Rest, recreation and the EU’s tax-funded hypocrisy

...for all their affiliation with “Palestine”, for all the hard work they invest in maintaining the hard-line extremism that is synonymous with the Palestinian Authority and its coalition partners Hamas, for all their assistance to the EU-sponsored illegal occupation of Jewish lands and the UN-financed indoctrination that passes for education, when the time comes for a little rest and recreation, where do these Western champions of “Palestine” choose to spend their tax-free euros? Not in Gaza City, not in Ramallah, not in Tulkarem.

There is something particularly distasteful about the public anti-Israel stance of the massive, publicly funded organisation that is the EU.

Distasteful?

Yes, because the extremely highly paid EU staffers working in “Palestine”, who like their UN counterparts are paid from public coffers (read: your income tax and mine) are actually paid to undermine the State of Israel.

They do this through underhand, shady collaboration with some of the most extremist terror financiers, indoctrinators, supporters and practitioners known to the Western world.

They engage in this subversion from their bases in what some EU member states refer to as “Palestine”. That would be the country with at least three heads of state (in Jordan, in Gaza and in the Jewish provinces of Judea and Samaria that they want for their own state but are too pig-headed to negotiate over in good faith). Three heads of state who despise each other only marginally more than they hate the Jewish State of Israel.

But you know what?

Even that isn’t the main problem. Because it isn’t illegal to be stupid, it isn’t a criminal act to shut one’s ears to facts and figures, it isn’t illicit to close one’s eyes to acts of terrorism while vilifying measures designed to prevent those acts of terrorism.

Morally repugnant, yes. A sign of ethical stagnation, definitely. Symptomatic of an absurd inability to live up to even the most basic concepts of principled behaviour, sure.

But not illegal.

What can be made illegal, however, is the way these highly paid EU and UN staffers spend their money. That would be the money they earn — tax-free — while working in “Palestine” to subvert the democracy that is Israel. The one and only democracy in the entire Middle East.

Because for all their affiliation with “Palestine”, for all the hard work they invest in maintaining the hard-line extremism that is synonymous with the Palestinian Authority and its coalition partners Hamas, for all their assistance to the EU-sponsored illegal occupation of Jewish lands and the UN-financed indoctrination that passes for education, when the time comes for a little rest and recreation, where do these Western champions of “Palestine” choose to spend their tax-free euros?

Not in Gaza City, not in Ramallah, not in Tulkarem.

No, they come to the vibrant, open, democratic and Western democracy that is Israel. They flock to Israel in their hundreds every evening to enjoy great food, freely flowing wine, a great social scene whether in Jerusalem, Haifa or Tel Aviv, fantastic parties, beautiful beaches, and respect for their individual rights even though they are daily engaged in subverting the very country they choose to visit to enjoy themselves.

So my suggestion would be this: in the same way that entry permits for local Arab workers from the territories are contingent on their returning home to “Palestine” every night, otherwise their permits will be withdrawn, so too should entry permits for UN collaborators be issued conditional on their return to their beloved “Palestine” every single night, where they can enjoy the rich night-life on offer there…

Of course this suggestion will meet hoots of indignation — the UN has been elevated to the status of an international religion, after all, and the EU is a law unto itself.

But stop and think a bit. In Israel we are giving succour to these people — people who in a time of openly declared warfare would be classed as collaborators and either jailed for the interim or shot on sight. At the moment they are engaged in covert warfare against Israel, a kind of low-intensity financial and diplomatic terrorism that is costing the Jewish state dearly in terms of eroding credibility and support.

And all merely because they can, because it is risk-free and comes at no personal cost to them whatsoever to engage in this diplomatic guerrilla warfare.

But how would things change if they actually bore the cost of their actions? Not by being arrested, or shot. But by having their personal freedoms limited to within the political entity they are sworn to serve, “Palestine”. They will continue to be free to spend their workday (but crucially not their free time) antagonising and undermining the political entity where they currently choose to spend all their free time and my income tax, that is to say Israel. Because Israel cannot prevent the UN and EU from doing their work, however distasteful and disgusting that work is. But drinking wine, going to parties, enjoying the beaches, all that is not work. Everywhere in the world, people go home after work.

Professional, highly paid EU and UN subversion specialists should be made to do the same.

I’d say it’s definitely worth a try. If the objection is that such a move would garner Israel a lot of criticism, well hello, stop for a moment and read the press and get back about how positive a press Israel is already receiving even as it aids these diplomatic anarchists.

Anarchists who decry the Jewish state, get paid huge tax-free salaries to subvert the Jewish state — but who demand the right to spend their free time and money where they enjoy themselves the most.

In the Jewish state.

Israel.
