Uzi Dayan: Israel Needs Sovereignty, Not Security Arrangements

You can't replace a soldier fighting on his own land for his own country, says Maj. General (res.) Uzi Dayan. Discussions of security arrangements cannot take the place of sovereignty and control of territory, says Dayan, who was Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces.

According to Dayan, Israel should discuss borders only after it is satisfied on security, refugees and settlements, since the territory we now control now is Israel's only card to play. Any agreement on a Palestinian state must be implemented in stages over a number of years to see if it works. Israel must clarify what it wants: a Jewish democratic state, united Jerusalem as Israel's capital, zero Palestinian right of return to Israel and defensible borders. Recorded December 26, 2010 at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center.
