IMRA - Israel accepts and expects Palestinian retaliations

DM BARAK COMMENTS DURING HIS VISIT TO THE IDF GAZA BRIGADE

Dr. Aaron Lerner..
IMRA..
13 March '12..

[Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA: To summarize: Israel accepts that when the IDF kills a terrorist that the Palestinians will respond by trying to kill Israelis. It is an accepted tit-for-tat. Those living in range of the Palestinian response can continue to expect to be fired at. They can only hope that the rocket hurdling towards them is not one of the 10% that Iron Dome doesn't intercept. As for those living too close to Gaza for Iron Dome to function. Well. Tough luck.]

DM BARAK’S COMMENTS DURING HIS VISIT TO THE IDF GAZA BRIGADE
(Communicated by Josh Hantman, International Media Advisor, MOD dover@mod.gov.il )

Defense Minister Ehud Barak made the following remarks this morning (Tuesday), 13.3.12, during his visit to the IDF Gaza Brigade:

On the Escalation in the South
http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Terrorism+Obstacle+to+Peace/Hamas+war+against+Israel/Israel_under_fire-March_2012.htm
:

“It is relatively quiet this morning. It appears that we have reached the end of this round of violence. The IDF demonstrated once again that we will take out anyone who tries to act against us. The rocket situation was handled efficiently and appropriately under the guidance and leadership of the Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz http://www.idf.il/1283-15229-EN/Dover.aspx , GOC Southern Command Maj.-Gen.
Tal Russo and Brig.-Gen. Yossi Bachar – and with the uninterrupted and intense cooperation of the IAF, the Israel Security Agency and the relevant intelligence officers.

We do not and cannot know exactly when we will be required to defend ourselves again. But the IDF remains committed to act against anyone plotting, trying, or preparing terrorist attacks against either our civilian population or any of our soldiers operating along the border.

I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the extraordinary achievements of the Iron Dome system http://www.idf.il/1283-15218-en/Dover.aspx . There were more than 250 rockets and a number of mortar shells that were fired towards Israel [in the past few days]. The high rate of missile interception contributed to the
maintenance of our citizens’ security. The Iron Dome also acted as a deterrent for the other side, whilst allowing the freedom of action, maneuverability and discretion for our own political leadership.

We do not deride the other side’s intentions or capabilities. There may well be further attempts to attack; including the firing of rockets, terrorist attacks, and infiltrations as well as other types of initiatives. The IDF must always be one step ahead. We must remain both prepared and vigilant in order to protect our citizens.

I came here today not only listen to you and hear about your actions, but also to say to those carrying the weight of our security on their shoulders: On behalf of all of us, thank you.

With the Israeli response, I believe the other side realizes once again that we will not accept any attempt to hurt us. We want [such attempts] as far away from us as possible, and we expect them [our enemies] to be very careful with the IDF.

The recommendation to take out Zahir Kaisi http://www.idfblog.com/2012/03/10/popular-resistance-committee/ came from the [Southern] Command, the Chief-of-Staff and the intelligence establishment. It was the right decision. And the order was successfully carried out.

There is no guarantee that when there is an escalation of violence, no one will get hurt. I think we can be proud of the positive results. We will continue to be prepared so that next time, when we are once again forced to act, the action will be decisive, purposeful and accompanied by the required results.”

On the Iron Dome system:

“If everything goes as planned, within two or three weeks we will have a fourth and extra battery. This will enable us to operate in four separate areas. It will strengthen our capabilities to overcome certain technical failures and allow for the potential of a wider deployment if necessary.

We, the Government of Israel and the Ministry of Defense must ensure that we continue to improve the capabilities of the "Iron Dome" in order to provide fast and full security. The Iron Dome system will be used alongside the David's Sling system – the development of which is ongoing – and will be deployed all over the country, not only in the southern region.”
