golden Oldie is a Dry Bones cartoon from 1991.

The bizarre delusion that the Middle East would settle down and be peaceful if only the "Palestinian problem" were solved continues to this day.
Yikes!
