Roth - Long noses and red faces in Tehran

A Reuters report some hours ago quoting the Iranian government-controlled Islamic Republican News Agency said the Iranians reject as "sheer lies" accusations that they were involved in today's bomb attack on the Israeli embassy in India. The Ayatollah-rich regime's ambassador to New Delhi, Mehdi Nabizadeh, said:

"Any terrorist attack is condemned (by Iran) and we strongly reject the untrue comments by an Israeli official. These accusations are untrue and sheer lies, like previous times."

There must have been some back in Tehran's foreign ministry who felt Nabizadeh's denial and straight-faced condemnation of terrorist attacks were insufficiently emphatic. So when Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, spoke out in mid-afternoon blaming Iran for the coordinated attacks today on Israel's missions in India and Georgia, a spokesman in the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ramin Mehmanparast, revealed what had really and truly happened: Israel bombed its own embassies to "tarnish Iran's friendly ties with the host countries".

We're not so sure about those friendly ties with host countries. India is strongly opposed to Iran's nuclear program, supports the presence of NATO forces in Afghanistan over Iran's objections, and a short time ago halted its $12 billion annual oil trade with Iran as part of the global economic sanctions against the Tehran regime. And while the Iranians seem utterly sincere about their rejection of terrorism ("Any terrorist act is condemned..."), their credibility is sort of questioned this evening in a new report released today by MEMRI.

Here's the money line of MEMRI's Arabic-to-English translation of an interview with drenched-in-civilian-blood Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, head of Iran's Lebanese proxy forces. It went to air on Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV on February 7, 2012:

"We receive all possible forms of moral, political, and material support from the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1982. In the past, although we didn't lie about this, we only told half of the truth. We said we have moral support and political support, but when we were asked about material, financial, or military support, we kept silent. We didn't say anything – one way or the other. We didn't want to embarrass our brothers in Iran..."

We also don't want to embarrass the Iranians. They do such a great job of it all on their own.
