A Jerusalem bookshop opens a window onto the West's disturbing support for Palestinian causes.
JERUSALEM — Entering the bookshop at the American Colony Hotel recently, I noted a prominently placed display of four books directly facing the entrance. The books were the first thing seen by any visitor to the shop. They were evidently intended to give a representative sample of the kind of fare available there. They succeeded in this, and in something more.
The American Colony is one of the best hotels in the city, a favored place for European diplomats, journalists, peace processors, and others in the colorful array that the city attracts. While sometimes described as “neutral ground,” it may more accurately be seen as the main stronghold of the international pro-Palestinian presence and sentiment in Jerusalem. It is therefore as good a place as any for assessing that sector of opinion.
The choice of books displayed at the bookshop’s entrance sums up elegantly the main components of the disturbing ethos among supporters of the Palestinians in the West.
The books on display were The Founding Myths of Modern Israel, by Roger Garaudy; Married to another Man: Israel’s dilemma in Palestine, by Ghada Karmi; I Shall Not Hate, by Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish; and The Palestine Papers – the end of the Road?, by Clayton Swisher. Come with me on a brief tour through them. And let’s speak plainly, as the time requires.
Roger Garaudy is a veteran French Communist who later converted to Islam. His book combines Holocaust denial with calls for the destruction of Israel. He marshals the “evidence” assembled by Holocaust deniers over the years to dispute the existence of gas chambers in Nazi death camps. The Holocaust, Garaudy thinks, was a myth intended to create sympathy for the theft of Palestine by the Jews. Hitler’s main enemies were Communists, says Garaudy, and he had no plan for the destruction of the Jews. Garaudy’s book is a straightforward example of Jew hatred of the most vitriolic and extreme type.
Ghada Karmi’s book seeks to refute the idea of Jewish peoplehood. She repeats a number of myths recently revived by anti-Zionist propagandists in the current battle to delegitimize Israel. The claim that Ashkenazi Jews are descended in the main from Turkic “Khazars” is re-aired. This claim, a favorite of anti-Israel propaganda recently restated by Professor Shlomo Sand, is intended to disprove the notion that Ashkenazi Jews descend from Jewish communities originating in ancient Israel. Karmi blithely dismisses as “open to question” recent evidence deriving from thousands of DNA studies that refute these claims. She believes, as she has stated elsewhere, that the Israelis and Palestinians are heading for an apocalyptic “cataclysm,” out of which a Palestinian Arab state will emerge.
Clayton Swisher’s contribution is to argue that there is no basis for a peace process that includes accepting the continued existence of any Jewish state. He argues that recent leaks from the offices of PA chief negotiator Saeb Erekat mark the final demise of the “two state solution.” Swisher argues that it is all Israel’s fault, despite the fact that the leaks show many examples of the opposite. For example, the leaks showed Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressing willingness for concessions including the redivision of Jerusalem and the ceding of 98.7% of the West Bank. Swisher, as he has said elsewhere, favors those Arabs “committed to liberating all of historic Palestine.”
Dr. Abuelaish’s book is a work by a Gaza physician whose three daughters were tragically killed during Operation Cast Lead. They died as IDF troops battled Hamas snipers and mortar teams in the area of Beit Lahiya. There is no reason to believe that Abuelaish shares any of the opinions contained in the other three volumes. But given the overall display, it is reasonable to assume that the store’s goal is to stress Israel as committing war crimes rather than Abuelaish favoring conciliation. Certainly, and unsurprisingly, one would search in vain for any volumes discussing similar losses of civilian life among Israeli Jews.
Here, then, is the display that greets European diplomats, salaried peace processors, and elegant locals meeting in the courtyard and coffee shop, passing or entering the bookshop of the beautiful and peaceful American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem.
Four volumes. One of which, though written by a man of conscience, serves the purpose of describing an instance of Israeli killing of civilians. The other three are united in calling for the destruction of Israel. One of them denies the Holocaust. All of them, in great detail, set about seeking to deny the most basic facts of Jewish history, to ridicule all Jewish concerns deriving from that history, and to make of the Jews a non-people, not to be included in the general mass of humanity but rather to be uniquely singled out in illegitimacy.
This is the ideology behind the flotillas, boycotts, and furious demonstrations against Israel in the year 2011, decades after the Palestinians supposedly accepted Israel’s existence and turned toward seeking a two-state solution. This is the idea behind which Islamists and “progressives” can happily unite. This is the channel through which the familiar and foul substance of antisemitism is going to flow right back into the Western mainstream. Unless it is prevented from doing so.

Re: "In the Heart of Israel, Jew Hatred Is on Full Display" by Jonathan Spyer
ReplyDeleteJonathan Spyer's observations regarding how a premiere Israeli Hotel bookshop is prominently hawking despicably anti-semitic books might seem, at first reading, one more source of pain.
Expressions such as : "oy gevalt", "oy vey" immediately come to mind. And surely in our justifiable anger we ask: "who is the 'nudnik' owner or manager of this prominent hotel bookshop who has (dare I employ the word for the millionth time)- "audacity"- to allow such hateful books to be flaunted with such bravura and apparent impunity before the eyes of visitors to the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem.
Yes- the books, including one that denies the existence of the Holocaust, are certainly offensive on the face of things. And the ever insightful and talented writer, Jonathan Spyer has every right to express his well justified anger in his article: "In the Heart of Israel, Jew Hatred Is on Full Display".
It would seem for a bookshop in such a famous Jerusalem Hotel to behave in this manner is beyond unforgivable- indeed, simply over the top.
But may I point out to Mr. Spyer and his loyal readers that we should not be in too much of a hurry to "kvetch"- at least not get too bent out of shape over this latest apparent insult- especially hurtful naturally, considering that it occurs in the "Heart of Israel".
Actually this ugly incident simply goes to prove something that many people around the world often overlook and even tend to forget- which is highly unfortunate and certainly most unfair- (although we are surely used to that).
That is to say that the incident proves once again, as if it were necessary- just what a very big Heart the State of Israel possesses in its quite modest (in physical dimensions only) size body.
Though Israel is so small, that from outer space this tiny nation seems all but lost in the gargantuan sea of Arab states surrounding her, she is a nation that is all Heart, all Soul, all Generosity (witness beating the entire world in setting up an emergency 'medical surgery' in Haiti during its time of tragedy).
The unforgivable act of a Jerusalem bookshop promoting anti-semitic literature "in the Heart of Jerusalem" carries with it a very important, in fact- earth shaking message about Israel.
Where else in the civilized world (and indeed in the uncivilized world- name your Middle East country), would a bookshop located in the main lobby of a world famous hotel, catering to an international clientele of visiting journalists and influential decision makers have the legal and moral freedom to exhibit and hawk material defamatory of its host country in broad daylight for all the world to see.

ReplyDeleteIn any country surrounding Israel, and indeed in most European countries, if truth were told- which it seldom is, were a bookshop in one of its most famous hotels to dare to hawk material that defamed the government of that country, in all likelihood, the police or secret security forces would move in immediately, confiscate the offending material and arrest the bookshop owner and manager.
Not to mention the hotel owners would be harshly interrogated to illicit what they knew of this heinously provocative act perpetrated against the government.
This is something that could only happen in the State of Israel- G-d Bless that beacon of hope and Democracy in a part of the world drowning in perfidious wrongs and despicable dictatorships.
Countries where it is punishable by death by hanging for one to be accused of being a homosexual, countries where participating in an act of peacefully protesting can get one shot dead in the street- no questions asked.
Countries where the obscene concept of "family honor killings" are considered 'normal' behavior and acceptable and occur on a frequent basis.
And finally countries where it is considered a serious legal crime for a woman to so much as touch her hands to the steering wheel of an automobile.
So yes- Jonathan Spyer is correct to be offended by the odious behavior of a Jerusalem Hotel bookshop to openly promote anti-semitic literature. But may I suggest that Mr. Spyer and all of us also take note, recognize and celebrate the fact that in a democracy as rare in the Middle East and as self confident and as vibrant as the State of Israel, the government has enough confidence both in its own citizens and visitors as well to be able to make their own decisions as to what they might wish to purchase and read- and to decide for themselves what they wish to believe.
Personally, I believe the far bigger story here, and one that should be widely promulgated internationally, the sooner the better, is a front page story that should carry the banner headline:
"In The Heart of Israel, the State of Israel's Democracy, Including Freedom of the Press and Free Speech- Is Alive and Well and On Full Display."
The total failure of the Flotilla organizers to achieve their stated objectives represents a turning point of sorts- however modest (and perhaps not so modest !). The world gradually saw the whole stunt for the utter fiasco it really was whilst simultaneously providing Israel the opportunity to let the entire world learn how many thousands of tons of assistance are pouring into Gaza on a regular basis.
The success of turning the entire Flotilla to Nowhere situation around, a full 180 degrees (literally thanks to the never to be forgotten heroism of the Greek government) means that however slowly, the State of Israel is in fact making progress in the battle for winning the hearts and minds of people around the world in recognizing that Israel is not the problem in the Middle East.
As stated repeatedly by so many observers, more and more people may start to realize that Israel may just be the best friend both America and the world have in the very troubled, turbulent and unpredictable part of the world.
A day will come when all the world, (not just some nations), will celebrate the little nation with a very big Heart in the heart of the Middle East.

ReplyDelete"The Tempest In the Bookshop"
The comment posted by 'Marcus' at "PajamasMedia.com" is fabulous in its in-depth coverage of the little pesky book shop at the American Colony Hotel. The observation by Marcus that the only book the shop carries which refers to the Shoah is Norman Finkelstein's "contribution" to the subject, is revealing. The twisted humor of the situation could not have been more powerfully illustrated than the fact that this sole work was the only item carried by the shop supposedly dealing with the subject of the Holocaust.
That said, I repeat what I stated earlier that it is totally not in Israel's interest to try to shut down this little store on some technicality which will simply be throwing gasoline unto the fire of never ending flaming accusations that Israel is a "police state". Only someone who has never attended a public execution in an Arab country could think to state such a falsehood.
It is far and away much better to leave the shop and its owner alone in order to demonstrate to the entire world, including all the International journalists who congregate at the American Colony Hotel, that unlike Israel's neighbors, Israel is truly an Open Society in the fullest sense of the word, where anyone who wishes to prove he is an anti-semitic bigot has the full freedom to do so in the State of Israel- even annoying little booksellers.
The very worst thing Israel could do in this situation would be to shutter the shop. Israel has nothing to fear from this bookshop staying in business but has very much to lose by closing it down in terms of bad press and looking paranoid.
Might I suggest that there might be a wonderful business opportunity here for someone to open a bookshop next door to the American Colony Hotel, carrying a full collection of books dealing with the subject of the Shoah- including Norman Finkelstein's books- just to show what the mission of an honest bookseller looks like in a true Democracy- that is to say "offering the shopper a range of views" on any given topic.
In any case the next time I am near the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem, I will be sure to follow President Obama's often touted suggested approach and diplomatic policy of entering into an attempt at "engagement" with the bookshop owner and staff. Frankly, I will be most curious (though I very much doubt anything will come of it), to learn their responses as to how they would try to explain away what would appear to be offering a very one-sided assortment of books dealing with recent history.
this post was very intresting to read! thak you so much for posting, i hope you ontinue with the good work.
