(Video) Moshe Ya'alon on Israel's Security Policy in a Changing Middle East

Washington Institute..
17 June '13..

In the tumultuous Middle East, Lebanese are invading Syria, the Assad regime is calling on Turkey's leader to resign, and more than two years after Mubarak's ouster, Egypt once again finds itself in a constitutional void. Amid this chaos, the direction of regional change is ominous, as Iran may be poised for a strategic victory in Syria while the "moderate" camp sputters on issues of war and peace. These and other factors have left Israel with an especially complex and volatile security environment.

To discuss Israel's security policy in this moment of change and uncertainty, The Washington Institute invited Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon to address a Policy Forum breakfast in Washington, DC.

Moshe "Bogie" Yaalon served for thirty-seven years in the Israel Defense Forces, rising to the position of chief of the general staff. Following his military retirement, he joined the Likud Party, winning election to parliament in 2009 and again this year. After serving as minister of strategic affairs in the previous government, he was named minister of defense in the new coalition government. Between his military and political careers, he served as a distinguished visiting fellow at The Washington Institute, where he authored the study "Lessons from the Palestinian 'War' against Israel" (2007).
