The Beginning
In 1984 when the first Yarden and Gamla wines were launched, they were recognized as Israel's first world-class wines. Since then, the Golan Heights Winery has repeatedly won the highest recognition at major international wine exhibitions when competing against fine wines from around the world. The gold medals, awards and certificates that now decorate the winery's hospitality room would satisfy many famous established wineries, let alone one that is only 18 years old. The story began when the Golan Heights was identified as being ideal for the production of premium wine grapes.

The volcanic soil provided excellent drainage, the climate was relatively cool allowing a long growing season, and water was readily available for drip irrigation in the summer. The pioneering moshavs and kibbutzes first planted vines in 1976, and initially the grapes were sold to the large coastal cooperatives. However, local experimental winemaking in 1982 produced results which only underlined the potential and the winery was built the following year

Today, the Golan Heights Winery is a company owned by 4 kibbutzes and 4 moshavs. They manage the vineyards, which rise from near the Sea of Galilee to the foot of the snow-capped Mount Hermon. However, the growers receive detailed guidelines from the winery which maintains strict control of vineyard activity throughout the year. They are assisted by a network of meterological stations in the vineyards yielding climate data. This constant supervision ensures that the maximum potential of quality is realized in each individual vineyard. It is possible to gauge the enormous investment in quality by visiting the winery in the small town of Katzrin high up on the Golan Heights. There you will find the most up-to-date crushing, pressing and pumping equipment and stainless steel tanks thermostatically controlled by computer. Only the finest oak barrels are used for maturation and even the corks, seals and bottles are imported from manufacturers renowned for their high standards.
